A Reading by CallumBench Cushions
A pinstripe dining bench cushion on a teak terrace, made for the dinner that runs late
Callum starts with what buyers ask about odd benches and piping, then reads a covered terrace where the chairs are tied down and the bench cushion holds its own.
SaveThe quick answer
For long dinners on an outdoor bench, a full box cushion 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) thick in water-repellent fabric is kinder than a thin pad, as long as knees still clear the table. Tie the light chair pads; let the heavier bench cushion sit on its own. On a storage bench, split the cushion where the lid splits.
Three buyer questions before we sit down
- A common question
The size calculator only asks for width and length. How do I order a trapezoid window seat cushion?
The workshop's answerEnter the maximum width and length so the listing can price it, then write the exact shape in the personalization or order-notes box: long side, short side, depth and both angled sides. One real example was 86 5/8 in (220 cm) on the long side, 42 7/8 in (109 cm) on the short side, 24 in (61 cm) deep, with 31 1/2 in (80 cm) angled sides. The shop can also send photos of trapezoid cushions it has made.
- A common question
Could the piping be a different color from the cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. Piping can be cut from any color in the fabric charts, or from the same fabric as the body. Buyers have paired mustard velvet with olive piping, cream linen with coffee, and dark red with dark green.
- A common question
What is the best way to send measurements for an L-shaped or oddly shaped bench?
The workshop's answerPhotos plus a hand-drawn sketch with every dimension written on it. If a photo or file is hard to read, the shop asks for the sizes drawn by hand, and for complex pieces it sends back its own measurement drawing for you to confirm before production starts.
Now, the reading
A 120-inch bench that opens in three places
A buyer messaged the workshop about a storage bench of about 120 x 21 1/2 in (305 x 55 cm). Its lid lifts in three sections, and two of them are oddly shaped. The shop asked the right question first: one cushion, or three?
It laid out the trade honestly. Three pieces cost more, because each one needs its own cutting, its own sewing and its own zipper. One piece costs less, but it pins every lid shut.
The buyer chose three, matched to the lids, so the storage still opens without clearing the seat. Then came good news. In that size, 4 in (10 cm) cost the same as 3 in (8 cm), so they went thicker. On a bench people sit on for long spells, that extra inch is worth taking, friend.
If your bench has hinges, find where the lid breaks before you measure anything else. The storage bench guide shows how to split at the hinge.
Pinned by Callum: five marks on a covered terrace
Five pins, from the self-piped corner to the lavender that sets the gray in the stripe.

- Pinstripe bench cushion
A full box cushion with thin tan and gray pinstripes running back to front.
- Self-piped front corner
Self piping gives a crisp edge without breaking the pinstripe.
- Matching chair pad
The same fabric on the chair pads makes the whole dining set feel considered.
- Chair pad tie
Ties hold the chair pads while the heavier bench cushion stays put on its own.
- Lavender beyond
Gray-green lavender and hedges echo the gray in the stripe.

What a two-hour dinner asks of a bench cushion
Dinner outside rarely ends when the plates go. Somebody opens another bottle, the sky goes from gray to dark, and the bench takes the weight for another hour. That hour is what this cushion is built for.
It is a full box, not a flat pad. Box walls give the foam something to stand on, so the seat keeps its shape through a long sit instead of sagging where people lean in to talk. Self piping, cut from the same pinstripe, keeps the front edge crisp. A contrast cord would have chopped the stripes off at every corner.
The stripes run back to front. On a long dining bench cushion that matters. Stripes running the length make a bench look like a hall runner; running front to back, they mark out places to sit.
Across the table, the chair pads wear the same cloth, tied at the back posts. Chair pads are light and get dragged in and out all evening, so they need tying. The bench cushion is long and heavy and stays put on its own.
The cloth is a water-repellent membrane fabric, right for a terrace that is roofed but open at the sides. Rain doesn't negotiate, and a covered patio or porch still takes blown rain and heavy dew. The white ground keeps the teak looking rich. The gray in the stripe picks up the lavender and the clipped hedges beyond.
How long does your table stay set after the meal is done?
Four checks before a long evening outside
- Check thickness against the table. Seat plus cushion must leave knees clear of the table apron.
- Choose a box edge over a flat pad. Side walls hold the foam up for the second hour.
- Tie what moves. The chair pads get ties; the bench cushion does not need them.
- Order the bench cushion and the chair pads together, so every stripe runs the same way.

Leave your details and the workshop will call you to confirm measurements, fabric, foam and piping. No prices, dates or payment on this page: it is a request, not an order.
Tie the chair pads, not the bench. Chair pads get pulled in and out all meal; a long box cushion on a dining bench is heavy enough to stay put.

Questions buyers ask next
Is 4 inches too thick for an outdoor dining bench cushion?
Not usually, but check the table first. A 4 in (10 cm) box cushion is kinder over a long meal than a thin pad, yet it lifts the seat by nearly that much. If knees start meeting the table apron, drop to 3 in (8 cm).
Which way should the stripes run on a dining bench cushion?
Back to front, as on this terrace. Front-to-back stripes line up with each diner's place and keep the bench from reading as one long runner. Order the chair pads from the same fabric at the same time so every seat matches.
Why are the chair pads tied down but the bench cushion isn't?
Chair pads are small and light and shift every time a chair moves, so ties at the back posts hold them. A long box cushion on a bench carries enough weight to stay in place, which keeps its front edge clean.
Can cushions on a covered terrace stay out in the rain?
A water-repellent cloth sheds light rain and dew, which a covered terrace still gets. Water-repellent is not the same as waterproof, so move the cushions under full cover in a storm and let them dry before stacking them away.
