A Blue Pinstripe Window Seat Cushion, Finished by Hand, in a Sunroom
A fine blue stripe, a firm block over open cubbies, and the small hand-finished details you only notice when somebody skips them.
SaveThe quick answer
A window seat cushion over open cubbies needs a firm, high-density foam block so the seat stays flat across the gaps instead of dipping into them. This one is a fine blue-and-white pinstripe cotton with self piping and a box edge, cut to stop flush with the front of the bench. From a few steps back the stripe reads as a soft blue-gray.
Three questions from the porch step, before the reading
- A common question
If I take the zippered cover off, is there an inner cover holding the filling in?
The workshop's answerThe workshop can make an inner cover if you need one. With foam filling it isn't necessary, so the workshop adds its own protective layer around the foam instead.
- A common question
My window seat is three irregular trapezoids with no parallel sides. Can I mail you a paper template?
The workshop's answerRather than mailing it, send clear photos or a digital file of the template in the chat, or attach the files when you place the order.
- A common question
Can you make back cushions and armrests for an IKEA sofa bed?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop makes a set of two backrests and two armrests with a mattress cover that turns the sofa bed into a lounge, for example in soft fabric 925, and sends a picture of the proposed set for approval first.

What the hands did on this sunroom seat
Here's what I look at first, neighbor, and it isn't the stripe. It's the bench. A white built-in with open cubbies, a seagrass belly basket tucked into one of them. Open cubbies mean the cushion has nothing under it but the dividers. A soft fill would sag into every gap. This window seat cushion is a firm, high-density foam block, and it stays flat from one end to the other.
Then the stripe. It's a whisper-fine blue-and-white pinstripe from our striped cotton and ticking family. Up close you can count the lines. From a few steps back they melt into a soft blue-gray haze, which is why three ivory linen pillows and a cream fringed throw can pile up on it without a quarrel.
The finishing is where the hands show. Self piping cut from the same stripe, so the edge stays quiet. A box edge with a straight front. And the cushion stops flush with the front of the bench: no overhang, no gap. That takes measuring the top including any lip, then trusting the number.
The props do honest work too. A trailing plant in a white pot on the sill and a leafy one in a woven basket pot bring the only green, repeating the garden beyond the multi-pane windows. The seagrass basket below echoes the linen above and swallows the everyday clutter. The fringed throw drops over the far end and softens the square corner. In bright, green-filtered daylight, a sunroom wants exactly that: natural fibers, plants, and a seat that stays put. What's under your window seat: drawers, a lid or open cubbies?
Five pins in a green-lit sunroom
Five pins, from the box edge over the cubbies to the fringed throw, marking the details worth copying.

- ivory linen pillows
Linen pillows pile up freely because the pinstripe is too fine to clash with anything.
- houseplant on the sill
The plants bring the only green and repeat the garden outside the glass.
- seagrass basket
Natural fiber below the seat echoes the linen above it and hides everyday clutter.
- blue pinstripe box edge
A firm foam block keeps the seat flat across the open cubbies instead of dipping into them.
- fringed cream throw
The throw drops over the far end and softens the square corner of the bench.

A corner bench, one extra cushion and piping from the lighter thread
A buyer sent the workshop a photo of a corner kitchen bench, measured in millimeters, and wanted two seat cushions plus a back cushion on the shorter side, all in a patterned fabric, P66. The workshop suggested a tidy shortcut: order two of the short size and write a note that one of them is the back cushion.
Then it sent clearer fabric images, so the buyer could choose piping that matched the lighter tone inside the pattern. They picked P67.
That piping choice is the old craft in a nutshell. Pull the cord color out of the pattern itself, and the edge frames the fabric instead of arguing with it. And when a back cushion matches a seat size, order two and label one; it saves everybody a drawing. If your bench is an odd shape, the paper template Pattern shows how to photograph one instead of mailing it.
Piping, foam and fit details to ask about on a window seat
- Piping in the pattern's lighter tone, or self piping cut from the same stripe
- A protective layer around the foam, with an inner cover only if you want one
- Firm high-density foam whenever the seat spans open cubbies
- A cushion cut to stop flush with the bench front, lip or overhang included in the measurement
- One matching size ordered twice, with a note saying which piece is the back
- Templates sent as photos or a digital file, not by mail
- Standard 32-density foam (about 2.0 lb/ft³) at 4 in (10 cm) thick, or 2, 3 or 5 in on request
- Stripes that run front to back by default, because the fabric roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide

Questions buyers ask next
Will a fine pinstripe look busy with patterned pillows?
A very fine pinstripe reads almost solid from across the room, so it takes pillows and throws easily. Here three ivory linen pillows and a fringed cream throw sit on it without clashing; a bolder stripe would want calmer company.
How firm should a window seat cushion be over open storage?
Firm enough to stay flat across the dividers. A high-density foam block spans open cubbies without dipping, while a soft fill sinks into each gap and leaves the seat feeling uneven.
What does self piping mean on a striped cushion?
The piping cord is covered in the same fabric as the cushion. On a stripe it gives a quiet edge that doesn't interrupt the pattern; a solid in the pattern's lighter tone is the other tidy option.
