A Reading by HarlanBolster Pillows
Two gray taupe bolster pillows, read in morning, evening and screen light
Harlan reads a pair of heathered linen-look bolsters on an oatmeal daybed and explains why a color one step darker holds steady in every light the day throws at it.
The quick answer
Choose daybed bolster pillows one tone darker than the mattress cover, in a heathered linen-look weave, and judge the pair on a swatch in daylight rather than on a screen. The darker step keeps the set reading as one piece from morning to lamplight, and the mixed yarn hides crumbs on a seat that doubles as a guest bed.

One shade darker, and why it holds from breakfast to lamplight
A bolster that matches its mattress perfectly at noon can look like a stranger by suppertime. I learned that the slow way, fifty-some years ago, re-covering a parlor set nobody had thought to look at under a lamp.
This photograph shows the right way. Two gray taupe bolster pillows lie on a boxed oatmeal daybed cushion, inside a white frame with beadboard, over oak floorboards. The first roll sits snug against the arm panel with no gap, because its length was cut to the inside depth between the back and the front rail. Both end caps carry self piping in the same heathered cloth, so the pair reads as one set rather than two purchases.
Now the light. The room is lit flat and even, the kind of daylight that tells the truth. In it, the step between taupe and oatmeal is small and quiet. Come evening, a warm lamp pushes the oatmeal toward cream and deepens the taupe, and that one-shade step is what keeps the bolsters' outline instead of melting them into the mattress. On a phone screen the same grays can lean blue or pink, so judge a swatch in the room, not a picture of one. The screen versus swatch Pattern walks through it.
The oak floor is there for warmth under all those cool grays, and the white beadboard keeps the frame out of the conversation. Nothing else sits on this daybed, and nothing else is needed. A seam is a promise, and so is a color chosen in the right light.
More pairs live among the bolster pillows and the linen-look fabrics, and full sets among the daybed cushions. What color does your daybed turn after the lamps come on, my friend?
The four colors this daybed is really made of
- Heathered gray taupe#8B8177The bolsters. Mixed yarns hide crumbs and hold their outline under a warm lamp.
- Oatmeal#D8CDBAThe boxed mattress cover, one step lighter than the bolsters.
- Beadboard white#F1EFE9The frame. It stays quiet in every light.
- Oak floor#B38B5DWarmth underfoot, so the grays never turn cold at dusk.

Old upholsterers will tell you the real cutting happens in the conversation, long before the shears come out. Tell the workshop what you sit on, and they will talk it through with you. — Harlan
Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Four bolsters in a new cloth, and the question asked before cutting
A buyer who had ordered from the workshop before wrote in for four round bolsters: two 31 1/2 in (80 cm) long and two 15 3/4 in (40 cm) long, all about 6 in (15 cm) across, with piping in a different shade from the body.
Before a single cut, the workshop noticed something. The bolster fabric was not the one from the earlier order; only the piping matched. So they asked. The buyer wrote back that it was on purpose, to contrast with the mattresses. When the bolsters arrived, the note said the quality and the colors were lovely.
That is how it ought to go. The old hands I learned from used to say you can unpick a seam but not a cut, so the question comes first. Contrast chosen on purpose is design; contrast by accident is a phone call nobody enjoys. Lengths and diameters like these are covered in bolster diameter and length.
- Sizes
- 2 x 31 1/2 in (80 cm) and 2 x 15 3/4 in (40 cm) long, all about 6 in (15 cm) in diameter
The lesson: Flag any fabric difference from an earlier order before cutting; the buyer may intend it, but confirm it.
Buyer questions: covers alone, thin toppers and bolsters bought later
- A common question
I already have the foam. Could you sew just the cover, even for a thick twin XL mattress?
The workshop's answerYes. Covers alone go through the zippered cover listing: choose your dimensions and write your color in the personalization note. A linen cover with a hidden zipper for a 38 x 80 x 10 in (97 x 203 x 25 cm) twin XL mattress was made at the full 10 in thickness at no extra charge.
- A common question
Could you make a thin tufted topper, about 1 in thick, that goes in the washing machine?
The workshop's answerNo. A tufted cushion can't be made as thin as 1 in (2.5 cm). The workshop can sell the same fabric by the yard so you can have a protective throw made, and it sews covers for large pillows, such as 26 in (66 cm).
- A common question
Can I order only the round armrest bolsters, or add a matching one later?
The workshop's answerYes. Round armrest bolsters can be ordered on their own in your color, in custom lengths such as 31 1/2 in (80 cm), and a single bolster can be added to a repeat set. The workshop keeps fabric stock, so matching backrests or bolsters can be made later in the same color.
Order daybed bolster pillows one tone darker than the mattress cover, and the pair still reads as one set under a warm lamp at night.

Questions buyers ask next
Why do gray bolsters look different on a phone than on the daybed?
A screen sets its own brightness and color balance, and a heathered gray is made of mixed yarns that lean warm or cool with the light around them. A physical swatch, seen in daylight and again under a lamp, is the reliable test.
What length should a bolster be on a daybed with arm panels?
Cut it to the inside depth of the daybed, measured between the back and the front rail, so the rolled end sits snug against the arm panel with no gap. Custom lengths are made to your number, for example 31 1/2 in (80 cm).
Should bolster piping match the bolster or the mattress?
Either works if it is chosen on purpose. In the photo, both end caps are piped in the bolster's own heathered cloth, which keeps the pair calm. The four-bolster order in this Reading contrasted the body with the mattresses by design.
Is a heathered weave practical on a daybed that doubles as a guest bed?
Yes. A heathered linen-look mixes lighter and darker yarns, so crumbs, lint and light wear blend in instead of sitting on one flat color. That matters on a seat people also sleep on.
Sit well. — Harlan
