What size corner floor cushion should I get, and can it be bigger or thicker?

Also asked as:What size would you recommend for our corner?39 x 39 in (1 x 1 m) will be too large for our space

A corner cushion is measured along its two straight sides, the way you'd measure a slice of pie from the point. Get those sides right and the rest follows.

The quick answer

Choose a corner floor cushion by the length of its two straight sides: 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) suits two toddlers around 3, and 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm) makes a roomier nook. Tufted versions are 4 in (10 cm) thick by default, with 5 in, 6 in or more to order; plush and kids' corner versions run 8 in (20 cm).

Why the sides are called the radius

A corner floor cushion is a quarter circle. Its two straight sides run along the walls and meet in the corner, and the round edge faces the room. Those straight sides are what we measure, and in the trade that length is the radius.

So when you want a 48 in (122 cm) radius, you choose 48 x 48 in. Size and price both follow the sides. Each step up in size, and each step up in thickness, costs more, and anything custom is quoted on its own.

Photos fool the eye, my friend. One buyer was sure the listing showed 36 in and 48 in cushions; they were 46 x 46 in (117 x 117 cm) in smoke gray and 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm) in emerald green. Mark the size on your floor with tape before you trust any picture, as the beige gingham one in our reading corner was.

The kids' floor sofas and corner floor cushions show the whole family. The quarter-circle sizing Pattern walks through the tape, and the floor cushion thickness Pattern helps with depth. Buy the cushion once, cry once. Who will be sitting in your corner?

Before you settle on a side length

  • Mark the size on the floor with tape, out from the corner along both walls.
  • Two toddlers around 3 years old: 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm).
  • Room too tight for 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm)? 31.5 x 31.5 in (80 x 80 cm) can be made.
  • For a grown-up reading corner, the largest 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm).
  • Want a deeper sit on the tufted version? Ask for 5 in or 6 in instead of the standard 4 in.
  • Custom sizes and thicknesses are quoted one by one, and the price follows both.

Corner floor cushions are measured along their two straight sides, not the curve, and the tufted ones are built 4 in thick unless you ask for more.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What size kids' corner floor sofa should I get? Can it be smaller than 39 x 39 in (1 x 1 m)?

    The workshop's answer

    It depends on your space. The best-selling size is about 39 x 39 x 8 in (100 x 100 x 20 cm), and smaller custom sizes such as 31.5 x 31.5 in (80 x 80 cm) can be made.

  2. A common question

How is a corner nook cushion priced, and which size fits two toddlers?

    The workshop's answer

Corner nook cushions are priced by radius, 40 in or 48 in, and you order the 48 in radius by choosing 48 x 48 in. For two 3-year-olds the workshop suggested 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm).

  3. A common question

What sizes are the corner floor cushions in your photos?

    The workshop's answer

    The smoke-gray one is 46 x 46 in (117 x 117 cm) and the emerald green one is 40 x 40 in (102 x 102 cm). A 60 in (152 cm) cushion made 10-12 in (25-30 cm) thick was also quoted, individually.

  4. A common question

Can the corner floor cushion be made bigger and thicker?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The default is 4 in (10 cm). With 46 in (117 cm) sides it was quoted at 5 in (13 cm) and at 6 in (15 cm), each thickness step raising the price.

  5. A common question

Can you make a floor cushion to fit a particular spot, like a kids' play tent?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send your measurements and the workshop quotes a made-to-fit cushion, such as 30 x 30 in (76 x 76 cm) for a play tent or 40 x 48 in (102 x 122 cm) for standard pallets. Ask for the current production time in writing with that quote, my friend.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a corner floor cushion measured along the curve or the straight sides?

Along the two straight sides that meet in the corner. That length, called the radius, sets both the size and the price. A 48 in (122 cm) radius is ordered as 48 x 48 in, and the curved front edge follows from it.

Which corner cushions are thicker than 4 inches as standard?

The plush corner cushion and the kids' corner floor sofa are both 8 in (20 cm) thick as made. The tufted corner cushion starts at 4 in (10 cm) and can be ordered at 5 in or 6 in, or quoted thicker on large sizes.

How do I check a size in my room before ordering?

Mark it on the floor. Run tape out from the corner along both walls to the side length you are weighing, then sit inside the lines with whoever will use it. Trust the tape over the listing photos, which show 46 in and 40 in sides.
