The Cutting Table · a common question
My cushion arrived flat and thin. How long until it expands?
Also asked as:It looked folded, flattened and rolled up.It won't bounce back.
It left the workshop full and came out of the box looking like a folded sail. Give it air and a little time before you judge it.
The quick answer
Most vacuum-packed cushions regain their full shape within 24-48 hours of opening. Allow 48-72 hours, and up to 3-5 days, before you judge one, since tightly compressed foam can arrive flat, thin or folded. Pulling, shaking and kneading with both hands speeds recovery. If a piece still hasn't filled out after that, send the workshop photos with a tape measure across the thickness.

The recovery clock after you cut the plastic
| Time since opening | What you'll see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0-24 hours | Flat, thin, maybe folded or creased | Unpack fully, lay it flat, work it with both hands |
| 24-48 hours | Most cushions back to full shape | Pull and shake any slow corners |
| 48-72 hours | Firmer pieces catching up | Knead again; pull side to side if it looks small |
| 3-5 days | The fair point to judge | Still flat? Photos or a video to the workshop |
Helping a flat cushion breathe
Keep blades away from the fabric
The cushion sits right against the plastic. Snip the bag's edge well away from the cushion and tear it open by hand.
Pull, shake, knead
Work the cushion with both hands. A handmade piece that looks small straight out of the vacuum comes back to size when pulled gently side to side.
Leave the tufting cord alone
A loose cord by a button is the anchoring rope, not a stray thread. Tuck it back under the button.
Judge on day three, not hour one
Allow 48-72 hours, up to 3-5 days, before deciding anything.
When a cushion still hasn't filled out
Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does compressed foam. It comes back on its own schedule. Most bench and floor cushions are full within a day or two. If one still looks thin after 3-5 days, send the workshop photos or a short video of the piece that won't recover, with a tape measure held against its thickness.
If it looks like only a cover arrived, open it up, friend. The foam is vacuum-compressed inside, and every order is photographed before it ships. The first days are laid out in the first 72 hours with a vacuum-packed cushion, long seat cushions live under bench cushions, and the glossary explains foam recovery.
How many hours has yours been out of the plastic?
Most vacuum-packed cushions are back to full shape 24-48 hours after opening; judge one only after 3-5 days.

Buyer questions
- A common question
My cushion came flat and misshapen. Will it come back?
The workshop's answerUsually, yes. Cushions are tightly vacuum-packed, so they often arrive flattened, and they generally regain full shape within 24-48 hours. For a cushion opened that same day, the advice was to wait 3-5 days, then send photos or a video if it hadn't recovered.
- A common question
My cushions look thinner than I expected after unpacking. Will they fill out?
The workshop's answerYes. Vacuum-packed cushions become fuller over time once they are opened. If they still look thin, send photos.
- A common question
There's a loose cord near one of the buttons. Is the cushion coming apart?
The workshop's answerNo. That cord is the button's anchoring rope, not a thread, and it tucks back under the button. The cushion itself needs time and a good pull with both hands to recover from vacuum compression.
- A common question
I only received a cover. Where is the foam?
The workshop's answerAlmost certainly inside. Inserts are vacuum-compressed within their covers, so the cushion can look like a cover alone. Open it and it expands within a few days. Every order is photographed before shipping, and the workshop investigates if foam is truly missing.
Questions buyers ask next
Why do cushions ship vacuum-packed at all?
For shipping. The air is pulled out so the cushion travels small and tight, which is why it arrives flat, thin or even folded. Once the bag is open, the foam draws air back in and regains its shape over the following days.
Does a large order arrive in one box?
Not always. Large orders ship as several separately tracked parcels that often arrive on different days. Check every tracking number before assuming something is missing; if a piece truly is, message the workshop with the tracking numbers and keep its written reply.
What if my cushion is still flat after five days?
Send the workshop photos or a short video, with a tape measure held against the thickness. In past cases, seat cushions that never fully expanded were replaced. Until you hear back, keep pulling, shaking and kneading it, since compressed foam recovers faster when it is worked.
