Anatomy of an angled ticking-stripe bench cushion by a patio window

The bench is cut across a corner, the window looks onto brick, and the cushion borrows a little from both sides of the glass.

Ticking stripes and black hardware give a light oak bench a graphic edge; the cognac lumbar warms it.

The quick answer

A trapezoid bench cushion for an angled indoor bench is cut to copy the taper exactly, and its slanted side is fixed by the depth and the difference between the long and short edges. Ticking stripe keeps the look crisp, corner ties borrowed from outdoor furniture hold backs in place, and one warm leather pillow keeps black and cream from feeling cold.

The cushion, cut open

Cross-section through the depth, drawn for 4 in (10 cm) on 17¾ in, to proportion.1. Cover fabric: A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.; 2. Piping: A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.; 3. Fiber wrap: Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.; 4. Foam core: About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.; 5. Zipper: Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.; 6. Base panel: The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.1Cover fabric3Fiber wrap2Piping5Zipper6Base panel4Foam core2.0 lb HR foam4 in10 cm17¾ in deep · 45 cm

Taper, stripe and one warm pillow

The left end of this oak storage bench is cut across the corner, and the cushion copies that angle to the edge. No gap at the wall, no overhang at the front. A trapezoid is only a rectangle with one honest correction. Angles are just lengths in disguise.

Black and cream ticking reads almost like a pinstripe from across the room. It picks up the black bar pulls on the oak drawers and the solid black pillow, so the stripe looks planned rather than bought. The seat is box-edged with self piping, which keeps the outline quiet and lets the stripe carry the pattern.

Then the props. A cognac faux leather lumbar sits in the middle, where the eye lands first, and it is the only warm material on the seat. An oatmeal textured pillow sits beside the black one. A gray waffle-knit throw spills over the front edge and breaks up the graphic stripe. Two books and a white mug sit at the angled end, the least useful part of any tapered seat. A jute rug grounds it all.

The sash window looks onto a brick patio, and that is the angle here. Take the patio's habits: corner ties instead of hook-and-loop, and cushions that lift off in one piece. Keep the soft things indoors: the waffle knit, the leather, the cotton ticking that isn't made for rain. Which of your patio habits would you bring inside? If this bench ever moves to a covered porch, read indoor cushions on a covered porch first, and see ties and non-slip bases for staying put. The stripe family is in striped cotton and ticking.

Pinned by Nate: five points on the angled bench

Five pins, from the cognac lumbar in the middle to the tapered end where the books sit.

  1. Cognac leather lumbar

One warm leather piece stops the black and cream from feeling cold.

  2. Black pillow

A solid black square repeats the darkest stripe and the drawer pulls.

  3. Waffle throw

Soft gray waffle knit spills over the front and breaks the graphic stripe.

  4. Books and mug

Styling sits at the angled end where the seat is least used.

  5. Angled end

The bench is cut across the corner and the cushion copies that taper.

Checking the slanted side in four lines

  1. Subtract the short edge from the long edge

    On the buyer's seat: 110 − 68 = 42 in (about 107 cm).

  2. Halve it for a symmetric trapezoid

Each slanted end takes 21 in (53 cm) of that difference.

  3. Combine it with the depth

    √(21² + 23²) = √970 ≈ 31.1 in (79 cm). Order 31 in, not 32.

  4. Read it back

Send the calculated side with your drawing. If it disagrees with your tape, one of the other numbers is off.

A real project

Thirty-two inches on the tape, thirty-one on paper

A buyer sent the workshop a paper template and four numbers for a big trapezoid window seat: 68 in (173 cm) along the top, 110 in (279 cm) along the bottom, 23 in (58.5 cm) deep, and 32 in (81 cm) on each slanted side.

The geometry check didn't agree. With that top, bottom and depth, the sides come out at about 31 in (79 cm). One number had to give. The buyer kept the 23 in depth, which the window fixed, and accepted the calculated 31 in sides.

Then a second wrinkle. The fabric chart the buyer had chosen was discontinued by its manufacturer. The shop sent pet-friendly alternatives, and the buyer picked a replacement from those. Two corrections before cutting, zero remakes after.

On a symmetric trapezoid, partner, the depth and the difference between the parallel edges fix the slanted side. You don't get to choose it. The trapezoid cushion calculator does this math, trapezoid cushion measurements walks the tape, and more tapered seats live in trapezoid cushions and angled corner bench cushions.

Buyer questions: ties, detachable backs and a 10 in cushion

  1. A common question

Can you put a hook-and-loop tab on the back cushion so it grips my wooden backboard?

    The workshop's answer

That isn't something the shop makes. Instead it sews fabric ties to the corners of the back cushion, and you tie them around the wooden back piece to hold it in place.

  2. A common question

Does the ottoman's backrest come off, and is there anything supporting it from behind?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, it is a separate piece you can place wherever you like. Metal bars support it from behind, the same way they hold the standard sofa backrests.

  3. A common question

Can you make a cushion about 10 in (25 cm) thick?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Put two of the 5 in (12.5 cm) thickness options in the cart and write in the personalization note that you want them made as one 10 in (25 cm) cushion, or ask the shop for a custom order link.

On a symmetric trapezoid bench cushion, depth and the edge difference fix the slanted side: a 68 in top and 110 in bottom at 23 in deep give 31 in sides.

Questions buyers ask next

How do I measure a bench that is cut across a corner?

Measure the front, the back along the wall, the depth at a right angle to the wall, and each angled end. Check the angled end against the math. If the corner is not a clean line, tape a paper template to it and send both.

Can a cotton ticking cushion go out on the patio?

Treat cotton ticking as an indoor fabric. Under a roof, a regular fabric is fine but it is not waterproof, as the shop tells buyers. For an open patio, choose an outdoor fabric instead and keep the ticking inside.

Why add a leather pillow to a black and cream cushion?

Black and cream is graphic and can feel cold. One warm material, such as a cognac faux leather lumbar placed in the middle of the seat, gives the eye somewhere warm to land. One piece is enough.
