An orange madras plaid bench cushion, and the rattan, lamp and plant styled around it
Tangerine and mustard checks on a white bench, a dusty-blue wall behind, and not a single throw pillow. Every prop in this room earns its place, and one was left out on purpose.
Tangerine plaid is the warm opposite of a dusty-blue wall, with rattan pieces bridging the two.
The quick answer
A bold plaid bench cushion looks best with no throw pillows and a few natural props that repeat its warmest thread. Here an orange madras check on a white bench meets a rattan sunburst mirror and woven pendant that echo its honey tones, a black floor lamp that anchors the far end, and a dusty-blue wall that plays orange's opposite.
The plaid that did not want pillows
Some cushions need company. This one does not. A custom bench cushion in orange madras, tangerine and mustard crossed with olive and brown threads, runs the length of a white tongue-and-groove bench. Behind it, a wall the color of washed denim gone soft and dusty.
Orange sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so the plaid becomes the warm heart of a cool room. The self-piped edge lets the check run cleanly over the border, with no solid band to interrupt it. A checked linen this lively looks best left clean, and whoever styled this room knew it.
To copy it, keep the bench white so the plaid has a clean frame, then find the cushion's warmest thread and repeat it above in cane or rattan. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does, so hold a swatch against your own wall at noon. Screen color versus daylight explains why. What color is the wall behind your bench?
Pinned by Élodie: rattan, a black lamp and a tangerine check
Five pins, from the madras check itself to the thin black lamp that closes the far end of the bench.

A thin dark line at the end grounds the long bench.

Every prop around the bench, and the job it does
- Rattan sunburst mirror: honey cane above the bench repeats the plaid's warmest threads.
- Woven globe pendant: a second rattan piece carries that warmth up to the ceiling.
- Black adjustable floor lamp: one thin dark vertical that grounds a long seat.
- Leafy plant in a white pot: living green that answers the olive in the check.
- White glazed cabinet with plates and bowls: pale and orderly beside a busy pattern.
- Jute rug and pine floorboards: natural fiber and wood keep the room from turning sweet.
- Throw pillows: none. A check this lively would only argue with them.
A bay window drawn on paper, edge by edge
A buyer in the US asked the workshop for a trapezoid bay window cushion: 105.5 in (268 cm) on the longest side, 51 in (130 cm) on the shortest, 30 in (76 cm) angled sides, 6 in (15 cm) cut-ins and 21 in (53 cm) deep. The workshop asked for a drawing on paper, handed it to the tailor, and sent back a custom order link.
The tailor cuts from the sketch, my friends, so give every edge and every cut-in. With a plaid it matters twice over: the check should sit square to the front edge, and only a true drawing lets the tailor place it. Trapezoid measurements lists each number to send.

Buyer questions: backrests alone, very long nooks, clipped shapes
- A common question
Can I order only a backrest, or just the bolsters?
The workshop's answerYes, backrests and round bolsters are sold on their own. One buyer ordered two 4 in (10 cm) thick backrests, 7 x 63.75 in (18 x 162 cm) and 7 x 56 in (18 x 142 cm), with shipping included. A zippered backrest is possible as long as it isn't tufted.
- A common question
My nook is very long. Can you make a single cushion for the whole thing?
The workshop's answerVery long cushions are split into pieces. A 32.5 x 197 in (83 x 500 cm) nook cushion in beige velvet with black piping was made in 3 pieces, and a 100 in (254 cm) back cushion could be split in two as well.
- A common question
Can you make a clipped trapezoid in a fabric from a different listing?
The workshop's answerYes. Order through the trapezoid listing with every dimension, and write the fabric codes from the other listing in the personalization note, for example main fabric P-60 with piping in P-61.
A plaid bench cushion this lively needs no throw pillows; repeat its warmest thread in rattan above the bench and let the check carry the room.

Questions buyers ask next
Should a plaid bench cushion have throw pillows on it?
Usually not. A lively check already gives the eye plenty to do, and pillows in other patterns start an argument. If you want one, choose a solid in the plaid's quietest color, such as olive or brown, and keep it to a single lumbar.
What wall colors go with an orange plaid cushion?
Blues first, because blue sits opposite orange and makes it glow: dusty blue, washed denim and slate all work. Warm whites are the safe second choice. Avoid a wall in the same orange, where the check loses its edge.
Does self piping suit a checked fabric?
Yes. Self piping lets the check run over the border without a solid band cutting the pattern. A contrast welt frames a plaid like a picture, which suits some rooms, but it can make a long bench look busy.
