A Reading by CallumBench Cushions
One stripe, one plain, the rest texture: a mustard bench cushion at the island
Three kinds of cloth share one warm kitchen corner, and only one of them is striped. That restraint is why the plain mustard seat can stand up to a busy floor.
SaveThe quick answer
To mix patterns around a dining bench cushion, give each layer one job: a plain cushion on the seat, one stripe lower down on a rug or runner, and texture in the pillows. Here a plain mustard box cushion sits between an oak bench and terracotta tiles, a striped jute runner carries the pattern, and slub linen pillows add texture without a second print.
Buyer questions
- A common question
My bench has angled ends, so it's really a trapezoid. Can you match that shape with a backrest, or is a plain rectangle cheaper?
The workshop's answerBoth can be made. Angled benches are handled as trapezoids and need every side measured. For one 15 3/4 x 70 7/8 in (40 x 180 cm) bench, the exact trapezoid with backrests came to roughly twice the price of a rectangle seat with a 35 3/8 in (90 cm) backrest, and the seat alone cost less again. The small gaps at the angled ends can be filled with throw pillows.
- A common question
I'd like backrests in gingham that match the color of the cushions I bought earlier. Can you match it exactly?
The workshop's answerThe backrests can be made, but the gingham fabrics come from a different mill than the earlier order, so an exact match isn't guaranteed; the tone may be close rather than identical. Send the measurements, the code from the gingham chart and a photo of the earlier cushions, and the workshop sets up a custom order.
- A common question
Can you quote one order with a velvet floor cushion set and three bench cushions together?
The workshop's answerYes. Four pieces went on one quote: a velvet floor cushion set and three bench cushions, the longest a 108 5/8 x 23 5/8 in (276 x 60 cm) linen piece. The multi-item order was discounted by about 10 percent, and production took 10 days.
Now, the reading
A seat with a square bite out of every corner
A buyer messaged the workshop needing one big cushion with a square notch at every corner, each 2 3/8 x 2 3/8 in (6 x 6 cm). Overall it ran 78 x 41 3/8 in (198 x 105 cm): 73 1/4 in (186 cm) between the notches on the long side, 36 5/8 in (93 cm) between them on the short side.
They paid on the plain rectangle listing first. The shop cancelled that order with a full refund and sent the custom-shape listing, where checkout asks for the drawing. Then a snag: 41 3/8 in (105 cm) of depth was past that listing's 40 1/8 in (102 cm) maximum. The advice was to pick the largest range, because production follows the uploaded drawing. The reorder went straight to production.
A chart shows the average coast; your drawing shows the rocks. The size range only sets the price. If your seat has posts or notches, start with notched cushion cutouts and the custom-shape drawing.
Pinned by Callum: five marks from the tiles up
Five pins climb the photo from the oak legs and terracotta tiles to the rust pillow and the white enamel pitcher of wildflowers.

- Mustard bench cushion
Mustard sits between the oak bench and terracotta floor in tone.
- Oatmeal pillow
A neutral linen pillow keeps the island side from looking bare.
- Rust pillow
Rust repeats the floor tiles one level higher.

White enamel matches the cabinetry and holds the color in one spot.
- Farmhouse bench legs
Chunky oak stretchers suit a cushion with a firm box edge.

One stripe in the room, and it's on the floor
Count the patterns in this kitchen. There's one. The striped jute runner under the bench carries it, and everything above the floor is either a plain color or a texture. That's the whole trick to mixing stripes, plains and texture: give each layer one job and don't let two layers fight over it.
The seat is the plain. A mustard box cushion, cut to the exact top of the oak bench, thick enough to take the hardness out of the planks and thin enough to keep your elbows at island height. Self piping keeps the outline in the same mustard, so the only lines in the lower half of the picture are the runner's stripes.
Mustard is a weather call. Oak on one side, terracotta tile on the other, both warm. A red would have tipped the corner orange-heavy; mustard sits between the two tones and settles the argument. In warm kitchen daylight it glows without shouting.
Then the texture. An oatmeal linen pillow and a rust linen pillow lean on the island panel as a makeshift back. Slub linen shows its weave up close and reads plain from the stools, so it adds depth without adding pattern. The rust repeats the floor tiles one level higher. The white enamel pitcher matches the cabinetry and parks the loose color of the wildflowers in one spot.
What's already striped in your kitchen? Start there. If the answer is nothing, the cushion can take the stripe, like the knotted stripe cushions in the gallery, and the runner goes plain. The cloth family is performance and pet-friendly fabric; the shape sits with our bench cushions and kitchen nook cushions.

If the runner under a bench is striped, keep the bench cushion plain: one stripe per sightline, with linen pillows bringing the texture.

Questions buyers ask next
Can a striped runner and a striped bench cushion share one kitchen?
They can if the stripes differ clearly in width and one of them is quiet, but the safer rule is one stripe per sightline. In this kitchen the jute runner carries the stripe and the mustard cushion stays plain, so nothing competes.
What cushion color suits an oak bench on terracotta tile?
A color that sits between the two warm tones. Mustard works here because it is lighter than terracotta and deeper than the oak, so the bench reads warm rather than orange-heavy. Repeat the tile color once, higher up, in a pillow.
Do throw pillows work on a bench with no back?
Only if something stands behind them. Here two linen pillows lean against the kitchen island panel, which acts as a makeshift backrest. On a bench out in the open, pillows slide off, and a fitted backrest cushion is the better choice.
