A teal velvet chair cushion in a white breakfast corner, season by season

Maggie keeps notes on one white slat-back chair by a garden door, and on how its teal velvet cushion reads from January light to high summer.

The quick answer

A teal velvet dining chair cushion suits a bright breakfast corner all year because the light does the styling: velvet reads lighter on top and darker on the sides, which shows off the box shape. Keep the cushion deep under a tall slatted back so the chair doesn't look top-heavy, and turn it now and then when summer sun comes through the glass.

Notebook: one chair, one door, four seasons

Notes on a chair, kept the way I keep my pattern books.

The dining chair cushion is teal velvet, boxed, with an off-white welt, on a white slat-back chair. The corner is bare on purpose: white wall, oak floorboards, a glazed garden door, and one natural linen napkin hanging over the table edge. Nothing competes with the teal.

Proportion first. The cushion is deep, and it needs to be. A tall slatted back over a thin pad makes a chair look top-heavy; the box brings the seat up to meet the back.

The props are few, and each earns its place. The linen napkin is the only other textile, a soft neutral that says breakfast without adding pattern. The oak floorboards warm all that white. The glimpse of garden through the door is the one other green-blue in the picture, and it ties straight back to the seat.

The welt matches the painted frame, so the color stays contained, a neat teal block set into white. A straight welt on velvet takes patience at the corners, because the pile wants to creep. Here it doesn't.

Then the light, which is the real subject. Morning sun from the garden door makes the top of the velvet read lighter than the sides. That shift is what sells the box shape, and it will not look the same in January as in July. Which month is your breakfast corner at its best?

Pinned by Maggie: teal, welt and garden

Five pins jump from the teal velvet top to the garden view, marking how little this corner needs.

A real project

170 inches, in three pieces

From my notebook, a job that had nothing to do with chairs and everything to do with honest limits. An architect in the US specified a tufted velvet floor cushion for a boy's playroom: 38 x 170 in (97 x 432 cm), 8 in (20 cm) thick.

The shop could not make 170 in as a single piece. It proposed three sections, two at the very minimum, butting together along the wall, and quoted delivery to the US.

Right, then. Velvet has limits, and a good workshop says so up front. The same honesty works on a small chair pad: tell the workshop the real seat, curves and all, and the cushion will fit. Our dining chair pad measuring Pattern walks through it.

Buyer questions: barrel backs, ottomans, sets of eight

  1. A common question

Can you make a cushion for a vintage barrel-back rattan chair with a rounded back?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, semicircular back and all. Send the width and depth, such as 17 x 18 in (43 x 46 cm), and a clear photo taken from directly above that shows the whole seat. A simple tracing or template of the seat is better still for getting the curve right.

  2. A common question

Could I order just the ottoman for my floor sofa, and how big is it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm) and is made in the color you choose, for example brick to match a sofa you already have. It doesn't need metal bars.

  3. A common question

Is there a better price if I order several chair cushions at once?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. On a set of eight 17 x 18 in velvet seat cushions the workshop lowered the total, and a set of four corduroy lounge chairs with ottomans came down as well. Ask for a quote on the full quantity.

Under a tall slatted chair back, a thin pad looks lost. A deep teal velvet box cushion brings the seat up and keeps the chair from looking top-heavy.

Questions buyers ask next

Why does a teal velvet cushion look like two colors on the same seat?

Velvet pile catches light differently depending on the angle. Light falling on the top makes it read lighter, while the sides stay darker. On a box cushion that contrast is useful, because it outlines the shape.

Is velvet a comfortable dining seat through a hot summer?

Velvet's soft pile feels warmer to the touch than a flat weave, which is welcome in winter. If your breakfast corner gets very hot in summer, a flat weave such as a linen-look sits cooler against bare legs.

Does a cushion on a white slat-back chair need ties?

Not always. A deep box cushion on a flat seat may stay put, but ties or a non-slip base help if it slides. Both can be added at checkout or afterward through a separate payment link.

How do I keep sun from wearing one side of a velvet chair pad?

Turn and rotate the cushion every few weeks in the bright months, so one face and edge don't take all the sun. If the corner faces the sun directly, draw the blind or curtain during the strongest hours.
