The Cutting Table · a checklist answer

Do you have a dark chocolate or espresso brown linen?

Also asked as:Espresso dark brown color in linen?Which one is the most chocolatey brown?

Yes, though not on the chart most people open first. Brown is a family of many moods; here is how to find yours.

The quick answer

Yes: K22 on the second linen chart is a dark espresso brown linen, because the main linen chart has no true dark brown. For a chocolate brown, compare L38, L77 and L19 in real photos side by side before you choose, and ask to see L38 in daylight, since one answer called it the true black linen.

Finding a brown linen that stays brown

  • For espresso, start with K22. It sits on the second linen chart, not the main one.
  • For chocolate, ask for real photos of L38, L77 and L19 side by side.
  • Ask for L38 in daylight; one answer called it the true black linen.
  • Judge each photo by a window, not only on a bright screen.
  • If velvet is on the table, dark chocolate velvet is 110.

Espresso or chocolate: telling them apart

Espresso is brown with the lights turned low: nearly black, with warmth underneath. Chocolate is brown with the lamp on, redder and softer. On a chart square the two blur; in a real photo, beside each other, they separate at once.

A brown linen on a bench cushion carries a room the way a dark floor does, my friends. It grounds the pale things around it. Let one color speak and the others listen: a deep brown seat wants quiet neighbors. More browns, saddle to mushroom, live in the brown cushion sketches. What wood is your bench, and does it run warm or cool?

A real project

A chocolate piping plan

A buyer in the US asked which of the linens was the most chocolate brown. The shop answered with real photos of three browns, L38, L77 and L19, rather than chart squares. The buyer's plan: L38 as the piping color, set against L-62.

What it taught
Ask for the candidates photographed together, then choose the piping and the body as a pair.

Chocolate brown linen comes down to three codes, L38, L77 and L19; ask for real photos of all three side by side before choosing.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Do you have an espresso or dark brown linen?

    The workshop's answer

The main linen chart has no true dark brown, but the second linen chart does: K22 matches a dark espresso brown.

  2. A common question

Which of your linens is the most chocolate brown?

    The workshop's answer

The shop sent real photos of three browns to compare: L38, L77 and L19. The buyer was planning L38 as a piping color with L-62.

  3. A common question

Can I get any color from your charts on any cushion, and does a custom color cost extra?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Any color on the workshop's fabric charts can be made on any cushion at no extra cost; just order with its code. For colors outside the charts, send a reference image and the closest shade is suggested.

  4. A common question

Will the color look the same in real life as it does on my screen?

    The workshop's answer

Small differences are normal, because screens and daylight change how color reads. Ask for real-life photos, confirm from a photo of the actual fabric before production, or order a swatch to check it in your own room.

Questions buyers ask next

Is there a dark brown in velvet or soft fabric too?

Yes. Dark chocolate velvet is code 110, and the soft fabric range has similar browns at 913-914. Ask for photos of them next to the linen browns if you're choosing between textures.

Does the teddy floor sofa come in dark brown corduroy?

Yes. Dark brown is one of about 9-10 fixed corduroy colors on the teddy sofa, alongside brick, mustard, beige and anthracite. Custom corduroy colors aren't offered, so for another brown, ask about velvet or linen.

Can a brown linen be the piping on a cushion in another linen?

It has been planned that way: one buyer chose L38 as the piping color with L-62. Ask for both codes photographed together, in daylight, so you see the contrast before production begins.
