The Cutting Table · compared on the table
Is one long cushion cheaper than several separate pieces?
Also asked as:One cushion or three separate?Price if they were two separate cushions?
Close to a wash. Price follows the surface you cover, not the number of zippers. Here is what real split quotes did.
SaveThe quick answer
One long cushion and several separate pieces usually cost about the same, because price follows the total surface. Separate pieces add cutting, sewing and zippers, yet real split quotes came out equal or slightly cheaper: a window seat split in two stayed the same, a long banquette split in three was about 6% less. Cushions around 108 in (274 cm) long are made in two pieces anyway.

Five real splits and what the price did
| The job | The split | What the price did |
|---|---|---|
| Storage bench, about 120 x 21.5 in (305 x 55 cm) | Three pieces | Listed a little above one piece, then offered lower as a set |
| Piped velvet banquette, 140 x 16 in (356 x 41 cm) | Three: 36, 68 and 36 in long (91, 173 and 91 cm) | About 6% cheaper |
| Window seat | Two pieces | Exactly the same |
| Velvet daybed, 74 x 36 x 6 in (188 x 91 x 15 cm) | Two 36.5 in (93 cm) squares, same area | About 20% below one piece |
| Velvet floor cushion, 108 x 40 in (274 x 102 cm) | Two 54 x 40 in (137 x 102 cm) halves | Made in two pieces anyway |

Why the surface sets the price, mostly
Price mainly follows the total surface. Cut one bench cushion into three and you still cover the same bench, so fabric and foam hardly change. What does change is labor: every extra piece means more cutting, more sewing and another zipper.
That is why the answers have pointed both ways, and two real quotes came out cheaper split. Weather on the water is like that too, friend: read the day in front of you, not last week's forecast.
So ask for both options in one quote. Around 108 in (274 cm) and up, a cushion is made in two pieces regardless. The one piece or two Pattern covers where the joint goes, and bench cushions shows both kinds. How long is your bench, wall to wall?

Buyer questions
- A common question
Is one cushion in the full shape cheaper than three separate ones?
The workshop's answerSeparate pieces take extra cutting, sewing and zippers, so three cushions for a storage bench of about 120 x 21.5 in listed slightly above one piece. The three were then offered as a set at a lower price, and 4 in instead of 3 in didn't change it.
- A common question
Would splitting one very long cushion into three save anything?
The workshop's answerSlightly. A 140 x 16 in piped velvet cushion, split into 36 x 17, 68 x 16.5 and 36 x 17 in pieces, came out about 6% cheaper than the single piece.
- A common question
Two smaller daybed cushions or one big one: which costs less?
The workshop's answerPrice follows surface area. Two 36.5 x 36.5 x 6 in velvet cushions came in about 20% below a single 74 x 36 x 6 in cushion covering the same area.
- A common question
Can you make one floor cushion 108 in long?
The workshop's answerLong cushions are made in two pieces. A 108 x 40 in velvet cushion was made as two 54 x 40 in cushions.
- A common question
Does splitting it into two change the price?
The workshop's answerNo. The total size is the same, so the price stays the same.
Questions buyers ask next
Does going from 3 in to 4 in thick raise a split set's price?
Not on the storage-bench set in the table: choosing 4 in (10 cm) instead of 3 in (8 cm) left the price unchanged. Within 2 to 5 in, length and width drive the price far more than thickness does.
Is there a set discount when a bench cushion is split into several pieces?
Often, yes: multi-piece orders have been offered a set price below the listed pieces added together, and the three-piece storage bench was offered that way. Ask for the set figure alongside the one-piece quote.
Will a split with angled ends cost more than a straight split?
Angled sides and rounded corners take much longer to cut and sew, so they are priced like trapezoids, and one window seat cost about twice a similar rectangle. A simple notch or cut-out, by contrast, has cost nothing extra.
