The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

What's the most scratch-resistant cushion fabric if my cats claw furniture?

Also asked as:Is this fabric cat friendly?Cat-proof cushion fabric?

Every porch I ever sat on had a cat, and every cat had an opinion about the cushions. You can't win that argument outright, but you can pick a fabric that loses it slowly.

A denim blue bullnose cushion softens a white mudroom bench. The rounded front edge is easy on legs when you sit to pull on boots.

The quick answer

No cushion fabric is truly claw-proof, but tightly woven, loop-free fabrics snag far less, because claws catch on loops. For cats, the first pick is the pet-friendly chart, whose codes start with G: tight weaves that are less tempting to scratch and tougher against claws. A corduroy described as high-resilience and scratch-resistant is another option. Order swatches first and let the cats test them.

What holds up to claws

  • A tight, flat weave. Claws hook into loops, and the workshop's fabrics are tightly woven without them.
  • The pet-friendly G chart. Less tempting to scratch and tougher against claws, in good taupes and neutrals. See performance and pet-friendly fabrics.
  • The scratch-resistant corduroy, one of three fabrics picked for pet owners: high-resilience and easy to clean, though pet hair does cling to it.
  • A zippered cover with no tufting, so the cover comes off for the wash and there are no buttons to pull.

What invites trouble

  • Looped weaves such as bouclé, where a claw goes in and comes out with a loop.
  • Button tufting, in a house with a cat that pulls buttons.
  • Any promise that a cat simply can't scratch a fabric.
  • Ordering the full cushion before the cat has met a swatch.

Let the cat vote first

A buyer in the US wrote in with two cats, asking which fabric they'd find least tempting. The answer was the pet-friendly chart. Another had kids, dogs and cats all at once, and got the honest version: nothing is claw-proof, but a tight weave without loops loses slowly. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, and cats are the inspectors.

So order swatches, lay them where the cat naps, and watch. The pet-friendly fabric pattern and pet-friendly cushions go further, and bench cushions show the shapes. Which end of the bench does your cat claim first?

For a cushion in a house with cats, choose a tight weave with no loops and a zippered cover without button tufting, then let the cat test a swatch.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

I have kids, dogs and cats. Which fabric will hold up, and is anything claw-proof?

    The workshop's answer

No fabric is fully claw-proof. The fabrics are tightly woven without loops, and flat, tight weaves snag much less because claws catch on loops. The pet-friendly performance chart has good taupes and neutrals; swatches let you, and your pets, test it first.

  2. A common question

We have two cats. Which fabric is least tempting for them to scratch?

    The workshop's answer

The pet-friendly chart, the G series. Those fabrics are tightly woven, less attractive to claws and more durable against them.

  3. A common question

My cats scratch. Which fabric is the most scratch-resistant?

    The workshop's answer

Three fabrics are chosen specifically for pet owners. The corduroy is one of them: a high-resilience fabric that resists scratching and is easy to clean.

  4. A common question

Is the corduroy good with cats and dogs, and does pet hair stick to it?

    The workshop's answer

It's described as pet friendly and hard to scratch, and the covers come off for the washing machine. Pet hair does cling to it; faux leather covers are available if that's a concern.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a cushion for a house with pets be tufted?

Better not. Every cover is removable and washable except on button-tufted pieces, so for shedding pets or cats that pull buttons, order the cushion untufted with a zippered cover.

Can I protect a couch from cats with a washable layer?

Yes. A quilted sofa topper is a slim, reversible layer made to your couch's size in linen or velvet, meant to protect a couch from pets and kids, and it machine washes at 86°F (30°C).

What colors does the pet-friendly chart come in?

Good taupe and neutral tones, from light to dark. G-47 is a warm cream oatmeal, G-61 a deep charcoal gray and G-62 an almost-black anthracite.
