A navy and sage striped garden bench cushion, read in gray weather
Gray sky, gray stone, gray-green olive leaves. That is exactly the weather a navy stripe was made for, and the buyer questions go first, because they ask what this bench would ask.
SaveThe quick answer
A navy and sage striped garden bench cushion works on weathered teak because the navy anchors the silver-gray wood while the sage repeats the olive leaves and lavender foliage around it. A solid navy side band keeps the stripe from looking busy, and in overcast light the cool palette reads fresh instead of dull.
Three questions a garden bench would ask
- A common questionpets
Is your linen a performance fabric? I have a dog or two that jump on the bench.
The workshop's answerThe linen is a natural-look fabric. For homes with dogs or cats, the workshop suggests its pet-friendly collection instead: it stands up much better to claws, jumping and everyday pet wear, and it is easier to clean. It is also the one to choose for a bay window where the dog likes to lie. No fabric is fully claw-proof, but that one holds up far better.
- A common questionnon-slip
Do you offer a non-slip bottom for bench cushions? Is it a separate mat?
The workshop's answerYes, on any bench cushion. Write 'non-slip base' in the personalization box with your size and fabric code. It is not a separate piece: the underside of the cover itself is made from non-slip fabric. If you change your mind, it can come off the order before production starts.
- A common questionfoam
Is the back cushion the same foam as the seat, and how thick will it be?
The workshop's answerNo. The seat uses firm foam of about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), while back cushions are filled with shredded foam or fiber, so they are softer to lean on. Because they are filled pillows, they have no fixed thickness and come out about 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm), so you only give width and height.
Now, the reading
Navy for the wood, sage for the leaves
Start with the wood. That teak has gone silver the way teak does after a few seasons out in the weather, and silver is a cold color. Put a warm tan cushion on it and the bench looks tired. Navy does the opposite. It is darker than the wood, so the gray weathering reads as a finish, not neglect.
The top panel is an outdoor stripe of navy, sage, cream and a thread of teal, running lengthways along the slats so your eye travels the whole bench. The side band is a solid navy weave. That two-fabric trick slims a thick bench cushion and makes it look tailored, and a pale gray cord marks the seam between them. Contrasting side bands are a normal order.
Now the light. It is overcast, the honest light. No sun to bleach the cream, no hard shadow to swallow the navy. Sage and lavender sit at the same cool temperature, so nothing fights. The olive-green lumbar pillow repeats the leaves overhead, and the willow basket of cut lavender with a pair of pruning shears at the bench foot says this is a working garden, where somebody sits down between chores.
One ordering note. On long striped cushions the default runs front to back, so if you want the stripes lengthways like these, write it in the order note. The stripe direction notes explain why. What color has your outdoor wood weathered to, friend?

Five spots where the colors do the work.

- lengthways stripes
Stripes following the slats draw the eye along the whole bench.
- solid navy side band
A plain navy boxing strip makes a striped cushion look slimmer and tailored.
- sage lumbar pillow
Sage repeats the olive leaves overhead.
- basket of lavender
Cut lavender and secateurs turn the scene into a working garden.
- lavender border
Purple next to sage and navy keeps the palette cool and fresh.

A 77-inch quilt box with four hinges
A buyer in the US came back to the workshop after an earlier patio swing cushion had served her well. This time it was a long wooden quilt box with a hinged lid, 77 in (196 cm) long, and she wanted the cushion tied on the hinge side only. The shop added those ties at no extra charge.
Ties on a hinged lid have to miss the hardware, so she sent the four hinge positions: 8 5/8, 29, 48 and 68 1/4 in. The workshop wrote back with two questions. Which end did you measure from? And how wide is each hinge? It asked for photos too. A number without its starting point is a guess holding a tape measure.
- Sizes
- 77 in long; hinges at 8 5/8, 29, 48 and 68 1/4 in
- Fabric
- Outdoor fabric
The lesson: For hinged lids, record hinge positions from a named end so the ties clear the hardware. More in storage bench cushions.
Before you tie a cushion to a hinged lid
- Name the end you measured from: left or right, standing in front of the box.
- Give every hinge position from that end, and the width of each hinge.
- Say which side gets ties: the hinge side only, or all four corners.
- Photograph the lid open and closed, with the tape measure in the shot.
- Add a non-slip base if the lid is slick; it is part of the cover, not a mat.
On a hinged storage bench, give each hinge position from one named end, so the cushion ties clear the hardware when the lid opens.

Questions buyers ask next
Can a cushion have a different fabric on the side band?
Yes. Contrasting side bands are possible, like the solid navy boxing on this bench. Two-tone top and bottom faces are not recommended, because the zipper then shows.
Can I choose my own stripe colors?
No. A woven stripe comes in its own fixed colorway, because the colors are woven in. Change the look with the side band and the piping instead, which is how this bench got its navy edge.
Can garden bench cushions stay outside all winter?
Better not. The outdoor cloth is water-repellent and UV-resistant, but the foam is not quick-dry and there is no mesh drain bottom. Store the cushions indoors for the off-season and they will last longer.
Can the non-slip base go in the washing machine?
No. The white non-slip panel should stay out of the washer and the dryer, where it shrinks. Wipe it clean instead; the rest of the cover washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle.
