A charcoal bouclé bench cushion with twin geometric backs, and how it will age
Flat winter light, a walnut bench and one very practical charcoal. The questions come first; now let me show you how this set lives, spill by spill.
SaveThe quick answer
A charcoal bouclé bench cushion is one of the more forgiving choices for daily life: its dark, looped face hides crumbs and marks, though it holds pet hair and the loops can catch claws. Put the pattern on the back cushions, split a long back into two, and keep every cover zippered so it washes at 86°F (30°C).
Piping, backrests and a greige to match
- A common question
Do I add the piping to my measurements?
The workshop's answerNo. Give the bench's exact measurements, for example 48 x 21 in (122 x 53 cm). The cushion is always cut to your bench size, and the piping sits on the seams, so it doesn't change the size.
- A common question
Could the L-shaped backrest work on its own as a reading chair, and how big is it?
The workshop's answerThe L-shaped backrest is 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm). For a compact reading chair, the workshop pointed to its corduroy pouf chair instead. Backrests are sold alone too, for example two L-shaped ones to turn a twin daybed into a sofa, but the backrest is the top cushion only; the bars are sold separately.
- A common question
Which of your linens comes closest to a light warm gray, greige or khaki I already own?
The workshop's answerFor a light warm greige, the closest linen candidates were L-03 (light warm greige) and L-02 (cream to light beige), with L-11 if you want a touch cooler. L-02 and L-03 were also suggested against a khaki chenille. Screens shift subtle tones, so order physical samples, up to 5 codes per order, before you buy.
Now, the reading
The eye sits down on charcoal
Winter light through a tall casement window is flat and honest, and this custom bench cushion answers it with charcoal. Not black: a smoky, warm charcoal bouclé whose small loops catch the light and give the dark a soft grain. It is the texture everyone reaches for on the bouclé and teddy shelf.
Above it, two back cushions in a black-and-cream geometric, piped in black. That black cord is the thread that ties them to the seat, so three pieces read as one. And the backs come in two, not one long run of pattern. They echo the two panes behind them and turn a walnut bench into a small two-seater.
Now the room. Dried eucalyptus in a stoneware bottle is the only warm brown stem in a cool gray space. A faded rose runner brings blush to the dark oak floor. A stoneware mug and a short stack of hardbacks rest on the free end of the seat, so the bench doubles as a side table. The eye sits down first, my friends, and here it lands on the darkest thing in the room, which is exactly where you want the crumbs to land too. What is the darkest thing in your room?

Five places where the color and the everyday use meet.

- Twin back cushions
Two equal backs mirror the two window panes and are easier to handle than one long one.
- Charcoal bouclé seat
A dark seat grounds the busy pattern above it.
- Mug and books
Props on the seat's free end let the bench double as a side table.
- Dried eucalyptus
Brown stems add the only warm organic note in a cool room.
- Persian runner
Faded rose warms the gray palette at floor level.

Kids, dogs, coffee and a sunny window
| Daily test | Charcoal bouclé seat | Geometric back cushions |
|---|---|---|
| Crumbs and marks | The dark loops hide them between washes | The busy pattern disguises what lands on it |
| Pet hair and claws | Loops hold hair and can catch claws, rings and hook-and-loop; no fabric fully resists claws | Up off the seat, out of reach of most paws |
| Spilled coffee | Blot, then unzip: the cover washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air-dry | Two short covers unzip and wash more easily than one long one |
| Sun through the glass | Indoor fabric has limited UV resistance; rotate the cushion now and then | Swap the two backs end to end so they age alike |
Thirty inches the second tape found
A buyer in the US first ordered a bench set 98.5 in (250 cm) long, with backrests 24 in (61 cm) tall, in a burnt orange velvet. Then the tape came out a second time. The real bench measured 68 x 22.5 in (173 x 57 cm), with a back of 68.5 x 20 in (174 x 51 cm).
Thirty inches is not a rounding error. The workshop re-quoted the set and kept the length within 68 to 68.5 in, seat and back the same length, plus two side pillows. When a cushion must fit between walls, give the maximum length it may reach, and measure twice before anyone cuts. The bench measuring Pattern walks through it, and more sets live under bench cushions.
- Sizes
- Seat 68 x 22.5 in (173 x 57 cm); back 68.5 x 20 in (174 x 51 cm)
The lesson: Measure twice, and give a maximum length when a cushion must fit between walls.
When a bench cushion has to fit between two walls, send its maximum length, such as 68.5 in, and measure the bench twice before the fabric is cut.

Questions buyers ask next
Is bouclé a good bench fabric if I have a dog or a cat?
Bouclé hides marks and feels warm, but its loops hold pet hair and can catch claws, and no fabric fully resists claws. For a bench the dog shares, look at the tight pet-friendly weaves and keep bouclé for back cushions or quieter corners.
Can one bench set mix two fabrics and a contrast piping?
Yes. The seat and each back cushion are separate pieces, so each can take its own fabric code, and piping can use any code from any chart. Write every code in the order note, the main fabric and the piping separately.
How do I wash a bouclé cushion cover?
Unzip it, turn it inside out and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle with mild detergent and no bleach. Air-dry rather than tumble-dry. The insert itself is never washed. More in how to wash cushion covers.
Will a charcoal cushion fade beside a sunny window?
It can. Indoor fabrics have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun. Rotate the seat and swap the back cushions now and then so they age evenly; the fading Pattern has more habits that help.
