  1. Tan self piping

The matching cord keeps the edge sharp in raking sun without adding another color.

  2. Slatted oak sides

A modest cushion depth lets the vertical slats show, so the bench doesn't look top-heavy.

  3. Books stored below

Leather spines repeat the brown of the mug and rug border, tying floor and seat together.

  4. Steaming mug

Set at the back edge, it hints at where you'd sit without cluttering the seat.

  5. Cornflower jug on sill

The same arrangement repeats across this set, so the cushion color is the only variable.

A tan bouclé bench cushion on slatted oak, kept slim for company

A bench is the seat that stretches when people arrive. This one is tan, slim and quiet, and the oak still shows.

The quick answer

For a bench that seats guests, a custom bench cushion should be slim enough to show the frame and cut to the bench's exact length, not rounded. Here, tan bouclé with self piping keeps one clean outline in low sun. For two benches, put both sizes in one order and ask for the piping in the same fabric.

Five pins on the plate

Five pins, from the tan piping at the front edge to the books kept under the seat.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

What the photograph is doing

Low sun crosses a plaster wall under a white casement window. Below it, an oak bench with slatted sides and one tan bouclé cushion.

The cushion is slim. That is the first decision, and the right one. The slats are the bench's joinery; a thick pad would hide them and make the bench heavy on top.

The piping is self piping, tan on tan. Raking light already gives bouclé its texture, so a second color at the edge would be noise.

The props are few. Dried wheat and cornflowers in a stoneware jug on the sill. A mug at the back edge, where a person would sit. Four leather-bound books under the bench, their browns repeating the mug and the rug's border. Floor and seat are tied together without one extra pillow.

Seating more people, well

A bench is a host's seat. It does not count chairs. When guests arrive, it takes one more.

  • One height. A slim cushion keeps everyone level, shoulder to shoulder. Height is a feeling.
  • A clear top. The mug sits at the back edge; the books live below. Pillows take the places people need.
  • The pair together. Two benches of different lengths go in one cart, one order, one fabric.

More shapes are in bench cushions, the cloth in bouclé and teddy fabrics, the numbers in the bench measuring guide. How many people does your bench hold on a busy evening?

A slim seat. A clear top. Room for one more.

A real project

Two benches, then a third cushion

A buyer in the US had two benches, one 77 x 16.75 in (196 x 43 cm) and one 44 x 15.5 in (112 x 39 cm). She asked for photos of a linen fabric laid beside several velvets, then chose the linen with a piping picked from those photos. Both cushions took 5 to 7 days to make and 3 to 5 to arrive.

She came back for a third: 20 x 78 in (51 x 198 cm), dark gray corduroy, dusty pink piping. Again she asked to see the two fabrics side by side first.

A photo of two fabrics touching says more than a color name.

A bench cushion on a slatted oak frame should stay slim: a thick pad hides the joinery and makes the whole bench look top-heavy.

Buyer questions: exact sizes, notches, one order

  1. A common question

Is my cushion made to the exact size I send, or rounded off by an inch? My window frame also sticks out a little.

    The workshop's answer

Exact. Cushions of 22 x 99.5 in and 22 x 98.5 in were made as written. For a frame that sits out about 3/4 in, send a photo and a drawing with the measurements, and a notch or angled edge is cut to it.

  2. A common question

I need two window bench cushions in different sizes. Is that two separate orders?

    The workshop's answer

No. Add both sizes to the cart in one order. Cushions of 17.75 x 59 x 3 in and 17.75 x 35 x 3 in, for example, were matched to the 18 x 59 in and 18 x 36 in options and ordered together.

  3. A common question

I want piping, but in the cushion's own fabric rather than a contrast color. How do I ask?

    The workshop's answer

Write “piping same color” with the fabric code in the personalization box, for example “piping same color N02”. The piping is then made from the main fabric.

Questions buyers ask next

Why keep a cushion slim on a bench with slatted sides?

The slats are part of the bench's design. A moderate cushion lets them show, so seat and frame read as one piece. A thick pad hides the joinery and makes an open frame look top-heavy.

What does self piping add to a textured bouclé cushion?

Self piping is a cord covered in the cushion's own fabric and sewn into the edge seam. It sharpens the outline without a second color, which suits a looped weave that already shows texture in side light.

My two benches are different lengths. Can they still match?

Measure each bench on its own and send both sizes. Each cushion is cut to its own numbers, so a 77 in bench and a 44 in bench can share one fabric and one piping in the same order.
