A letter from Harlan to anyone with a date circled on the calendar, about a gray corner pad, a picture book, and the order that got it there on time.

Set up for story time, the slate gray corner pad holds an open book, a stacking toy and a teddy within reach.

The quick answer

To order a corner floor cushion right the first time, name the fabric range and the color number together, give the size in inches per piece, and state the date you need it. One designer with an install just before the December holidays was promised delivery within 15 days of ordering, so ask early and leave a margin before any install.

High Point ·

My friend,

A letter on ordering a corduroy floor cushion by a deadline

You have a room to finish and a date circled in red. Let me show you a corner that was ordered well, and then tell you how to order yours.

It is a story corner. A slate gray corduroy corner floor cushion, box edge, no piping, with a rounded front wall so there is no sharp corner at the walkway. The top is flat and deep, sized for lying down with a book rather than sitting upright. On it sit an open picture book, wooden stacking toys and a teddy on a folded muslin, all within reach.

Slate cord hides the traffic of little feet. Above it, a cream canopy with fairy lights, a cream star pillow and a cream square pillow keep the corner bright. A mint cloud pillow is the one cool accent, and mint sits easy beside gray. Framed bear and moon prints set the story, and a patterned cream rug softens the floor. Daylight comes in from the window at the side, which makes this a daytime reading spot.

Size it by a child lying on the diagonal, not by seat width. The quarter-circle size Pattern has the numbers, and the corner floor cushions hub shows the shapes.

A real project

Fifteen days before the holidays

An interior designer in the US was planning a new bedroom for a client's daughter, to be installed just before the December holidays, and wrote to ask whether a corner floor cushion could be rushed. The workshop committed to delivery within 15 days of ordering.

Fifteen days is a promise, and promises are easiest to keep for people who ask early. I tell designers the same thing every season: order custom cushions well before the install date, with room for a swatch check, and put the size, the fabric range and the color number in the first message. Buy the cushion once, cry once.

The quote checklist and swatches before ordering Patterns help, and there are more rooms like this in corner reading nook floor cushions and the reading nook collection.

How to write the order so nobody has to write back

  1. Name the fabric range and the color number together. In linen, 19 is a near-white cream; in velvet, 19 is a blue.
  2. Give the size in inches, per piece, with the count: two at 48 x 36 in (122 x 91 cm) is a different order from one.
  3. Ask for a swatch if the color has to sit beside something already in the room.
  4. Settle the hardware in writing. Floor sofa support bars come in chrome or silver only, whatever a photo suggests.
  5. State the date the cushion must arrive in your first message, and leave a margin before it.

Buyer questions: the whitest linen, bar finishes and floor cushion quotes

  1. A common question

Which color number in the linen range is white, or the closest to it?

    The workshop's answer

There is no pure white linen. Color 19 is a cream very close to white and matches the lightest cushion in the photos. Numbers are used in the velvet range too, where 14 is brick or burnt orange, 19 is a blue, 11 a dusty pink and 34 a khaki green.

  2. A common question

What color are the metal support bars? Can I get them in gold or brass?

    The workshop's answer

All the bars are chrome or silver. Photos where the bars seemed to match the cover color, or looked brass, were misleading, and gold is not available.

  3. A common question

What do you need to quote custom linen floor cushions, say two at 48 x 36 inches, or one at 24 x 24?

    The workshop's answer

The size and the count. Two 48 x 36 in (122 x 91 cm) linen floor cushions were quoted and could arrive by the requested date if bought right away, and a 24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm) linen floor cushion is priced per piece.

Color 19 is cream in one fabric range and blue in another, so a corner floor cushion order names the range and the number, never the number alone.

Questions buyers ask next

Does the same color number mean the same shade in linen and velvet?

No. Numbers are reused across ranges: linen 19 is a cream close to white, while velvet 19 is a blue. Always write the fabric range beside the number, and ask for a swatch if the shade has to match something.

How far ahead should a designer order a custom floor cushion for an install?

Early enough for a swatch check and a margin. For one child's bedroom finished just before the December holidays, the workshop committed to delivery within 15 days of ordering; give your install date in the first message and ask what fits.

Why give a corner floor cushion a rounded front?

A curved front wall removes the sharp corner that would otherwise point into the walkway. In a child's story nook that means fewer stubbed toes and an easier path past the cushion, while the flat top stays deep enough to lie on.
