Aqua stripe and seafoam on silvered teak: the color story of an outdoor bench cushion
Gray wood, pale stone, shade most of the day. Callum reads why an aqua stripe sits quietly here, and how two soft pillows give a backless bench a back.
The quick answer
An aqua and white striped outdoor bench cushion looks settled on silvered, unoiled teak because weathered wood and limestone are cool in tone, so the aqua reads calm rather than loud. Seafoam knife-edge lumbar pillows leaned on the wall give a backless bench a back, and one warm note, such as a terracotta pot, balances the palette.
Pinned by Callum: stripe, pillows and the one warm pot
Four pins: the two seafoam pillows against the render, the striped seat, and the olive in its clay pot at the end of the bench.
The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Why aqua sits quiet on gray wood
Teak left out long enough turns silver. That gray is cool, and so is the limestone render behind it and the worn stone flags underfoot. Put aqua and white on a cool base and the stripe settles in like sea against a harbor wall. Put the same stripe on new, honey-oiled teak and it shouts.
The courtyard sits in shade most of the day, and shade runs blue. It pulls the aqua toward seafoam and keeps the white from glaring. In hard noon sun the same cloth would look brighter and thinner.
The stripe runs front to back across the seat and carries on down the boxing, so the front edge shows the same rhythm as the top. Self piping keeps that edge crisp without adding a new color.
The bench has no back rail, so the two seafoam pillows lean straight on the wall. They are knife-edge on purpose: two panels sewn together, soft enough to squash into the gap between seat and render. Rigid box backs would stand off the wall and tip. Seafoam is one step lighter and greener than the aqua, so the pillows read as family, not a match.
Then the warm note: a terracotta pot with an olive tree at the end of the seat. One clay color, one gray-green leaf. Without it, the palette would run cold.
The cloth comes from the water-repellent membrane family. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract, so read the water-repellent vs waterproof Pattern before a wet season, and size pillows in the pillow cover studio. If your wood has gone gray, friend, go cool with the fabric. What color is the wall behind your bench?

- Limestone#D8CFBCRender and flags. Pale, never stark.

A 48-inch square and two yards of matching cloth
A buyer in the US wanted a square cushion, 48 x 48 in (122 x 122 cm), for a home project. It was quoted at 3 in (8 cm) thick; she later moved to 4 in (10 cm).
She ordered samples of three beige linens, liked what came in the mail, and then did the smart thing: she bought a little over 2 yards (2 m) of the same fabric to upholster a matching piece herself.
That is color thinking at room scale. A cushion that matches nothing looks bought; one that repeats across two pieces looks planned. Samples first, then yardage, then the cut. The fabric yardage calculator does the arithmetic.
On the cutting table: the courtyard bench
| Piece | Outdoor bench cushion with a box edge |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Aqua and white stripe, water-repellent membrane |
| Stripe direction | Front to back, carried down the boxing |
| Piping | Self piping on seat and pillows |
| Back support | Two seafoam knife-edge lumbar pillows against the wall |
| Base wood | Silvered, unoiled teak |
| Warm accent | Olive tree in a terracotta pot |
| Best for | Shaded patios and courtyards with cool stone |

Buyer questions: odd bays, sizes and true colors
- A common question
My bay window seat is not a rectangle and not symmetrical. Can you still make a cushion?
The workshop's answerYes. The workshop makes any size and shape. The easiest route is to draw the seat outline on paper with every side measured and send a photo, or to trace the seat onto a butcher-paper template. The shop may ask for a few extra measurements before it quotes.
- A common question
How is a custom-size window seat cushion priced?
The workshop's answerQuotes depend on size and fabric, and the shop adds your size to the listing as its own option. Recent quotes covered a 23 x 76 in seat in emerald velvet, a 31 x 63 in seat, and a pair at 46 x 22 in and 69 x 21.5 in. Two cushions in one order can be in different colors.
- A common question
Do you have a photo of a finished cushion in my exact fabric and piping?
The workshop's answerOften there is no finished cushion in that exact pairing, so the shop photographs the fabrics side by side, for example a green with two candidate piping colors, and sends extra shots in different light. Whole-cushion photos are not always available, so physical samples are the safest way to judge a color for your room.
An aqua stripe cushion settles on silvered teak and pale limestone because gray wood is cool; the same stripe on fresh honey-oiled teak shouts.

Questions buyers ask next
Which cushion colors suit weathered, silver-gray teak?
Cool colors: aqua, seafoam, soft white, gray-greens. Silvered teak and pale stone are cool in tone, so cool fabrics look settled there. Save warm stripes for new, oiled teak, and add one warm pot or pillow for balance.
Should back pillows on a backless bench be knife-edge or box-edge?
Knife-edge. Two panels sewn together make a soft pillow that squashes into the gap between seat and wall. A rigid box pillow stands off the wall and tips forward when someone leans back.
Does shade change how an outdoor fabric color looks?
Yes. Shade is bluer than direct sun, so it cools colors and softens whites, while hard noon sun makes the same cloth look brighter and thinner. Check samples in the spot where the bench actually sits.
