A dusty rose gingham corner floor cushion, read from the floor up

A quarter-circle seat, two backrest pillows, a shelf of terracotta overhead. Harlan takes a cottage corner apart layer by layer to show how thickness and depth decide the sitting.

The quick answer

A corner floor cushion is sized by its two straight sides against the walls; on a 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) cushion the curved front runs about 75.4 in. Its thickness is your seat height, so choose it for how you sit: lower for cross-legged reading, higher for knees-down lounging. Backrest pillows borrow depth from the seat, so allow for them.

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

A seat with no legs: thickness is the whole height

A floor cushion has no legs, my friend, so its thickness is its seat height. Every other proportion follows from that one number.

This corner holds a quarter-circle pouf in dusty rose gingham, box-edged with self piping, tucked into white shiplap under a pine shelf of terracotta pots. Two gingham backrest pillows lean against the walls. It is a small seat that looks right, and the reason is proportion.

A thin cushion on a deep quarter circle reads like a rug you can sit on. A thick cushion on a shallow one reads like a hassock shoved into a corner. This one sits between: enough lift to get you off the floorboards, enough depth that the backrest pillows don't crowd your knees.

Measure a corner floor cushion the way the workshop does, by the two straight sides along the walls. On a 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) cushion the curved front runs about 75.4 in (192 cm). That arc is what people forget when they check it against a rug.

Then choose the height by how you sit. Cross-legged readers do well lower; anyone who sits knees-down with feet flat wants more lift. The seat height calculator and the floor cushion thickness guide turn that into inches, and the corner floor cushions atlas shows the shapes. What do you do most in a corner like this: read, nap or talk?

The corner, taken apart from the floor up

  1. Two rugs: a gray one under a vintage floral one, softening the line where cushion meets floor.
  2. The seat: a quarter circle in dusty rose and cream gingham, sized by its two wall sides. Its thickness is the only height you get.
  3. The edge: a straight box gusset with self piping, rose on rose, so the curve stands square to the floor without a loud outline.
  4. The backrest pillows: one per wall, in the same check. They borrow a few inches of seat depth, which is why a corner cushion should be deeper than it first seems to need.
  5. The wall: horizontal shiplap boards running against the grid of the check, one set of lines behind another.
  6. The left side: a fern in terracotta on the floor and a white side table with a pleated lamp, filling the frame at seat height where an elbow wants a surface.
  7. The shelf: pine, loaded with terracotta pots and trailing pothos, hung right above the pouf so the corner reads as a room within a room. Dusty rose is terracotta in a softer mood, so seat and pots tell one color story.
  8. The top: a round wooden clock and stacked books, a place for the eye to stop.

Dusty rose is the pattern version of terracotta, so seat and pots read as one color story.

  2. Left backrest pillow

The check's grid plays against the horizontal shiplap boards behind.

  3. Pine plant shelves

A shelf of plants right above the pouf makes the corner a room within a room.

  4. Wooden wall clock

A small round clock gives the eye a stopping point at the top of the frame.

  5. Fern in terracotta

Greenery at floor level balances the trailing plants above.

The color that wasn't, and a swatch lesson

A buyer wrote in who loved the quality and the size of a velvet corner cushion, but not its color. It simply wasn't what they had hoped.

Sending a cushion that big back would have cost more than it was worth. So the workshop offered a second cushion in another color at cost, well under its usual price. The other choice was to return the first one at the buyer's expense for a refund.

Nobody did anything wrong. A screen showed one color and a living room showed another. Buy the cushion once, cry once, and get there by ordering swatches first. The checked linen and gingham library is a good place to start pulling samples.

Buyer questions: arcs, parcels and floor sofa quotes

  1. A common question

How do you measure a quarter-circle corner floor cushion?

    The workshop's answer

By the two straight sides that sit against the walls, for example 48 x 48 in. On that size the curved outer edge is about 75.4 in. For an unusual space, send a photo and draw the sizes on paper.

  2. A common question

Will all my packages show up on the same day?

    The workshop's answer

Not always. Everything ships together, but the courier may deliver parcels on different days. A modular sofa comes as three rolled, vacuum-sealed packages plus a separate package of metal bars, so wait for every tracking number before worrying.

  3. A common question

How is a custom-size floor sofa set with a backrest and armrests priced?

    The workshop's answer

Each set is quoted on its own size and configuration. Quotes have run from a small 22 x 28 in set, through a 28 x 56 in linen set and a 16 x 72 in set with a back and two armrests, up to four 38 x 75 in cushions with two backrests and four armrests.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a corner floor cushion be?

Thick enough to lift you off the floor, and matched to how you sit. Cross-legged readers do well lower; people who sit knees-down want more height. Because the cushion is the whole seat, its thickness is your seat height.

Do I need backrest pillows on a corner floor cushion?

They turn it into a seat you can lean into for an hour instead of a place to perch. Use one per wall, and remember they take some depth from the seat, so a deeper quarter circle suits backrest pillows better.

Is gingham a good fabric for a floor cushion?

A small two-color check is forgiving: it breaks up crumbs, dents and small marks that plain pale fabric would show. Dusty rose and cream gingham also sits well with terracotta, pine and green plants in a cottage room.

Should I order fabric swatches for a floor cushion?

Yes. Screens shift color, and a large cushion is costly to send back. One buyer liked the quality and size of their corner cushion but not the color, and was offered a second one at cost rather than a return.
