Outdoor cushions for Cyprus verandas, roof terraces and pools

Cyprus asks less of a cushion in rain than almost anywhere I've worked, and more of it in sun. Build for August at noon, and the rest of the year is easy.

The quick answer

Outdoor cushions in Cyprus need UV-resistant outdoor fabric in light colors, zippered covers that wash at 86°F (30°C) for summer dust, and shade between uses. Limassol averages about 3,415 hours of sunshine a year and a July UV index of 11, with almost no summer rain. Covered verandas protect standard foam; open pool decks and roofs need a plan for midday.

3,415 hours of sun and 0.1 rainy days in July

Limassol's climate table, from the Cyprus Meteorological Service, reads like a sunbed's worst dream: about 3,415 hours of sunshine a year, 391 of them in July. Rainy days average 51.8 a year and just 0.1 in July and in August. July and August afternoons average 92 to 93°F (33.5 to 33.7°C).

The island's tourism office puts summer at 11.5 hours of bright sunshine a day across six months, with midday humidity on the central plain as low as 15 to 30%. Hot, dry summers run from mid-May to mid-September.

UV is the headline. Limassol's average UV index peaks at 11 in July, and the EPA's scale calls 8 and up very high to extreme. That fades color and tires fiber, so outdoor cushions in Cyprus start with UV-resistant outdoor fabric, and indoor cloth stays indoors. The Arizona and Southwest page deals with the same dry, hard light, and the Croatia page covers a windier, saltier Mediterranean coast.

Villas, flat roofs and courtyard houses

Three kinds of outdoor seat do most of the work here.

The villa: a pool, a covered veranda and a row of loungers. Under a solid veranda roof, standard foam in outdoor fabric is enough. On the open deck, loungers take the full sun, so plan where they rest at midday. The sunbed size Pattern covers the hinge split.

The flat roof terrace: the sunniest seat on the island, with nothing overhead. Build daybed and bench cushions one person can carry down the stairs.

The village house: in old villages such as Pano Lefkara, bare stone fronts with few openings, rooms arranged around an inner courtyard and flat rammed-earth roofs are typical, and later two-story houses added long balconies. A shaded courtyard bench under a roof can even take an indoor linen-look, as long as it comes in when the winter rain does.

Not every cushion here lives outside. A parent wrote to the workshop about a round reading tunnel built into a children's cabinet, 37.4 in (95 cm) across and 18.1 in (46 cm) deep, with the seat 5.9 in (15 cm) above the lowest point. They wanted medium-firm HR foam that stays flat for an infant, under a washable zip cover. The workshop worked out the curved underside from photos, and production waited until the fabric was chosen: an oatmeal linen-look.

Light colors, washable covers, somewhere shady

Pick light colors. Ivory, sand, stone and dove gray stay cooler under bare legs in August, and they sit easily against limewash and travertine, like the ivory pinstripe by the pool in the photo. Keep the strong colors for small pillows you carry in at night.

The workshop's outdoor range is woven polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, in roughly 150 to 200 colors across several charts. The UV rating varies by code, so ask for yours. For striped loungers, look at the membrane family.

Dust is the other summer job. Every cushion has a zippered cover, and covers wash at 86°F (30°C), inside out, on a gentle cycle; air dry them. Shake and brush the dust off first, or it turns to mud in the drum. The cover washing Pattern has the details.

Winter is short and mild, but it's real: about 60% of the year's rain falls from December to February. Rain doesn't negotiate. Water-repellent fabric sheds a shower, yet water still finds the seams and zipper, and a soaked cushion wants 24 to 48 hours to dry. Where do your loungers spend January, friend?

A real project

A whole garden recovered, foam kept

A buyer sent a list for a whole garden: four seat pads of 18.1 x 18.1 x 2.4 in (46 x 46 x 6 cm), three bench pads of 21.7 x 18.5 x 2.4 in (55 x 47 x 6 cm), two lounger pads of 75.6 x 23.6 x 2 in (192 x 60 x 5 cm) and 74.8 x 19.7 x 2 in (190 x 50 x 5 cm), and eight cushions of 19.3 x 16.9 in (49 x 43 cm), in two fabrics from the membrane chart.

The workshop priced the pieces, then offered the lot as a bundle below the item total. The foam underneath was still sound, so the buyer asked for covers only, and that cut the bill by about a quarter.

That's the Cyprus lesson in one order. In my experience, sun wears out a cover before it wears out good foam. If the foam springs back and smells clean, recover it.

What it taught
If the existing foam is sound, covers only can save roughly a quarter of the cost.

The Cyprus cushion year

  1. Mid-May: wash covers at 86°F (30°C), inside out, on a gentle cycle, and air dry them. Check that every zipper runs.
  2. June to August: stand loungers in shade or indoors when the pool is quiet; the July UV index averages 11.
  3. After a dusty day: shake and brush covers before you wipe them, so the dust doesn't turn to mud.
  4. Mid-September: give every cover a full wash before the rains.
  5. December to February: carry cushions in before storms; a soaked standard-foam cushion needs 24 to 48 hours to dry.
  6. Non-slip bases: wipe them clean; never machine wash or tumble dry them.

In Cyprus the sun works overtime. Pick a color that can take it, and give the cushion somewhere shady to rest.

Buyer questions: zips, spare covers and small parcels

  1. A common question

Do the cushions come with a zipper so I can wash the cover?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Every cushion has a zipper, so the cover comes off for washing, and cover-only orders are made as zippered covers too.

  2. A common question

Can I order a spare cover, now or later?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. An extra cover can be made at any time, now or in the future, in the same fabric or a different one. Buyers who rotate covers for cleaning have asked for a second set in another color, and the workshop quotes that as an option.

  3. A common question

Can you make tight-fitting covers for inserts I already own?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop suggested supplying its own inserts instead, at no change in price. No thickness had been given, and nobody knew whether the old inserts were foam or fiber-filled, which makes a tight fit unpredictable. With matching inserts, everything sits properly.

  4. A common question

The delivery box looks far too small for my order. Is something missing?

    The workshop's answer

Cushions are vacuum-sealed, so the parcel looks small; they expand to full size once opened. Accept the delivery, and if anything is missing, the workshop sends a replacement.

Cyprus outdoor cushion questions

Can pool lounger cushions stay out all summer in Cyprus?

Rain is rarely the problem: Limassol averages 0.1 rainy days in July and August. Sun is. The July UV index averages 11, so store loungers in shade when the pool is quiet, and wash the covers when dust builds up.

What color outdoor fabric suits a Cyprus roof terrace?

Light, warm neutrals: ivory, sand, dove gray or a pinstripe on white. They stay cooler to sit on in 92°F (33°C) afternoons and suit limewashed walls. Ask for the exact code's UV rating, since it varies by code.

Do outdoor cushions need to come in for the Cyprus winter?

Yes, or at least under cover. About 60% of the year's rain falls from December to February, and water-repellent fabric still lets rain in at seams and zippers. Store cushions indoors, clean and dry, in breathable covers.

Is a covered veranda enough for standard foam cushions?

Usually, yes. Under a solid roof, standard foam in outdoor fabric works well; dry-fast foam matters for seats left in the open. Blown rain and dust still reach a veranda, so choose zippered, washable outdoor covers.
