A navy pinstripe window seat cushion, and the four mistakes it quietly avoids
White paint, white frames, green leaves and one hairline of navy. My friends, this is a lesson in how little color a sunroom needs, and how easily it goes wrong.

The quick answer
On a white window seat, choose a cushion with a fine stripe rather than plain ivory: a navy pinstripe on ivory reads as texture from across the room yet gives the box edge a clear line. Keep the pillows plain, let the plants carry the green, and order swatches before any dark fabric, since deep shades shift most between screen and room.
Four mistakes this garden room did not make
A plain ivory cushion on a white bench disappears. That is the first mistake, and this photograph refuses it.
Look at the window seat cushion closely: ivory cotton with a navy pinstripe so fine it reads almost solid from the doorway. Step nearer and the stripe appears along the box edge, drawing the outline that white paint and white window frames would otherwise swallow. The self piping stays in the same stripe, so the edge is defined without a second color competing. The cushion runs the full length of the bench, end to end, no gaps.
The mistakes it avoids, in the order I meet them:
- Plain ivory on white paint. The seat vanishes, and every everyday mark shows. A barely-there stripe keeps the bench crisp.
- Pattern on pattern. The three pillows are plain ivory linen, piped in their own cloth. One stripe on the seat is enough; the pillows listen.
- Pillows that block the glass. Two layered pillows lean against the window and make a backrest without stealing the daylight.
- A seat used as a shelf. The jute basket on the floor holds throws and books, so the cushion stays clear to sit on.
The green comes from the maidenhair fern and the trailing pothos, never from the fabric. The seagrass planter on the sill repeats the jute basket below, so the eye travels from window to floor. How white is the paint around your own window seat?
If you choose a bolder stripe, decide its direction before you order; stripe direction on cushions shows both ways. More seats like this sit in window seat cushions and sunroom cushions, and the cloth family is striped cotton and ticking.
The garden-room palette, strand by strand
- Ivory cotton#F3EEE2The ground. Warm enough not to look clinical against white trim.
- Pencil navy#1F2A44The hairline. Texture from the doorway, a stripe at arm's length.
- Maidenhair green#6E8B4EBorrowed from the fern, never from the fabric.
- Terracotta pot#B8653EThe one warm note, kept low on the sill.
- Seagrass#C2A878Sill planter and floor basket: the same fiber twice.
- Oak floorboard#B08A5CGrounds the white bench so it does not float.
Pinned by Élodie: five places to look
Five pins, from the pencil stripe on the boxing to the jute basket that keeps the seat clear.

- Pencil stripe boxing
Fine navy pinstripes on ivory read almost solid from across the room and only show up close.
- Ivory linen pillow
A plain linen at the open end keeps the stripe the only pattern on the seat.
- Piped linen pair
Two layered pillows against the glass give a backrest without blocking the light.
- Seagrass planter
Natural fiber on the sill repeats the jute basket below, linking the window to the floor.
- Jute floor basket
A basket beside the bench holds throws and books, so the cushion stays clear to sit on.

The fabric that looked too dark on arrival
A buyer got in touch after ordering 3 in (7.6 cm) seat cushions for a banquette with a pillow rail: two seats, 67.5 x 17.5 in (171.5 x 44.5 cm) and 42.5 x 17.5 in (108 x 44.5 cm). Then came two long backrest pillows to hang from the rail, 65 x 8 x 2 in (165 x 20 x 5 cm) and 56 x 8 x 2 in (142 x 20 x 5 cm), with single piping. The workshop explained the filling: shredded foam made in-house, in a separate insert, inside a zippered, washable cover.
When everything arrived, the fabric was darker than the buyer had pictured. The workshop offered new covers only, close to cost. This time the buyer ordered samples first, chose a softer fabric with matching piping, added non-slip bases, and replaced all four covers over the same inserts.
Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Deep greens and dark shades shift the most between a monitor and a room, so lay the swatches on the actual bench at noon and again at dusk. The routine is in fabric swatches before ordering.
Buyer questions: a corner bench, pale neutrals and one torn backrest
- A common question
My corner kitchen bench is an L. Can you make it as one L-shaped cushion?
The workshop's answerUsually the workshop makes an L as separate cushions that meet at the corner, because they fit more cleanly and travel more safely. A common layout is a square corner cushion with a long cushion on each arm, such as 20.75 x 65 1/8 in (52.7 x 165.4 cm), 20.75 x 20.75 in (52.7 x 52.7 cm) and 20.75 x 65 in (52.7 x 165 cm). For a small L, one piece can be considered: your sketch becomes a lettered template, and you confirm every edge and the thickness.
- A common question
The swatch pictures are tiny. Could you send bigger photos of the oatmeal, flax and greige linens?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop sends close-up phone photos of any fabric code on request. In one comparison, two of the linens looked grayer and two looked lighter and warmer. Phone photos shift with the light, so some buyers ask for the fabric to be photographed next to a sheet of white paper.
- A common question
My dog ripped one backrest cushion. Can I buy just that piece, or add another one to my sofa?
The workshop's answerYes for backrests: single backrest cushions with filling are made, straight or L-shaped, in any color from the range, and the workshop sends a private purchase link. A single armrest on its own is not sold.

On a white bench, a plain ivory window seat cushion disappears; a navy pinstripe fine enough to read as texture gives the box edge a line.

Questions buyers ask next
Why choose a pinstripe over plain ivory for a white window seat?
A plain ivory cushion blends into white paint and shows everyday marks. A fine navy pinstripe reads almost solid from across the room, but it outlines the box edge and keeps the bench crisp without adding a loud pattern to a bright sunroom.
Should throw pillows match a striped window seat cushion?
Let the stripe be the only pattern. Plain linen pillows in the ground color, piped in their own cloth, add softness without competing. If you want more color, bring it in through plants and pots rather than a second print.
Where should pillows go on a long window seat?
Group them. Here two layered pillows lean against the glass as a backrest and one sits at the open end, leaving most of the seat free. A basket on the floor holds throws and books so the cushion never becomes a shelf.
What is the simplest fix if a cushion color disappoints?
New covers over the same inserts. One buyer whose fabric looked too dark ordered samples, chose a softer fabric with matching piping and non-slip bases, and replaced four covers while keeping the shredded-foam inserts.
