An oatmeal kitchen bench cushion cut thick enough to meet the end panel

A kitchen is weather indoors: steam off the sink, flour in the air, butter on somebody's fingers. This cushion was cut for all of it, and cut to exactly the right height.

The quick answer

A kitchen storage bench cushion looks built in when its top sits level with the bench's raised end panel, so choose thickness to meet that line rather than by habit. Add the thickness to the bench height to check seat height at the table. Slim works too: the logbook below runs from 1.5 in (3.8 cm) to 3 in (7.6 cm).

Pinned by Callum: cushion, check, loaf, dish towel and daffodils

Five pins from the seat up to the countertop, and every one is about who sits here at breakfast.

  1. oatmeal box cushion

The cushion sits flush with the raised end panel, turning a chest into a seat.

  2. buffalo-check pillow

One check pillow is enough pattern next to a plain cushion.

  3. loaf on willow plate

Blue-and-white china adds the only cool note in a warm kitchen.

  4. sprigged tea towel

A tea towel draped over the edge breaks the cushion's straight front.

  5. jug of daffodils

Yellow flowers bring the color so the cushion can stay neutral.

Why the bench cushion sits level with the end panel

Look at the line where the cushion meets the bench end. The oatmeal box cushion is thick enough that its top runs level with the raised end panel. That one decision turns a painted storage chest at the end of a kitchen island into seating that looks built in. Too thin and the panel stands up like a fence; too thick and the cushion spills over it.

The fabric is outdoor acrylic, a cloth made for rain, sitting a step away from a white farmhouse sink. I spent my working life cutting canvas for weather, friend, and a kitchen has plenty of it. Oatmeal melts into the cream cabinets and the cream range, so the terracotta quarry tiles and a white pitcher of yellow daffodils get to bring the color.

The styling is pure breakfast. A sourdough loaf on a blue willow plate, the only cool note in a warm room. A yellow sprigged dish towel draped over the front edge, breaking the cushion's straight line. A wooden butter dish, a green tea tin, beams overhead. One beige buffalo-check pillow is all the pattern a plain cushion needs.

How far is it from your bench top to the table edge? Measure that before anything else. The seat height calculator and our notes on banquette cushion thickness and table height do the arithmetic.

An L-shaped banquette at 2 in, as one piece

A buyer in the US had an L-shaped kitchen banquette, 18 x 70 in (46 x 178 cm) on one run and 18 x 42 in (46 x 107 cm) on the other, and wanted it as one piece. They sent a photo and a sheet of re-measured dimensions. That second sheet is worth its weight in gold: numbers taken twice agree with the bench, not with your memory of it.

They chose 2 in (5 cm) thickness, a dusty mauve velvet (117) with light blush lilac piping (116), and the workshop quoted it through a custom link.

On an 18 in (46 cm) deep seat, 2 in is slim and neat, and it keeps a banquette at an easy height against the table. The lesson is short: a smaller L can be one cushion if the sketch is clear. For the corner itself, see L-shaped cushion corner joints, and there is more under kitchen nook cushions and bench cushions.

Buyer questions: a stuck zipper, real cowhide and a 1.5 in seat

  1. A common question

My cushion arrived with the zipper stuck. Is it broken?

    The workshop's answer

Usually not. The fabric tape underneath has caught in the teeth. Gently pull the fabric free with your fingers, slide the zipper back a little, then forward again. If it still won't move, contact the workshop and they'll sort it out.

  2. A common question

Can you make window seat cushions in real cowhide, not a printed hide?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Two foam-filled seat cushions of 17.5 x 19.5 x 3 in (44.5 x 49.5 x 7.6 cm) were agreed in natural tri-color cowhide, real hide rather than a print. The workshop can source the hide or use one you supply.

  3. A common question

Can a bench cushion be really thin, only 1.5 inches?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. A 38 x 15 x 1.5 in (97 x 38 x 3.8 cm) velvet bench cushion with contrast piping was quoted at that thickness.

Questions buyers ask next

Why use outdoor fabric on an indoor kitchen bench?

Outdoor acrylic is woven to live with rain and sun, so a splash from the sink or a buttery hand is less of an event than on a delicate indoor weave. In oatmeal it also blends into cream cabinets.

Can a small L-shaped kitchen banquette cushion be one piece?

Yes, with a clear sketch. One banquette with runs of 18 x 70 in and 18 x 42 in (46 x 178 and 46 x 107 cm) was quoted as a single 2 in (5 cm) cushion from a photo and re-measured dimensions.

How do I choose thickness for a storage bench with raised ends?

Measure from the bench top to the top of the end panel and use that as your starting thickness, so the cushion sits level. Then add it to the bench height to confirm the seat works at your table.
