The quick answer

Yes, 4 in (10 cm) is the standard thickness for bench, window seat and floor cushions, and it's what most listing photos show. Most buyers keep 4 in and find it comfortable. 3 in (7.5 cm) is the usual thinner choice, and 2, 5, 6, 6.5, 7 and 8 in have been made, up to 12 in for sofa seats. Before you move off the 4 in default

  • Check the seat height with the cushion on. Bench height plus thickness is what your knees feel; run it through the seat height calculator.
  • Look at the listing photo you liked. Most show 4 in, so the look in your head is probably 4 in.
  • Ask to see 3 in (7.5 cm) first. The workshop can send photos of a 3 in example.
  • Write thickness as its own number, such as '4 in thick', so nobody reads it as seat depth. The measurements pattern untangles the words.
  • Put it in the order or the quote request. That is where the cutter reads it.

What extra inches do to a quote

Thickness scales the whole block of foam, so on a long cushion it moves the price fast. On one individually quoted bench cushion, 111.5 x 34 in (283 x 86 cm), 5 in came to about a third more than 4 in, and 7 in to nearly double.

That's why most people who ask end up at 4 in, and why 3 in is the usual step down. The window seat thickness pattern weighs 2 to 5 in side by side, and more sizes live under bench cushions. What does your bench measure from floor to top, partner?

Most bench cushion buyers keep the standard 4 in thickness; on one long bench quote, 7 in came to nearly double the 4 in price.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What thickness is the cushion, and can I change it?

    The workshop's answer

The standard is 4 in (10 cm), as in most listing photos. Thickness can be customized, for example 3 in (7.5 cm) or thicker, and the workshop can send photos of a 3 in example.

  2. A common question

How thick are your bench and floor cushions, and can I pick another thickness?

    The workshop's answer

4 in (10 cm) is standard for bench and floor cushions. Custom orders have also been made 3, 6 and 6.5 in thick; put the thickness in your request.

  3. A common question

How thick are your bench cushions?

    The workshop's answer

The standard bench cushion is 4 in thick. Other thicknesses are made to order, from 3 in up to 12 in for sofa seat cushions.

  4. A common question

Can I get it thicker or thinner than standard?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 in have all been quoted, and thicker cushions cost more: on one long bench quote, 5 in came to about a third more than 4 in and 7 in nearly double. Most customers choose 4 in and find it comfortable.

Questions buyers ask next

Can I order an in-between thickness such as 4.5 in?

Yes. Choose the nearest thickness option and write the exact figure, such as 4.5 in, in the personalization section. If you picked the wrong option by mistake, tell the workshop before production starts.

How firm is the foam inside a 4 in bench cushion?

Very firm. The cushions use high-density foam of about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) that supports without sinking and keeps its shape for years. For a clean, firm seat, it can be made smooth with no tufting.

Can I stack two cushions instead of ordering one very thick one?

Yes, for floor seating. Two stacked 6 in (15 cm) cushions cost noticeably less than one 12 in (30 cm) cushion, and a foam base can go under a tufted top for extra height.
