Three striped floor cushions, and why their box edges let them stack like books

Blue on blush on taupe, piled on an oak floor. They sit square because their edges are square. Three knife-edge pillows would have slid apart by lunchtime.

The quick answer

A box edge is the right shape for floor cushions you plan to stack, sit on and pull out for guests. The straight side wall keeps each cushion the same height from corner to corner, so three can pile flat. Knife-edge pillows taper to one seam and slide; rounded corners soften the look but leave gaps in a stack.

Pinned by Harlan, top to bottom

Five pins, from the cool blue stripe nearest the window down to the taupe that holds the pile to the floor.

  1. Blue stripe top cushion

The coolest stripe sits on top, nearest the window light.

  2. Blush stripe cushion

A soft pink links the blue and taupe.

  3. Taupe stripe base

The darkest stripe grounds the stack on the floor.

  4. Seagrass basket plant

Height and green balance the low pile.

  5. Garden window

Morning light warms the soft stripes.

Four edges I could have cut, and the one I would

Look at the side of the stack before you look at the stripes. Each cushion has a straight wall, and that wall is what lets blue sit on blush and blush sit on taupe without a wobble. Box cushions were made for this job.

A knife edge tapers to a single seam, full in the middle and thin at the rim. Stack three of those and you have a pile of river stones. Fine on a sofa, poor on a floor. Rounded corners are kind to shins in a busy room, but they leave little gaps when you pile them. Angled corners belong to benches with odd frames, not to a spare seat you drag across oak. The whole comparison is drawn out in box edge vs knife edge.

The piping is self piping, cut from each striped cloth. It traces the top rim like a pencil line and keeps the box honest when somebody sits down hard.

Now the order of the colors. The coolest stripe sits on top, nearest the garden window, where morning sun warms it. Taupe, the darkest, goes on the floor, because dark belongs underfoot. Blush sits between them like a middle child keeping the peace. The seagrass basket and its big-leaved plant stand to the left to give the low pile some height, and the white window frame keeps the corner fresh.

For floor use, my friend, I would ask for slightly firmer foam and a zipper on every cover, so each one comes off and washes on its own. More shapes live in the floor cushions atlas and in living room cushions. How many seats do you need on the busiest night of your year?

Three stripes and the floor they sit on

  • Cornflower blue#7FA1D6Top of the pile, nearest the window, where the sun warms a cool stripe.
  • Blush pink#E8C0BEThe peacekeeper that links blue and taupe.
  • Taupe#A89A8AThe darkest stripe, so it goes on the floor.
  • Ivory#F3EEE3The ground stripe in all three, which is why they belong together.
  • Honey oak#C9A274Floorboards that warm the whole palette in morning light.
A real project

The stripe code that came back the wrong color

A buyer wrote to the workshop for two cushions in a striped upholstery fabric, 20 x 27 in (51 x 69 cm) and 20 x 44 in (51 x 112 cm). She chose the stripe by quoting a series code. When the cushions arrived, the color was not the one she had in mind, and one size felt off to her.

The workshop had cut the code she gave. Still, a code is only letters on a screen. The shop let her keep both cushions and remade the pair in the right color at half the price, and she used the chance to adjust the sizes to 20 x 26 in (51 x 66 cm) and 20 x 44 in (51 x 112 cm).

The lesson I keep from it: send a photo of the exact fabric and its code back to the buyer before the shears come out. With stripes, one letter in a code can mean a different room. Fabric swatches before ordering explains the habit.

Floor questions

  1. A common question

Can you make the kids' corner sofa cushion with 39-inch straight sides so it fits my room?

    The workshop's answer

It already comes that way. The kids' corner sofa cushion measures 39 in (100 cm) along each straight side.

  2. A common question

My tufted floor cushion arrived with white buttons, but the photos show dark brown. Can that be fixed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop offered to send brown button covers so the buttons match the photos.

  3. A common question

Could you make a small 20 x 8 in ivory floor cushion for the nook by the fireplace where my cat sleeps?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. That small size is already offered: choose the 8 x 20 in (20 x 51 cm) option on the linen floor cushion listing and place the order.

Stack floor cushions with box edges, not knife edges: a straight side wall keeps three cushions level, while a tapered seam slides off the pile.

Questions buyers ask next

Can floor cushions with rounded corners be stacked?

They can, but rounded corners leave small gaps where the curves meet, so the pile looks less square. For a stack that doubles as a low seat, square box corners sit flatter and keep each cushion the same height edge to edge.

Why use self piping on a striped floor cushion?

Self piping is cut from the same striped cloth, so it outlines the box edge without adding a new color. On three different stripes, a contrast cord would fight the palette; matching cords let each cushion keep its own stripe.

Should each floor cushion in a stack have its own zipper?

Yes. A zipper on every cover means you can take one off and wash it without disturbing the others. Floor cushions get sat on, stepped past and dragged around, so separate covers are the practical choice.

How can I be sure a striped fabric code is the color I expect?

Ask for a photo of the exact fabric and its code before cutting, or order swatches first. Screens shift color, and stripe series often carry near-identical codes that look quite different in daylight.
