A Reading by NateBay Window Cushions
A teal bay window seat cushion, read layer by layer, with the cat still on it
Outdoor cloth, indoor seat, one tabby who never asked permission. Here is what each side of that line lends the other.
SaveThe quick answer
A bay window seat cushion in a sunny, pet-shared bay works best in a tight outdoor-grade acrylic weave in a mid-tone like petrol teal. The weave is made to hold its color in strong light and brushes clean of hair, while a box edge and a full-length fit keep it looking like living-room furniture. Send a photo of the seat with the measurements.
The cushion, cut open
Cover fabric. A removable, zippered cover. Machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Piping. A fabric-covered cord sewn into the seams. It sits on the seam line, so it does not change the size.
Fiber wrap. Polyester fiber (Dacron) batting around the foam: it fills the cover out and softens the edges.
Foam core. About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, firm to medium-firm, cut to the ordered size.
Zipper. Along the back band, as hidden as possible. The zipper side faces down or toward the wall.
Base panel. The underside of the cover. A non-slip fabric backing can cover the whole of it instead.
Pinned by Nate: five points on the paneled bay
Five pins, from the spot the tabby chose to the pale tulips that keep the teal the only loud color in the room.

- sleeping tabby cat
A tight outdoor-grade weave copes better with a napping cat than a loose pile.
- teal box cushion
The cushion runs the full seat so the white joinery frames it like a mount.
- cream knitted throw
A throw over the end adds softness against the crisp paneling.
- tulips on the sill
Pale tulips keep the one strong color on the cushion.
- open book
A book left mid-page makes the bay feel like a daily reading seat.

Cross-section of a bay seat: four layers and a cat
The cushion in this bay is a full-length rectangle, box-edged, self-piped, and it stops square at both ends of the paneled seat. That is the engineering. The cat is the load test.
Read it top to bottom. Layer one is the tabby: warm, unscheduled weight, always in the same sunny spot. Layer two is the cloth, a petrol teal outdoor acrylic with a tight weave, so hair and dust have little to grab. Layer three is the fill inside the box edge, which has to keep its corners through daily naps and reading. Layer four is the white joinery, which frames the cushion the way a mat frames a print.
The piping is teal on teal. It draws the top edge without adding a second line of color, which matters in a room that is otherwise white paneling and herringbone oak.
Now color against light. This is cool northern daylight, the honest kind. Petrol teal is a mid-tone, so it hides tabby hair better than near-black or cream would. The cream knitted throw over the end, the open book and the white-and-pink tulips in a stoneware vase all stay quiet so the cushion carries the one strong color. The stack of coffee-table books on the sill and the bicycle on the cobbles outside say this is a daily seat by a lived-in window, not a showroom.
Measure twice; the fabric remembers. If your seat is not a plain rectangle, the bay window calculator takes your lengths and angles. Other shapes live in bay window cushions, and cat-friendly builds in pet-friendly cushions.
What the bay borrows from the patio, and what it keeps from the living room
| Decision | Borrowed from outdoors | Kept from indoors |
|---|---|---|
| Cloth | Tight acrylic weave made for strong sun | A calm solid with a soft hand |
| Color | Mid-tone that forgives hair and dust | One strong color, everything else neutral |
| Edge | Box edge that holds a crisp line | Self piping instead of a contrast welt |
| Care | Brush off hair, spot clean, move on | Styled with a throw, a book and flowers |
A 27 x 74 in bay, quoted from one photo
A buyer got in touch with a photo of her bay window seat and the numbers in millimeters, which came to about 27 x 74 in (685 x 1880 mm). The workshop looked at the photo before it confirmed the quote, because a bay can hide an angle that two numbers never show.
She wanted the linen from a listing photo, with dark green piping. Rather than describe the green in words, the workshop showed her its dark green linen, code L-25, so she could see the actual piping cloth before anything was cut.
Two lessons, partner. Send a photo of the real seat with the measurements written on it, and name the piping by its code, not by an adjective. Is your bay a clean rectangle, or does one end lean in?
Buyer questions: tiny swatches, screen color and velvet pile
- A common question
The swatches in the listing are tiny. Can you send bigger pictures so I can see the texture of a fabric like L-02?
The workshop's answerYes. Name the fabric codes you are weighing and the workshop photographs larger pieces of each. If you want to touch the cloth, physical samples can be mailed as long as you cover the shipping. A drawing of your seat with its sizes also helps the workshop quote exactly.
- A common question
The color I received doesn't look like the chart. My olive brown looks like plain brown. Was the right fabric used?
The workshop's answerIn that case the workshop first checked that the exact fabric code went into the order, then explained that indoor light and screens change how a color reads, and asked for photos taken in daylight. For the reorder it sent physical samples at no charge and real photos of the cloth, and offered a discount on the new order. It advised against sending the cushions back, since return shipping would have cost more than the cushions.
- A common question
Is your deep navy velvet a performance polyester or cotton? Matte or shiny? Short pile or long?
The workshop's answerIt is a polyester-blend velvet with a little more sheen than a matte finish, and a short, tight pile that feels smooth and soft rather than shaggy.

Send the numbers in inches: length × depth × thickness, plus any angle. The workshop checks them with you, because foam has no undo button. — Nate

If a cat naps on your bay window seat cushion, choose a tight outdoor-grade weave in a mid-tone like petrol teal. Very dark or very pale covers show hair first.

Questions buyers ask next
Can outdoor fabric be used for an indoor window seat cushion?
Yes. An outdoor-grade acrylic weave works indoors, and a sunny bay is where it earns its place, because it is made to hold its color in strong light. Choose a solid mid-tone and a box edge so it still reads as living-room furniture.
Which cushion colors hide cat hair on a window seat?
Mid-tones such as petrol teal, sage or taupe. Near-black covers show pale hair, and cream or white covers show dark hair and paw marks. A tight weave matters as much as the color, because a loose pile holds hair in its fibers.
Should a bay window seat cushion run the full length of the seat?
On a paneled bay with boxed-in ends, yes. A cushion that runs the full seat and stops square at each end lets the joinery frame it. Measure wall to wall at the front and at the back, since older bays are rarely exact.
What should I send to get an accurate bay window cushion quote?
A photo of the actual seat, the measurements in one unit, and the fabric and piping codes you like. The workshop confirms the quote against the shape it sees in the photo, and codes take the guessing out of color.
