A Reading by CallumBench Cushions
A blush striped bench cushion that turns a balcony storage bench into a sofa
Callum reads a blush and white stripe, two dusty rose pillows and a dark storage bench for the long hours: coffee, a paperback, a slow afternoon over the rooftops.
The quick answer
A custom bench cushion makes a balcony storage bench comfortable for long sitting when the seat lifts off and the back comes from loose pillows. Here a blush and white stripe in a water-repellent membrane fabric covers the lid, and two dusty rose knife-edge pillows lean on the railing ledge. The pillows come indoors when rain threatens; the seat lifts off for the storage.
Pinned by Callum: five points on a narrow balcony
Five pins, from the geraniums that carry the color to the stripe that wraps down over the box edge.
The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Why a stripe this pale on a bench this dark
A dark storage bench on a narrow balcony can swallow the whole corner. Put a pale cushion on it and the corner opens up again.
That is the first job of this blush and white stripe. The second is comfort for long sitting: a morning coffee that turns into a second cup, a paperback, an hour watching weather come in over the rooftops.
The seat is a box-edge custom bench cushion with self piping, and the stripe wraps over the front boxing down to the lid. Nothing is fixed. The seat lifts off whenever somebody needs what's stored inside, which is how a storage bench should be dressed.
The back is not a backrest at all. Two soft knife-edge pillows in dusty rose lean on the railing ledge and fill the length of the bench. For lingering, that beats a fixed back on a balcony. Pillows go where a spine wants them, and they come indoors in one armful when the sky turns.
Geraniums carry the color so the cushions don't have to
Red geraniums in the balcony box and terracotta pots on the ledge hold the loudest color in the frame. The cushions stay a step quieter. Dusty rose picks up the warm clay, and blush picks up the dusty rose. It is an overcast-day palette that will still look easy under a hard noon sun.
The black wrought iron railing gives the only hard line. The tiled roofs beyond are what the seat faces, and that is the point: a bench for looking out, not in. Other small outdoor corners are drawn in balcony corner bench cushions.
The cloth is a water-repellent membrane fabric. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. A passing shower beads off. A night of rain on an open balcony is another matter, so the pillows come in and the seat goes under cover. The Pattern on water-repellent vs waterproof cushions explains the whole system.

The 94-inch cushion that measured 91 out of the box
A buyer in the US ordered a 16 x 94 in (41 x 239 cm) cushion for a long window bench. It arrived vacuum packed, and straight out of the plastic it measured 15.5 x 91 in.
The workshop explained that a compressed cushion takes 3 to 4 days to fully expand. After 5 days this one had grown, but only to 91.75 in. The buyer laid a tape measure along it and sent a photo, and the workshop remade the cushion at 16 x 94 in and let the buyer keep the first one.
Two lessons there, friend. Give a vacuum-packed cushion its days before you judge it. If it is still short after that, photograph the tape against it. A cushion you sit on for hours needs every inch it was ordered with.
Buyer questions: seats, backs and sizes that don't match
- A common question
Can the same bench cushions double as backrests, so I get matching seats and backs?
The workshop's answerYes. One set combined three seat cushions of about 30.5 x 13 x 3 in (77.25 x 33 x 8 cm) with three backrests of about 30.5 x 10.25 x 3 in (77.25 x 26 x 8 cm), all in velvet, in a single custom order.
- A common question
What if the size I picked at checkout is quite different from the size I actually need?
The workshop's answerA gap of 3 to 5 in is absorbed without fuss. A big gap is different: one buyer selected 91 in but needed 109 in, nearly 20 in more, and that takes more material and labor, so the workshop asked for an additional payment before cutting.
- A common question
What comes in the French-style tufted bench set, and which size works as a bed for someone 5 ft 9 in tall?
The workshop's answerThe set arrives fully filled: one base cushion, one back cushion and two end cushions for the arms. For sleeping, someone 5 ft 9 in should choose the 30 x 73 in (76 x 185 cm) size.
A vacuum-packed bench cushion needs 3 to 4 days to reach full size, so measure it after that, with the tape measure in the photo.

Questions buyers ask next
Is a balcony storage bench comfortable enough for an hour of reading?
It can be, with a proper box-edge cushion on the lid and loose pillows behind. Pillows move to wherever a back needs them, and on a narrow balcony they are easier to carry indoors than a fixed backrest.
Should the cushion on a balcony storage bench be tied to the lid?
Usually not. A separate lift-off seat lets the lid open without a fight. If the cushion creeps when someone sits down, a non-slip base is the gentler fix, and it keeps the lid free.
Can a water-repellent bench cushion stay out overnight on an open balcony?
A water-repellent membrane fabric sheds a shower, but it is not waterproof. When a night of rain is forecast, bring the pillows in and move the seat under cover so the foam inside stays dry.
How long should a vacuum-packed bench cushion rest before it is measured?
Give it 3 to 4 days to recover. If it is still short after that, lay a tape measure along it and photograph the reading. One buyer's 94 in cushion still measured 91.75 in after 5 days and was remade.
