A thin-stripe custom bench cushion by the grill, and what indoor benches can borrow

Outdoor kitchens teach fast: grease, rain, sun and a cook who wants company. Here's what I'd carry indoors from this teak bench, and what I'd leave outside.

A deep striped cushion turns a short teak bench into a seat for whoever keeps the cook company. The thin stripes pick up the oak cupboard, the herbs and the terracotta pot.

The quick answer

A custom bench cushion beside an outdoor grill works best thick, boxed and covered in outdoor acrylic, with a thin multicolor stripe that forgives splashes. Borrow two outdoor habits for indoor benches: a pattern that hides daily wear, and ties placed clear of any hardware. Keep cotton and velvet covers for indoor seats.

Field notes from a teak bench

Overcast day, friend. Best light there is for reading a cushion, because nothing hides in the glare.

Here's the setup. A short teak bench on gray porcelain paving, against a white rendered wall, between a built-in stainless gas grill and an oak outdoor-kitchen cupboard. On the bench sits one thick custom bench cushion in outdoor acrylic.

The bench is short and deep, so the cushion went thick with a tall boxed side. That gives it the presence of a small ottoman. It's a perch for whoever keeps the cook company, not a lounger.

The cover is a white ground with thin stripes, and every stripe has a job. Navy for the shadows under the counter. Rust for the terracotta pot of rosemary at the far side. Mustard for the oak cupboard door. Sage and teal for the herbs. White keeps it light against the pale render. The grill's stainless finish is why a clean, graphic stripe won over a rustic print: steel likes straight lines. Self piping keeps the edge quiet.

On the wall, a stainless fork, spatula and tongs hang on a hook rail, which keeps the worktop clear and the bench free to sit on. One plant in shot, the rosemary, tucked in the corner, so the stripe stays the story.

Now the lesson. Outdoors forces good habits: a pattern that forgives, a cushion that earns its place, a fabric chosen for the worst day, because rain doesn't negotiate. Most of that works indoors too. More ideas live on the patio and porch cushions page. What's the worst day your bench sees: rain, grease or grandkids?

Pinned by Callum: five fittings around the grill

Five pins mark the hanging barbecue tools, the built-in grill, the rosemary pot, the thin multicolor stripe and the deep boxed edge.

  1. Hanging BBQ tools

Steel tools on the wall keep the worktop clear, so the bench can double as a seat.

  2. Built-in grill

The grill's stainless finish is why a clean, graphic stripe was chosen over a rustic print.

  3. Rosemary pot

The terracotta pot repeats the rust stripe at the far side of the frame.

  4. Thin multicolour stripe

Several colors on white let the cushion work with the oak, the steel and the herbs at once.

  5. Deep boxed edge

A thicker cushion turns a short teak bench into a comfortable perch next to the cook.

Four hinges on a 77 in quilt box

A returning buyer in the US, happy with an earlier patio swing cushion, came back with a long wooden quilt box: 77 in (196 cm), hinged lid. Lids are tricky. Ties in the wrong place tangle in the hinges, and a loose cushion slides the moment you lift the lid.

The workshop added ties on the hinge side only. That's normally a small extra charge; this time it was free. She sent the four hinge positions: 8 5/8, 29, 48 and 68 1/4 in (22, 74, 122 and 173 cm). The workshop came back with three questions: which end she'd measured from, a few photos, and how wide each hinge was, so every tie would line up clear of the hardware.

That's a sailmaker's habit: mark the fittings before you cut the canvas. For any hinged lid, record hinge positions from a named end. Our Pattern on storage bench cushions covers the rest.

Buyer questions: trapezoids, hook-and-loop and backrest thickness

  1. A common question

Do you make trapezoid-shaped cushions to measure?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send every side length, including the long side. For a trapezoid with an 89 in (226 cm) long side, the workshop asked whether two pieces would be acceptable, and quoted it as one piece when the buyer needed that.

  2. A common question

Could you add a hook-and-loop tab to the back cushion so it fastens to a wooden backboard?

    The workshop's answer

Hook-and-loop tabs aren't something the workshop makes. It offers fabric ties on the corners of the back cushion instead, which tie around the wooden back piece to hold the cushion in place.

  3. A common question

How thick is the wall backrest cushion on the floor sofa?

    The workshop's answer

4 in (10 cm) as standard. It can be made to a custom thickness, for example 4 3/4 in (12 cm).

Give an outdoor bench cushion one stripe color for every material near it: rust for the terracotta pot, mustard for the oak, navy for the shadows.

Questions buyers ask next

How thick should a cushion be on a short outdoor bench?

Thicker than you might expect if the bench is short and deep. A tall boxed side gives a small bench the presence of an ottoman and makes a proper perch. Check that knees still clear any counter or table nearby before you settle the thickness.

Can outdoor acrylic go on an indoor kitchen bench?

Yes, and it's a sensible borrow for a bench that sees spills. The trade-off is feel: outdoor acrylic is usually crisper in the hand than cotton or velvet. The reverse doesn't work, since indoor cotton doesn't belong on an exposed patio.

Why a multicolor stripe instead of a solid next to a grill?

A plain white shows every splash, and a single dark color has nothing to tie it to the materials around it. A thin multicolor stripe on a light ground breaks up small marks and lets you pull one color from each nearby material.
