Slate blue velvet Hemnes daybed covers with mustard piping, and what keeps the set in place
A white Hemnes daybed dressed as a sofa in slate blue velvet. Nothing on it is tied down. The fit does the holding.
SaveThe quick answer
A Hemnes daybed cover stays in place because it is a fitted, zippered cover cut to the real mattress, not because of ties or a grip base. Send the length, width and thickness when you order. With two stacked mattresses, say whether you want one cover around both or one each; a single 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in cover fixed one tight fit.
Notebook, page one: slate blue velvet and one mustard piping line
The mustard line is the first thing to measure with your eye. It runs the whole front of the mattress, 79 in (201 cm) on one past Hemnes order, and it does not wobble once.
Everything else is slate blue velvet. In shade it reads gray. Where the window light reaches, it turns blue. Velvet pile does that, and it keeps a large piece of furniture quiet.
The warm color is rationed. Mustard appears in the contrast piping along the mattress and on the ends of two bolsters, and once more overhead, in the woven rattan pendant. Cool body, thin warm thread.
Each prop has a job. The kentia palm and the potted plants soften the white frame. The faded vintage rug carries blue and gold at low volume. The oak coffee table sits at seat height, with books, a mug and a small dish, which tells you this daybed works as a sofa every day.
Pinned by Hana: five marks on a slate blue daybed
Five pins, from the mustard-piped bolster to the oak table at seat height.

- Mustard-piped bolster
Mustard is the warm opposite of slate blue and picks up the rattan pendant.
- Mattress front piping
The mustard cord makes one long clean line that pulls the whole set together.
- Slate blue velvet back
A muted blue velvet looks gray in shade and blue in sun, easy to live with.
- Rattan pendant
Woven rattan overhead repeats the mustard trim in a natural material.
- Coffee table and mug
An oak table at seat height makes the daybed work as an everyday sofa.

Notebook, page two: nothing is tied, and nothing slides
People ask how a daybed set stays put. Ties? A non-slip base? On this set you see neither, and on a Hemnes you rarely need them.
- The mattress cover. A Hemnes daybed cover is a fitted cover, zippered and cut to the mattress length, width and thickness. The cover holds the foam. The frame holds the cover.
- The zipper. Every cover has one, on the back side, as hidden as it can be. Turn that side down and toward the wall.
- The back cushions. They stand on the seat and lean on the frame back. The frame is the fastening.
- The bolsters. They sit against the two ends, and the ends keep them there.
Ties earn their place on open benches and chairs, where nothing stops a cushion moving. The choices are laid out in ties or a non-slip base, and zipper sides in where the zipper goes.
The frame holds the cushions.
The cover holds the foam.
Your numbers hold the cover.
Notebook, page three: two covers where one was needed
A buyer in the US measured the two Hemnes mattresses stacked together: 9.5 in (24 cm) in total. The order was made as two separate covers. They were too tight, and neither would lie flat.
The fix was one cover, 31.5 x 79 x 9.5 in (80 x 201 x 24 cm), zipped around both mattresses at once. One cover, one clean line of piping along the front.
The measurement was right. One line of instruction was missing. When you give a stacked height, add it: one cover around both, or one cover each. The Hemnes cover measuring notes walk through the rest. How tall is your stack?

The lesson: When you give a stacked height, say whether you want one cover around both mattresses or one cover each.

Buyer questions: Hemnes fit, tall backs and a patio daybed
- A common question
Will your cover fit my IKEA Hemnes daybed?
The workshop's answerYes, the cover is designed for the Hemnes daybed. Mattresses vary, so send your mattress length, width and thickness with the order, and the cover is cut to those numbers.
- A common question
I have twin XL daybeds under windows. Can you make them look like sofas with tall back pillows?
The workshop's answerYes, as mattress covers with backrests. Send the overall mattress size, which was 38 x 80 x 10 in (97 x 203 x 25 cm) on that order. Back pillows can be made extra tall, such as 26 in (66 cm), to run the full mattress length against a window.
- A common question
Is there a waterproof fabric for a patio daybed, and is it priced higher?
The workshop's answerYes, for a small surcharge over standard fabric. One quote covered a 52 x 28 x 4 in (132 x 71 x 10 cm) set with a seat, two backrests and two armrests. At the time, the workshop had no finished photos in the outdoor fabric yet.
A Hemnes daybed cover needs one extra line when mattresses are stacked: one cover around both, or one each. A 9.5 in stack made as two covers would not lie flat.

Questions buyers ask next
Why is the piping mustard on a slate blue daybed?
Mustard is the warm opposite of slate blue. Used only in the piping and the bolster ends, it adds a thin line of warmth while the velvet body keeps the daybed calm. The rattan pendant repeats it in a natural fiber.
Do daybed back cushions need ties to stay upright?
Usually not on a frame with a back and two ends, like the Hemnes. The frame holds the back cushions and bolsters. Ties earn their place on open benches and chairs, where nothing stops a cushion from moving.
Does slate blue velvet look the same color all day?
No. Velvet pile catches light, so slate blue reads gray in shade and blue in sun. Look at a swatch in your own room in the morning and again in the evening before you decide.
What should I write when ordering a cover for stacked mattresses?
Write the combined height and say whether you want one cover around both mattresses or one cover each. A 9.5 in (24 cm) stack made as two separate covers came out too tight to lie flat.
