Cream bouclé on a cream storage bench: a one-cushion makeover

A painted storage chest under a tall window, and one cream cushion that makes it a seat. My friends, this is the quietest makeover I know.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion for a storage chest should be cut flush with the lid so it lifts cleanly, and kept moderately thin so the paneling below still shows. Cream bouclé on a cream chest makes a quiet makeover: the looped texture catches window light and replaces pillows, and a zip-off cover makes a pale fabric easier to live with.

Before, a chest. After, a seat.

Before the cushion, this is furniture you put things in: a cream paneled storage bench under a tall window, with a lid and a habit of collecting sweaters. After the cushion, it is a place to sit with coffee and watch morning come through the sheers.

The eye sits down first, and here it sits on texture, not color. The bouclé is cream on a cream chest, so there is no contrast to speak of. Instead, the loops of the pile catch window light on the top face, a soft glitter no flat weave gives you. Where the sun lands, the cream warms toward butter; in the shadow of the window frame it cools to oyster. Self piping keeps the edge in the same cream, so light is the only line.

Then proportion. The cushion is kept moderately thin and cut exactly to the chest, so the paneling still shows and the lid lifts without catching.

Every accent is natural and has a job. The olive tree is the only green, and it keeps an all-cream bedroom from going sleepy. The ginger jar on the sill is a single ceramic note, and the wicker basket warms the pale herringbone oak. What piece in your house is one cushion away from being a seat?

The stripes that ran the other way

An interior designer in the US ordered a bench cushion 32 x 57.5 in (81 x 146 cm) and 4 in (10 cm) thick, in a black-and-white stripe of 98% cotton with piping, and asked for the stripes to run side to side.

They arrived running front to back. The workshop explained: with that fabric's roll width, running the stripes side to side would have forced seams across the top. The designer agreed that a seamless top made the better cushion.

A stripe is a direction as much as a color. Decide it before the cut, with the stripe direction guide in hand, or choose a plain bouclé, as here, and the question never comes up.

The lesson: Check stripe direction against the roll width before cutting a long cushion.

On a long striped bench cushion, the fabric's roll width decides the stripe direction: running the stripes side to side can put a seam across the top.

Buyer questions: sizes, angles and sets

  1. A common question

My bench needs a size that isn't in the drop-down. What do I do?

    The workshop's answer

Pick the size range your measurements fall into; the drop-down only sets the price. Write your exact size, such as 67.5 x 20 in, with thickness and fabric code in Add Personalization, and that is what gets made. Unsure? Message your measurements.

  2. A common question

My bay window seat has angled ends. How do I order a cushion for it?

    The workshop's answer

Order it as a trapezoid, on the trapezoid order page, not the rectangle one. Upload a drawing with every edge measured plus a photo of the seat; a hand sketch is fine. An angled shape ordered as a rectangle is cancelled and refunded so you can reorder.

  3. A common question

Are your prices fixed, or can I get a quote for a set?

    The workshop's answer

Single cushions are priced by size range; choosing your size shows the price. Sets get a custom quote, often below the total of the singles, with a purchase link made for you. Trapezoids are priced by size range too.

Questions buyers ask next

Will a storage bench lid still open with a cushion on top?

Yes, when the cushion is cut flush with the chest, as here. Measure the lid edge to edge; a cushion that overhangs can catch on the wall or window frame as the lid lifts.

Is a cream bouclé cushion hard to keep clean?

Easier than it looks. Covers close with a hidden zipper, so a pale bouclé can come off for a gentle wash, the first thing most buyers of pale fabrics ask about.

Does a plain bench cushion need throw pillows to look finished?

Not always. With bouclé, the looped pile is the decoration, so a bench under a window can stay bare and still look complete. Pillows earn their place beside a flat fabric.
