An aqua stripe bench cushion and the hand-finishing that holds it square
Wide stripes, two plain backs, one teak bench on stone. Weather will test all of it, and the finishing is what passes.

The quick answer
A striped outdoor bench cushion looks tailored when the stripes run front to back and drop down the boxing as straight bands. Pair the stripe with solid back cushions cut from the same aqua family, box-cut and piped so they stand square against the rail. Splitting the back in two at the center halves the weight you carry in.
Stripes that go over the edge
The first thing I check on any striped outdoor bench cushion is the front edge. Here the aqua and white awning stripes run front to back, then turn down over the boxing as clean vertical bands. Nothing wanders at the corner. That takes a cutter who lines up each band before the boxing is sewn, and it is why a plain courtyard bench looks deeper than it is.
The two seafoam backs are the quiet half of the job. They are box-cut and piped in their own color, so they stand up against the teak rail instead of slumping. The color comes out of the stripe family, not from a new swatch. Pick a fresh shade and the bench starts to look like a rented deckchair.
The light is cool and overcast, the kind that tells the truth about color. Aqua holds its own against gray granite. The potted olive sits softly beside the seafoam, and the teak warms the cold palette from underneath. What does the back rail on your bench look like?
The cloth for this weather is the water-repellent membrane. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. See water-repellent vs waterproof cushions, stripe direction on cushions, and more builds in patio and porch cushions and bench cushions.
Swatch strip: one courtyard, six colors
- Awning aqua#4FB3BFThe loud one. It gets the seat and nothing else.
- Stripe white#F3F2ECThe breathing room between the aqua bands.
- Seafoam#9ED2C6Pulled from the stripe family for the two box backs.
- Teak#9B6A3FWarm wood under a cool palette.
- Olive leaf#8C9A80Gray-green from the potted tree, a soft neighbor for seafoam.
- Granite gray#8E8E8ACool paving that makes the aqua look cleaner.

Two edges nobody labeled
A buyer sent the workshop a sketch of a trapezoid window bench: front, depth and one slanted side, with two edges left blank. The shop filled them in instead of guessing quietly. It assumed the slanted sides matched, worked out the window edge at 32 1/4 in (82 cm), and asked the buyer to confirm.
The buyer measured again and corrected it to 30 3/4 in (78 cm). Before anyone picked up shears, the shop sent the whole list back: front 86 1/4 in (219 cm), window edge 30 3/4 in (78 cm), depth 28 3/4 in (73 cm), slanted sides about 40 in (101.5 cm), 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, one fabric for the body and a second for the piping.
The buyer had taped those slanted sides at 39 3/8 in (100 cm). The math said about 40 in. That gap is ordinary hand-measuring tolerance, and it is why numbers get read back before cutting. Hand-finishing starts before the first cut. Label every edge, friend. The trapezoid cushion calculator runs the same check.
Buyer questions: cut-outs, tight fits and a matching back
- A common question
My bench has a small cut-out at one end. Can I just send you a drawing and get a quote?
The workshop's answerYes. Cut-outs are made from your own plan. One buyer sent a drawing for a light blue cushion of about 84.9 x 25.4 in (216 x 64.5 cm) with a cut-out, got a quote from it, and then settled the exact blue from the color chart.
- A common question
My entryway bench is boxed in on three sides and I measured it with a laser. What size do I write so the cushion actually fits?
The workshop's answerRound down slightly. A laser reading of about 24 1/4 x 76 3/4 in (61.7 x 195.1 cm) was ordered as 24¼ x 76¾ in (61.5 x 195 cm). Handmade cushions vary by a small margin, not enough to cause a fitting problem here, and each one is checked against its size before shipping so it doesn't come out larger.
- A common question
Could you make a thinner matching cushion to fix on the wall as a backrest, or sell me the fabric so I can?
The workshop's answerBoth. A matching back cushion of 59 x 15 3/8 in (150 x 39 cm), 2 in thick, was made in the same corduroy, and a 1 in thick, 59 x 11 3/4 in (150 x 30 cm) version without piping was also quoted. Extra fabric can be sold by length.

On a striped outdoor bench cushion, run the stripes front to back so they drop down the boxing as straight bands, and cut the backs from a solid in the stripe's own color.

Questions buyers ask next
Should awning stripes on a patio bench run front to back or side to side?
Front to back, for most benches. The stripes then continue down the front boxing as vertical bands, which makes the seat look deeper. Side-to-side stripes make a long bench look longer instead, which rarely helps on a patio.
Should back cushions repeat the stripe or be a solid color?
A solid pulled from the stripe keeps the bench calm. Two stripes stacked seat over back read busy, and a brand-new shade looks like a mistake. On this courtyard bench the backs are seafoam from the same family as the aqua stripe.
Why are the back cushions box-cut instead of soft pillows?
A box-cut back with piping has straight sides and a flat face, so it stands upright against a bench rail. A loose pillow shape slumps forward as soon as someone leans on it.
What should a drawing include when a bench is not a plain rectangle?
Every edge, labeled: front, back, depth and each slanted side, plus the thickness. If one is missing, the shop works it out and asks you to confirm before cutting, as it did for an 86 1/4 in (219 cm) trapezoid bench.
