A Reading by MaggieDining Chair Cushions & Pads
Three striped box cushions stacked in coral, navy and rose, and the piping decision behind them
Three stripes, one cream ground, and a piping choice that decides whether a set of dining chair cushions looks tailored or merely bought. Maggie makes the call.
The quick answer
For striped dining chair cushions, self piping cut from the same stripe gives the calmest, most tailored edge, because the outline melts into the pattern. These three box cushions, wide coral, fine navy pencil and medium dusty rose on one cream ground, are self piped with the stripes running down the gusset in line with the top. Contrast piping outlines harder; no piping reads softer.

SavePinned by Maggie: three stripes and a corner
Four pins, one per stripe and one on the self-piped corner where the line is decided.

- Wide coral stripe
A wide coral band on cream sets the warmest note in the trio.
- Navy pencil stripe
A fine navy line calms the two warmer stripes either side.
- Dusty rose stripe
A medium-width rose bridges the coral and the navy.
- Self-piped corner
Each cushion is piped in its own stripe for a neat, color-matched edge.

Three stripes, one cream ground
Stack three cushions and you learn more in ten seconds than in ten minutes of scrolling swatches.
Here's the trio. A wide coral band on cream, the warmest note. A fine navy pencil stripe, the calm one in the middle. A medium dusty rose, which bridges the two. They share one cream ground, and that's the whole trick: fix the ground color, vary only the stripe width and hue, and the set mixes without a fight. Put one on each chair around a table and they still read as a family. Add ties and you have dining chair cushions that stay put, too.
Now the part I care about. Each cushion is boxed with self piping cut from its own stripe, and the stripes turn down the gusset in line with the top. That's what separates tailored from bought. If the stripe on the side jogs even a little from the stripe on top, the eye catches it from across the room. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and on stripes there's nowhere to hide.
I'll own a mistake: years ago I piped a coral stripe in navy because the two swatches looked smart side by side. On the chair it drew a hard box around a cushion that was already busy. Self piping would have let the stripe do the talking.
The warm greige studio sweep keeps the cream from turning stark. The cotton stripes live on the striped cotton and ticking shelf. For the whole argument, read matching, contrast or no piping and which way a stripe should run. Which stripe would you give the chair at the head of your table?
