The Cutting Table · a common question

How much does a custom cushion cost if my sizes are in centimeters?

Also asked as:Price for a custom 19¾ in (50 cm) x 63 in (160 cm)?Quote for 110¾ in (281 cm) x 39¼ in (100 cm)?

Some folks measure in inches, some in centimeters, and one of my neighbors measured her swing in hand-spans. The price only cares about the size.

The quick answer

A custom cushion measured in centimeters is priced exactly like one measured in inches: pick the size range on the listing that covers your measurements and the price appears, or send the sizes for a quote. Quotes are in US dollars, and the workshop confirms shipping cost with each one. Thickness moves the price most at the extremes, so give length, depth and thickness together.

A duck-egg cushion takes the chill off a stone bench. Velvet like this is for carrying out on a fine afternoon, not for leaving out in the rain.

From a metric tape to a price

  1. Measure all three numbers

Length, depth and thickness, all in centimeters. Don't mix units in one note.

  2. Find the size range that covers them

The listing shows the price as soon as you pick it.

  3. Or send the sizes for a quote

Quotes come in US dollars, with the shipping cost for your address in the same message.

  4. Add the extras to the same quote

A non-slip base under a long bench cushion, or a pair of bolsters with a floor cushion.

Thickness is the quiet price-setter

Folks expect length to drive the price, and it does. The surprise is thickness. One footprint, 40 x 21 in (101 x 53 cm), was quoted at 2 in (5 cm) thick; the same footprint at 20 in (50 cm) would have cost more than four times as much. So put all three numbers in your first message, neighbor, and the quote you get back will match the cushion you want.

The quote checklist lists what else to send, the measurements Pattern keeps depth and thickness straight, and the bench cushion builder lets you try proportions before you ask. More finished pieces live in bench cushions. What does your bench measure, in whichever unit your tape speaks?

The same 40 x 21 in cushion cost more than four times as much at 20 in thick as at 2 in; thickness drives a custom cushion quote.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Can you quote a price for my custom rectangular cushion?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes, and the same price shows on the listing when you select the size range. A 40 x 21 x 2 in (101 x 53 x 5 cm) cushion was quoted that way, and a 133 x 22 x 2 in (337 x 56 x 5 cm) bench with a non-slip base came already discounted.

  2. A common question

    What would a metric cushion cost, say 19¾ x 63 in (50 x 160 cm) or 69 x 23½ in (175 x 60 cm)?

    The workshop's answer

Metric sizes are quoted the same way as inches, and the workshop confirms shipping cost with each quote. Quotes have covered 63 x 20 in (160 x 50 cm) in linen, a 69 x 23 1/2 in (175 x 60 cm) bench, a 39 1/2 x 21 in (100 x 54 cm) box-top cushion, and a velvet floor cushion with two bolsters added.

  3. A common question

What if my exact size is bigger than the size option I paid for?

    The workshop's answer

Small gaps of about 3 to 5 inches are absorbed. Bigger ones are settled with a top-up payment link before production starts, or you add a second order, reorder in the right range, or keep the standard size.

  4. A common question

Why does an angled or rounded-corner cushion cost more than a rectangle?

    The workshop's answer

Labor, not fabric. Angled sides and rounded corners take much longer to cut and sew, so they're priced like trapezoids; one window seat cost about twice a similar rectangle. A simple notch or cut-out adds far less labor.

Questions buyers ask next

Do I need to convert centimeters to inches before asking for a price?

No. Metric sizes go through the same size ranges as inch sizes, and quotes have been given straight from centimeters, like 69 x 23½ in (175 x 60 cm). Just keep all three numbers in one unit.

Is shipping added on top of a custom cushion quote?

It depends on the quote. Quotes are given in US dollars, and the workshop confirms the shipping cost for your address with each one, so check that line before you pay.

Can a non-slip base or bolsters go on a metric quote?

Yes. A 133 x 22 in (337 x 56 cm) bench cushion was quoted with a non-slip base, and a 42 x 37 1/2 in (107 x 95 cm) velvet floor cushion was quoted with a pair of bolsters.
