What is inside a corner floor cushion, and why this one sits firm

A floor seat has nothing under it but the floor, so the foam does the work a chair frame usually does. This olive stripe corner does it well.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion needs firm foam, because nothing sits beneath it but the floor. Seat cushions here use about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, and floor seats run about 6 in (15 cm) thick, with 8 in and more on request. Backrest pillows are usually filled with shredded foam, so they give when you lean.

High Point ·

My friend,

What the floor asks of a cushion

Here is the plain truth of floor seating: a chair forgives a soft cushion, and the floor does not. Reviewers keep writing the same line when it is done right: thick enough that you don't feel the floor.

That is why the seat in this corner is firm. The workshop's seat foam is about 2.0 lb per cubic foot (32 kg/m³), high-resilience, the kind you sit on rather than in. A softer 1.75 lb (28 kg/m³) grade exists on request; it suits a sofa better than a floor.

Thickness and density are two different numbers. Thickness changes how high you sit; density changes how it feels. On the floor, a thin cushion needs firmer foam than a thick one to feel as supportive, so settle the thickness first and keep the foam firm. Buy the cushion once, cry once.

Five pins in a green corner

Five pins, from the fern prints to the rug, none of them there by accident.

  1. Fern print gallery

Green botanical prints in oak frames echo the olive stripe on the wall.

  2. Olive awning stripe

Olive on sage is a tone-on-tone pairing that feels calm and deliberate.

  3. Dried hydrangea vase

Dried flowers add a faded, papery note that matches the vintage prints.

  4. Oak side table

A small table by the window holds books at arm's reach.

  5. Woven jute-look rug

A woven rug adds grain under a smooth, bright stripe.

Reading the corner, from the prints to the rug

The whole corner lives in one family of greens: sage walls, an olive awning stripe, fern prints in oak frames. A bold stripe gets away with it because it takes its darkest green from the wall art. Self piping keeps the box edge crisp without adding a new color.

The prints hang low and to the left, over the seat instead of near the ceiling, so art and cushion read as one nook. The two flanged backrest pillows are softer than the seat on purpose: your back wants give where your seat wants support. A round oak side table keeps books at arm's reach, dried hydrangea adds a papery note to match the old prints, and a woven rug puts grain under the smooth stripe.

A real project

Three pink quarter-rounds, 50 inches a side

A buyer in the US wrote about a girls' play and reading corner. She wanted three large quarter-round floor cushions in pinks, one with a ruffle. The workshop cannot make ruffles and said so, then offered a double layer in two contrasting fabrics.

She settled on three plain cushions, 50 in (127 cm) along each straight side, in soft fabric over 6 1/2 in (16.5 cm) foam, at a reduced price. Then she came back and ordered a fourth, in fuchsia. A second order is the kind of review a workshop keeps.

The lesson: When a ruffle isn't possible, a double layer in contrasting colors is the honest alternative.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can I buy the metal support bars for the floor sofa on their own?

    The workshop's answer

Usually, yes. They come as a set of four, one for each side of the sofa, through a custom purchase link. Once, for a single teddy sofa, the workshop declined to sell the bars alone.

  2. A common question

Is every part of the floor sofa washable, armrests included?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cover zips off and can be washed, armrests too. First remove the white non-slip fabric from the bottom; it must never go in the machine, so wipe it clean instead, even with pets.

  3. A common question

Only part of my floor sofa arrived, just the metal bars. Where is the rest?

    The workshop's answer

The teddy sofa ships as three parcels, the frame bars and two cushion packs, under one tracking number, and they can arrive on different days. If the carrier can't find one, the workshop sends a replacement.

A floor cushion has nothing under it but the floor, so the foam does the work of a chair frame. Firm foam about 6 in thick is where a good floor seat starts.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a corner floor cushion be?

Tufted floor cushions run about 4 to 5 in (10 to 12.5 cm) and floor seats about 6 in (15 cm), with 8 in and more on request. Two stacked layers give a higher seat for less.

What is the largest standard quarter-round corner cushion?

The standard maximum is 48 in (122 cm) along each straight side, which gives a curved front of about 75.4 in (192 cm). Larger ones, like the 50 in cushions above, are made to order.

Is memory foam a better choice for sitting on the floor?

Not usually. Memory foam needs 3 in or more and stiffens in a cold room; high-density polyurethane keeps a crisp shape, which is why it is the workshop's seat standard.

Sit well. — Harlan
