A taupe ticking stripe custom bench cushion on a Scandi oak dining bench, and the 2 inch rule

Soft morning, pale oak, coffee going cold. The pad on this bench is thin on purpose, and the reason sits under the table, where the knees go.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion for a backless dining bench works best at about 2 in (5 cm) thick, so people on the bench sit level with the chairs opposite and their knees still clear the table. Cut it to the full seat depth and flush with the bench ends; when two benches sit side by side, give both the same thickness and piping.

Three buyer questions, before the bench

  1. A common question

Can you make back cushions and armrests to turn an IKEA sofa bed into a lounge?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop makes a set of two backrests, two armrests and a mattress cover, for example in soft fabric 925, and sends a picture of the proposed set for you to approve.

  2. A common question

French-style tufted bench cushion: does it include the backrest, or just the seat?

    The workshop's answer

It includes the seat cushion, the backrest cushion and the armrests. The size options refer to the seat cushion's width and length only; the backrest and armrests are made to match.

  3. A common question

What happens if I write a fabric code that doesn't exist, or it's unclear which code is which?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop checks codes before cutting and asks. 'L105' isn't a real code, so the question went back: velvet 105 cream, or linen L-05? A note reading 'L-22' and 'L-2' was confirmed as body and piping. Production waits until you confirm.

Now, the reading

A real project

Two storage benches that had to read as one

A buyer messaged the workshop with two IKEA BESTA units used as benches, one 70 7/8 x 16 1/2 in (180 x 42 cm) and one 47 1/4 x 16 1/2 in (120 x 42 cm). They wanted cushions 2 3/4 in (7 cm) thick with piping, and weighed a maroon (944) against a cream linen (L05) with coffee piping (918).

The lesson held whichever color won: the same thickness and the same piping on both, so a pair of units reads as one built-in seat. That job had no table to clear, so 2 3/4 in (7 cm) sat fine. Pull a bench up to a dining table and the arithmetic changes.

Five pins at the breakfast table

Five pins, each one about height, length or warmth.

  1. Ticking stripe bench pad

Fine taupe and gray stripes run the length of the bench, lining up with the table edge.

  2. Matching oak bench frame

The pad ends flush with the oak so bench and table read as a set.

  3. Terracotta wheat vase

The terracotta vase is the one warm note tying the pastries to the oak.

  4. Plate of cinnamon buns

Food on the table shows this is a daily breakfast bench, not a hallway piece.

  5. Birch in planter

A birch sapling adds height, and its pale bark matches the stripe colors.

Height, depth and the knees under the table

Weather tells you what a boat cushion needs; a breakfast table tells you what a bench pad needs. On this backless oak bench the pad is kept to about 2 in (5 cm). People on the bench sit level with the chairs opposite, and knees still clear the underside of the table. Go much thicker and the bench crowd sits high, elbows up, knees knocking.

The pad runs the full seat depth and ends flush with the oak at both ends, so bench and table read as one set. Fine taupe and gray ticking stripes run the length of the bench, lining up with the table edge and stretching the whole arrangement along the window.

The palette holds to oak, terracotta and oatmeal, with the stripe adding a cooler gray for balance. The terracotta vase of dried wheat is the one warm note tying the cinnamon buns to the oak. Buns and stoneware cups say this is a daily breakfast bench, not a hallway piece, and the young birch in its white planter adds height, its pale bark matching the stripe. Buyers with young children often ask for a zipper so the cover can come off for washing; at a breakfast table, it earns its keep.

How far is it from your bench seat to the underside of your table? Run it through the seat height calculator and the Pattern on cushion thickness and table height. More in bench cushions and kitchen nook cushions; the ticking here is an outdoor acrylic, brought indoors for a table that sees jam.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I work out the most thickness a dining bench can take?

Measure the seat height of the chairs across the table and the bare bench height. The difference is the most you can add and still sit level; on the oak bench here, about 2 in (5 cm) does it.

Should a dining bench pad stop short of the bench ends?

No. Cut it flush with both ends and to the full seat depth, so bench and table read as a set. A pad that stops short leaves hard wood right where people slide on and off.

Is a zipper worth adding to a breakfast bench pad?

Yes. Buyers with young children often ask for one, and on a bench that sees coffee and jam every morning, a removable cover is simpler to wash than the whole cushion.
