A pinstripe window seat cushion between green kitchen cabinets, put to the daily test

Rosa reads a deep monochrome pinstripe in a kitchen recess for everything a kitchen throws at a cushion: crumbs, coffee, kids, the dog and the morning sun.

A deep monochrome pinstripe cushion fills the gap between dark green units, turning a kitchen recess into a seat.

The quick answer

A kitchen window seat cushion ages best in a fine stripe that forgives crumbs and coffee rings, cut deep enough to line up with the counters. This black, gray and white pinstripe with self piping fills a recess between green shaker cabinets. Measure wall to wall, then open the window and check handles and latches before fixing the depth.

The seat between the cabinets

Every kitchen has one spot where people end up. In this one it's a window recess between two bottle-green shaker cabinets, and somebody had the good sense to put a cushion in it.

The window seat cushion is a deep box in a black, gray and white pinstripe, cut close to the height of the worktop edge. That's why it looks built in. The top line of the cushion runs on with the white marble counters on either side, and a thin oak lip underneath frames it the way the counter edges are framed.

The self piping carries the stripe around the box edge without a break. On a stripe, contrast piping would draw a hard outline; self piping lets the pinstripe run from top to front like one piece of cloth. The Pattern on stripe direction explains how the cutter lines it up.

Rosemary in a terracotta pot brings the only live green, and a kitchen smell besides. A speckled mug and a round rattan placemat are the only warm, woven things in a cool scheme. Somebody drinks coffee here every morning. You can tell.

Crumbs, coffee, kids and dogs: how a pinstripe holds up

Kids and dogs are the real quality control, neighbor, and a kitchen seat meets both before breakfast. A kitchen nook cushion lives a harder life than the one on the guest bed.

Here's why a pinstripe suits this spot. A fine monochrome stripe breaks up the surface, so a crumb or a small drip doesn't sit alone on a plain field waiting to be noticed. Black and gray hide the everyday; white keeps the seat from going heavy against dark green paint. A pale solid would show every coffee ring by Wednesday.

Striped cotton and ticking is working cloth, honest about what it is. Blot spills quickly rather than rubbing them into the weave, and keep the Pattern on cushion stain first aid handy. Morning sun through a kitchen window is steady, too, so turn the cushion end for end now and then and let both halves take their share.

  1. Self piping

Striped piping keeps the pinstripe continuous around the deep box edge.

  2. Pinstripe top

Black, gray and white stripes suit dark green paint without competing.

  3. Rosemary pot

A herb on the counter brings a live green and a kitchen scent.

  4. Rattan placemat

Rattan adds the only warm, woven texture in a cool scheme.

  5. Oak lip

A thin oak edge under the cushion frames it like the worktop edges.

A real project

The window handle that took 5 inches off the depth

A buyer got in touch for a 21 x 62 in (53 x 157 cm) velvet window seat cushion. Then, before anything was cut, they remembered the window handle. At 21 in deep, the cushion would have hit it every time the window opened.

They cut the depth to 16 in, and the cushion was made at 16 x 62 in (41 x 157 cm) in velvet color 20.

I tell this one on every kitchen and window job. Before you settle the depth, open the window all the way and watch where the handle swings. Latches and trim count too. The Pattern on measuring a window seat cushion walks through the rest.

Buyer questions: columns, trade pricing and a split backrest

  1. A common question

Can you make T-shaped window seat cushions that wrap around columns?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop wouldn't sew T shapes. It drew a plan instead, splitting the three T-shaped seats into six simpler pieces. A contrasting fabric on the front edges can be added at no extra cost.

  2. A common question

I'm an interior designer ordering for a client. Is there a trade discount on custom sizes?

    The workshop's answer

For a 32 x 57.5 in (81 x 146 cm) bench cushion in a stripe, the workshop explained that its custom quote was already its best discounted rate, so no further trade discount applied.

  3. A common question

We need a backrest for a lift-up storage bench in a public welcome center. Could it hang on the wall with hook-and-loop tape?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop can make the backrest as two separate pieces for the 76 in (193 cm) bench, each half the length, sized to the 14 in (36 cm) space between the bench top and the window. Hook-and-loop wall mounting isn't offered at the moment.

Before fixing a window seat cushion's depth, open the window all the way: one buyer's handle cut a 21 in deep cushion down to 16 in.

Questions buyers ask next

Why choose a pinstripe for a seat next to the kitchen counters?

A fine monochrome stripe breaks up the surface, so crumbs and small drips don't stand out the way they do on a pale solid. Black and gray hide everyday marks, while white keeps the seat light against dark cabinets.

Should a kitchen recess cushion line up with the counter height?

Lining the cushion top up with the worktop edge makes a recess seat look built in. Choose the box depth with that line in mind, then check that the seat height is still comfortable for sitting.

Can a window seat cushion be split to fit around a column?

Yes. Rather than sewing complex shapes like a T, the workshop splits them into simpler pieces that sit side by side around the column, and a contrasting front edge can be added.

How do I keep a window handle from hitting the cushion?

Open the window fully and measure from the wall to where the handle swings, then order the cushion shallower than that. One buyer cut a 21 in depth to 16 in for exactly this reason.
