The Cutting Table · a common question

Which of your linens are beige or greige rather than gray?

Also asked as:Is it more gray than beige? Can you send larger images of the linen colors?

Neutrals are the quiet ones on a swatch card, and the quiet ones are the hardest to read. Here is how the linen chart sorts itself, warm to cool.

The quick answer

For beige or greige rather than gray, look at L-02, L-03 and L-04: L-02 is a cream, light beige, L-03 a light warm greige and L-04 a touch warmer. L27 is a grayish beige for a gray-sand look, and L-11 leans slightly cooler. Screens shift subtle neutrals, so order samples, up to 5 codes per order, before matching upholstery.

Why L-04 won't sit still

Linen is honest cloth, my friend, but a phone camera is a poor witness. One reply from the workshop called L-04 a touch warmer than L-02 and L-03. In a set of close-up photos taken for another buyer, L-04 sat beside L-30 on the grayer side. Same cloth, different light at the moment the picture was taken.

That is why the workshop says plainly that its phone photos aren't taken with a professional camera. Screens shift subtle neutrals; the screen versus daylight Pattern explains why, and metamerism has its own glossary line.

Buy the cushion once, cry once. For a banquette cushion that has to live beside existing upholstery, a sample is the honest step. What are you matching: a sofa, a chenille chair, or painted paneling?

A real project

The light warm gray already in the room

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop wanting a linen to match a light warm gray, somewhere between greige and khaki, that was already in the room. The workshop named three candidates from the linen range: L-03, the light warm greige; L-02, cream and light beige; and L-11 if the buyer wanted to lean a hair cooler. When a khaki chenille was the thing to match, L-02 and L-03 were the two suggested. Then came the advice I'd give at my own table: order the physical samples, up to 5 codes on one order, before buying the cushion.

Reading a neutral before you order

  • Shortlist by description first: L-02 and L-03 for warm, L27 for gray-sand, L-11 for a cooler dove.
  • Ask for close-up phone photos of each code on your list.
  • Ask for those photos next to white paper, so your eye has something fixed to judge against.
  • Order samples, up to 5 codes per order; the swatch Pattern shows how to judge them.
  • Hold each sample against your upholstery by a window, in daylight, not under a lamp.

L-02 reads cream beige, L-03 a light warm greige and L27 a grayish beige; order up to 5 linen samples before matching upholstery.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

Which of your linens lean beige or greige instead of gray?

    The workshop's answer

Start with L-02, L-03 and L-04. L-02 leans cream and light beige, L-03 sits in greige territory, and L-04 is a touch warmer.

  2. A common question

I'm matching a light warm gray, almost khaki, that I already own. Which linen comes closest?

    The workshop's answer

L-03 (light warm greige) and L-02 (cream, light beige) are closest, with L-11 if you want it a little cooler. L-02 and L-03 were also suggested for a khaki chenille. Screens shift subtle tones, so order physical samples first, up to 5 codes per order.

  3. A common question

The swatches are tiny. Can I see bigger photos of the oatmeal, flax and greige linens?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, close-up phone photos of any code are sent on request. In one set, L-04 and L-30 looked grayer while L-02 and L-07 were lighter and warmer. The photos aren't taken with a professional camera, so lighting can shift the tone; you can ask for them next to white paper.

  4. A common question

Is linen L27 more gray or more beige?

    The workshop's answer

L27 is a grayish beige. The workshop recommended it to a buyer who wanted a gray-sand linen, and offered a clearer photo the next day.

  5. A common question

Will the linen look the same in my room as on my screen?

    The workshop's answer

Small differences are normal, because screens and daylight change how color reads. Ask for real-life photos, confirm from a photo of the actual fabric before production, or order a swatch and check it in your own room.

Questions buyers ask next

What does greige mean on a linen chart?

Greige sits between gray and beige: a neutral with enough warmth that it doesn't read cold. On this linen chart, L-03 is the light warm greige, with L-02 on the creamier side and L27 on the grayer side.

How many linen samples can go on one order?

Up to 5 codes per sample order. For a neutral match, a useful five runs from L-02 (cream, light beige) through L-03, L-04 and L27 to L-11, the slightly cooler dove gray.

Why was L-04 described two different ways?

One reply called L-04 a touch warmer than L-02 and L-03; in one set of phone close-ups it looked grayer, next to L-30. The light at the moment of the photo is the likely reason, which is why a sample seen in daylight settles it.
