A Reading by NateL-Shaped Corner Bench Cushions

Royal blue velvet on an L-shaped window bench, and the white line that draws it

Partner, this bench has an L, a step around the wall, a backrest and a white line around all of it. A child's eye follows that line, so it had better be true.

  • taupe#918c8529%

  • dusty dark ink blue#38405518%
  • linen#d7d6d113%
  • oatmeal#bab6ae12%

The quick answer

An L-shaped bench cushion is usually made as two pieces: one runs into the corner and the other is shortened by the first one's seat depth. In this kids' room the seat also steps around a wall pier, cut from a measured sketch, and off-white piping on royal blue velvet outlines every edge without changing the ordered size.

The color story, edge first

Named by eye from the photograph; the strip above is measured from it.

  • Royal blue velvet#34467eThe body. Deep enough to hide small marks.
  • Off-white welt#e6e3daDraws the outline and matches the bench paint.
  • Bench white#d7d6d1The painted base, framing the blue from below.
  • Rug gray#918c85The largest measured patch; it calms the blue.
  • Pine floor#b8996eWarm wood under a cool blue.

Blue for the body, white for the edges

The bench is built in, painted white, and turns a corner by the sash window. The seat is cut in an L so it steps around the wall pier and uses the whole bench top. A separate backrest sits on the wall side, and a front-facing book display waits at arm's reach.

Royal blue velvet is bright enough for a child's room and deep enough to hide small marks. The pile is directional, so the blue goes lighter and darker as daylight crosses the seat. The off-white piping does the drafting: it traces the box edge like a pencil line and repeats the white of the base, so cushion and carpentry read as one piece.

Every edge on a bench like this is a choice: - Box edge with piping, as here: square side bands, a welt on the top and bottom seams. - A notch around a pier or post: cut from a measured sketch and wide photos. - Angled corners and rounded ends: ordered on the custom-shape listing, from a drawing. - No piping: a plain box edge, at the same cost.

Tolerance is kindness to your future self, so measure the notch twice. What does your bench do at its corner? The L-shaped corner joint guide shows how two pieces meet, and L-shaped cushions gathers the layouts.

The seat steps round the wall pier so the whole bench top is used.

  3. Off-white piping

Outlines the shape like a drawing and matches the white base.

  4. Book display

Front-facing books at arm's reach turn the bench into a reading corner.

  5. Sash window

Daylight falls straight onto the seat for reading.

Foam, notches and centimeters

  1. A common question

Is there foam inside your cushions, and what density is it?

    The workshop's answer

Tufted cushions are filled with silicone-ball fiber, not foam, though foam can be requested. On that line, plain crease-free seat pads use a 28-density seating foam, with a lower-cost 22-density option.

  2. A common question

Can you cut a window-sill cushion around a pillar notch and an indent?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a hand-drawn sketch with every measurement and a few wide-angle photos of the sill. The workshop quotes from those and sends a private payment link once you pick the fabric and piping codes.

  3. A common question

My bench measurements are in centimeters. Can you make the cushion to those exact numbers?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, to the exact depth, length and thickness given, for example 27 1/2 in deep, 74 3/4 in long and 3 1/8 in thick (70 x 190 x 8 cm). Say clearly whether your figures are centimeters or inches, because that changes the quote.

A real project

A green that had to be a listed green

A buyer wanted a closed-corner L floor sofa in green, to match a moss green seen elsewhere. They ordered swatches and received water green, off-white and beige. The workshop explained that the sofa is made only in its listed colors, and water green was the only green.

The swatch matched the listing. The buyer checked the sizes and ordered.

Sizes
Single 39 x 79 in; closed corner 79 x 118 in
Fabric
Water green corduroy

The lesson: Order swatches to confirm a color; don't expect a custom match to another brand's shade.

Piping sits on the seam line: an off-white welt on a royal blue bench cushion changes the outline people see, not the size ordered.

Questions buyers ask next

Is an L-shaped window bench cushion one piece or two?

Usually two. One runs into the corner and the other is shortened by the first one's depth, so they butt together without overlapping. A single L piece is possible but not recommended; two pieces fit better and ship more safely.

Where do angled corners and rounded ends get ordered?

On the custom-shape listing. Pick the size range by the longest length and deepest depth, then upload a drawing with every edge measured plus a photo of the space. Production follows the drawing.

How tall should the backrest be on a kids' window bench?

Standard backrests are about 16 in (40 cm) tall and 4 in (10 cm) thick, measured from the top of the seat cushion. The workshop recommends 16 in over 12 in for support.
