A forest green velvet Hemnes daybed cover that lets a narrow office breathe

Desk on one side. Daybed on the other. One green, one outline, and a narrow room holds two rooms without a wall.

Forest green velvet covers give a home office a daybed that works as a reading sofa by day and a guest bed at night. Oak furniture keeps the green warm.

The quick answer

An IKEA Hemnes daybed cover makes a small office feel generous when it recedes: one deep velvet, self piping, no contrast trim. A full set is a fitted mattress cover, two filled backrests and two filled bolsters, sized to the mattress's length, width and combined height. State the thickness, or the cover may be cut for two stacked mattresses.

Three questions before the reading

Daybed buyers ask the practical things first. So do I. The answers are the workshop's own.

  1. A common question

Can I buy just the backrests for an IKEA Hemnes daybed, without the base cover? What size are they?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, parts are sold on their own. Each backrest is 31 x 39 in, so two side by side cover the full 31 x 79 in daybed.

  2. A common question

I only need a zippered mattress cover for a twin or full daybed, no pillows. Can you do that?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Cover-only orders have been quoted for a twin at 8.5 in thick with piping and a full at 9 to 10 in thick with no pillows; ask for processing and delivery times in writing. Choose the mattress cover option and write your main and piping color codes.

  3. A common question

What measurements do you need for a custom daybed mattress cover?

    The workshop's answer

Length, width and thickness of the mattress, for example 79 x 31 1/2 x 8 5/8 in (200 x 80 x 22 cm). If no thickness is given, the workshop may assume a two-layer mattress and make the cover twice as thick, so always state it.

Now, the reading

Reading a narrow office

The room has two jobs. Work by day, a guest by night. The daybed faces the desk across a strip of floor, and that strip is the whole plan.

The velvet is forest green, deep enough to read as furniture rather than bedding. Self piping keeps one outline around every piece, so the eye counts one object instead of five. On a video call it stays quiet behind you.

The props are working props. An open laptop, a stack of gray notebooks, an oak desk that matches the shelf. The oak warms the green, and beige linen curtains soften the window without adding a color. Cool daylight falls across all of it, and nothing competes.

  1. Forest green velvet seat

Deep green velvet reads calm and focused, a good color for a room you work in.

  2. Self-piped bolster

Self piping keeps the velvet looking seamless on the round bolster ends.

  3. Velvet back cushion

Soft backs turn the daybed into a break-time sofa across from the desk.

  4. Laptop on the desk

Facing the daybed from the desk keeps the room useful for both work and guests.

  5. Notebooks on oak

Oak on the desk matches the shelf and warms the green.

Small-room habits worth copying

  • One fabric for the whole set: seat, backrests, bolsters and piping.
  • A deep natural tone already in the room. Here the green sits beside oak; elsewhere it might be walnut or slate.
  • Tall, soft backrests. Daybed sets use 19 3/4 in (50 cm) backrests, which turn a bed into a sofa for a coffee break.
  • Leave a hand's width of floor. Empty floor between the daybed and the desk chair is what makes the room feel wider.

Velvet has a directional pile, so it shades lighter and darker as the light moves. On deep green that shading reads as depth. What sits across from your daybed now?

The full set is under IKEA Hemnes daybed covers, the cloth under velvet, and the numbers in the Hemnes measuring guide.

A real project

A stain, a wait, and a better idea

A buyer waited through a busy season for a daybed set. When it came, one back cushion cover had a mildew-type stain. The replacement took longer still, because the fabric arrived from the mill defective and had to be reordered.

The buyer also sent an idea: a mattress cover in which each mattress is wrapped on its own and the two are joined by fabric, so the set unfolds flat onto the slats. A bed that opens like a book. In a small room, that is a good thought.

The lesson: Tell buyers early and specifically about delays; silence frustrates more than the delay itself.

A daybed in a home office should wear one fabric with self piping: a single outline reads as furniture, not a bed, on every video call.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a Hemnes cover set include the mattress?

No. A full set is one fitted mattress cover plus two filled backrests and two filled bolsters. The cover fits two stacked mattresses, and parts can be ordered separately.

Which parts of a velvet daybed set can go in the washing machine?

Only the seat cover. It unzips and washes inside out at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air dries. The filled backrests are not machine washable; spot clean them with a cloth.

How big are daybed bolsters?

Round bolsters are about 8 in (20 cm) across as standard, and 10 in is possible. Their length usually matches the seat depth or runs about 4 in shorter, and any size can be ordered.
