The Cutting Table · a common question
How do you measure for a corner floor cushion?
Also asked as:How are you measuring the corner cushion? It says 32 by 32, but it's a triangle.
Two walls, one corner, two numbers. Everything else about a corner cushion follows from those.
The quick answer
A corner floor cushion is measured by its two straight sides, the ones that sit against the walls and meet at the 90-degree corner. Measure along each wall from the back corner to where the cushion should end, so 48 x 48 in means 48 in (122 cm) on each wall. Don't measure diagonally, and skip the curved front edge.
SaveKey facts
- Corner cushion size is the two straight sides along the walls.
- Measure along each wall from the back corner to where the cushion should end.
- Don't measure diagonally from the back corner to the front.
- The curved edge doesn't need measuring; on a 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) quarter circle it runs about 75.4 in (191.5 cm).
- The pictured corner set is 48 x 48 in; the default corner floor cushion is 34 x 34 in (86 x 86 cm).
- On a triangle corner cushion, 32 x 32 in (81 x 81 cm) means the two sides forming the right angle.
- Three-sided corners need a photo and the depth measured in the middle, and are quoted separately.

Measuring a two-wall corner
Start in the back corner
Hook the tape where the two walls meet. That point is zero for both sides.
Run along the first wall
Stop where you want the cushion to end. Write the number down.
Run along the second wall
Same start, same corner. 39 x 39 in means 39 in (99 cm) on each wall, an L on the floor.
Leave the front edge alone
No diagonal, no curve. The shape follows from the two wall sides.
Why the curve takes care of itself
Sailmakers learn this early: fix the two edges you can reach and the free edge follows. A quarter-circle corner floor cushion works the same way. Each wall side is the radius, so a 48 x 48 in cushion has a curved edge of about 75.4 in (191.5 cm) without you ever bending a tape around it.
Triangles follow the same rule. On a 32 x 32 in triangle, those are the two sides forming the right angle; the long diagonal front edge isn't one of the listed numbers. See diagonal measurement if the word keeps tripping you up.
The set in the photos is 48 x 48 in. The default is 34 x 34 in. Which corner are you filling, friend? The quarter-circle sizing Pattern has the full table.
Three corner shapes, one rule
| Shape | What the size means | What you skip |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter circle, 48 x 48 in | Each wall side is 48 in (122 cm) | The curved edge, about 75.4 in (191.5 cm) |
| Right triangle, 32 x 32 in | The two sides forming the right angle | The long diagonal front edge |
| Three-sided corner, such as a corner window | Each side, plus the depth taken exactly in the middle | Nothing: send a photo with the numbers written on it |
Corner floor cushion size means the two wall sides: 48 x 48 in is 48 in along each wall, and the curved edge takes care of itself.

Buyer questions
- A common question
Do I measure the corner floor cushion from wall to wall?
The workshop's answerYes. Measure from the back corner along each wall to where the cushion should end. 39 x 39 in means each wall side is 39 in long, forming an L. Don't measure diagonally from the back corner to the front.
- A common question
The triangle corner cushion says 32 x 32 in. Which sides are those?
The workshop's answerThe two straight sides that meet at the right angle, the base and the height. The long diagonal front edge isn't one of the listed numbers, and the shop can send a drawing if the shape is unclear.
- A common question
How long is the curved edge on the quarter-circle cushion?
The workshop's answerThe size is the two straight sides against the walls, for example 48 x 48 in, and on that size the curved outer edge is about 75.4 in. For an unusual space, send a photo and draw the sizes on paper.
- A common question
What size is the corner set in the photos?
The workshop's answerThe large corner set pictured is 48 x 48 in; the default corner floor cushion is 34 x 34 in. Measure the length of each wall the cushion will sit against.
- A common question
How close to my size will a handmade cushion come out?
The workshop's answerHandmade cushions can vary by about 1 in (2-3 cm) from the ordered size. If a dimension is a hard maximum, say so and the cushion is kept under that limit.
Questions buyers ask next
What if my corner has three sides, like a corner window?
Send a photo with the measurements marked on it, including the depth taken exactly in the middle. A three-sided corner is cut to the shape of your space, needs special cutting and is quoted separately from the standard sizes.
Will the workshop confirm the shape before cutting?
Yes. When a shape is unclear, the shop offers a drawing or diagram of your dimensions, and the cushion is made to the approved layout. It builds to your numbers rather than choosing the final size for you.
Is a listed corner size the cushion or the space around it?
The cushion itself. Listed sizes describe the finished cushion, not the corner it sits in, so measure along each wall only as far as you want the cushion to reach, not the full length of the wall.
Why is my corner cushion not sitting flush against the walls?
Usually the baseboards. A cushion measured along the floor meets the baseboard molding before the wall, so it sits out by the molding's depth, and a corner that isn't square opens a gap at one end. Measure along both walls from the back corner, note the baseboard depth, and check the corner angle with a full-size paper outline before ordering.
