A Reading by HarlanCorner Floor Cushions & Poufs

A royal blue gingham corner floor cushion, and the edges that shape a sage reading nook

Harlan answers three letters about linen, steel bars and measuring, then reads a quarter-round seat whose curved box front, self piping and flanged pillows each do a different job.

A quarter-round floor seat in small-scale blue check tucks into a sage corner, with pressed-flower prints and a jug of sunflowers doing the styling.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion holds its shape best with a box edge and a curved front, measured along each wall rather than corner to corner. This quarter-round seat in small royal blue gingham has self piping on the curve and two flanged backrest pillows. The default corner floor cushion is 34 x 34 in; a larger corner set is 48 x 48 in.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Is your linen pure linen or a blend, and which linen comes closest to a velvet color I already have?

    The workshop's answer

The linen range is 100% natural linen. Linen natural35 is the closest match to velvet 38, and lila918 is the closest to velvet 21.

  2. A common question

How thick are the metal support bars? I'd like floor protectors on hand before the sofa arrives.

    The workshop's answer

The support bars are steel, 5/8 in (1.6 cm) in diameter. Buy rubber protectors in that size ahead of delivery and your floors are covered from the first day.

  3. A common question

How do I measure for a corner floor cushion? Corner to corner?

    The workshop's answer

No: measure the length of each wall the cushion will sit against. The default corner floor cushion is 34 x 34 in (86 x 86 cm); the large corner set in the listing photos is 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm).

Now, the reading

Reading the edges, front to back

Every edge on a cushion is a decision, my friend, and this corner made four good ones.

The seat is a quarter round with a box edge. That straight side wall is what lets a floor cushion stand like a low chair instead of lying there like a dropped pillow. It is built deep and low, about half the height of the backrest pillows, so the corner reads as a seat.

The front is curved, and that is where the fabric earns its keep. Small-scale gingham bends around a radius without looking pulled out of true. A big check would bow and wander along that curve; a small one just follows it.

The piping is cut from the same gingham. Self piping marks the curve crisply and adds no new color, so royal blue stays the only strong note in a room of sage, cream and seagrass.

The two backrest pillows are flanged: a flat border of fabric stitched around the edge. The flange frames the check so each one reads as a deliberate square against the wall. Box the seat, flange the backs, and the edges tell you which piece you sit on and which you lean on.

Then the props. The pleated linen lamp on a brass stem gives evening light at shoulder height. The pressed-botanical prints repeat the sage walls. The sunflowers in a white enamel jug are yellow, the complement of royal blue, used once and kept low. A seagrass basket and a cream rug keep the floor soft and plain.

More quarter-rounds live in corner floor cushions, checks in checked linen and gingham, and the sizing math in corner floor cushion sizes. For edges in general, see box edge vs knife edge.

  1. Flanged backrest pillow

The flat flange frames the check so each pillow reads as a deliberate square, not a slouchy cushion.

  2. Self-piped seat edge

Piping cut from the same gingham keeps the curved front crisp without adding another color.

  3. Pleated table lamp

A warm pleated shade at shoulder height gives the corner its evening reading light.

  4. Botanical print wall

Green-and-cream prints pick up the sage walls so the blue check is the only strong color.

  5. Sunflower jug

Yellow is the complementary pop to royal blue, used once and kept low to the floor.

A real project

A whole room of emerald, and one long seat

A family in the US had bought one emerald set from the workshop and came back wanting the whole room covered, a corner of 159 x 108 in (404 x 274 cm). They asked for a 39 x 94 in (99 x 239 cm) cushion with two wall cushions, and a 116 x 36 in (295 x 91 cm) cushion with its own wall cushion.

Their old piece was 5 in (13 cm) thick, and they wanted it firmer and taller, so the workshop went to 6 in (15 cm). The workshop offered to split the 116 in run into two 58 in (147 cm) pieces, since two are easier to handle and ship. The family chose one piece, and that was their call to make. They settled on velvet 34, emerald, after holding it against 36, a darker green.

Long seats can be one piece. Two pieces are kinder to your back on delivery day.

Questions buyers ask next

What is the difference between a flanged pillow and a piped one?

A flanged pillow has a flat fabric border stitched around its edge, which frames the fabric like a mat around a print. A piped pillow has a corded welt in the seam instead. Here the flange makes each gingham backrest read as a neat square.

Does gingham work on a curved cushion?

Small-scale gingham does. The little check follows a curved front without looking distorted, while a large check can bow visibly along the radius. Self piping in the same check keeps the curve crisp.

Why is a floor seat built deep and low?

Depth and a box edge make a floor cushion sit like a chair rather than a stray pillow. Here the seat is about half the height of the backrest pillows, which gives the corner a clear seat and a clear back.

What colors go with royal blue gingham in a room?

Keep the rest quiet, sage, cream and natural fiber as here, then add the complement once. Yellow sunflowers in a white jug do that job low on the floor, so the blue still leads.
