A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover, piped in burnt orange

A daybed is a bed that wants to be a sofa. One cloth and one line of color decide which it becomes.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover in one neutral velvet, with contrast piping, makes the daybed read as a sofa rather than a bed. Here cream velvet covers the mattress, two back cushions and two bolsters, and a burnt-orange welt taken from the rug outlines each piece. State your mattress depth, 6 in or 12 in, when you order.

Four deep velvets side by side. Only the forest green takes mustard; the other three share a cream cord that sharpens their outlines.

Four blues on the same set, each labeled with its body and piping code. The darker blues get camel trim; the lighter ones are paired with cream.

A red and cream stripe makes the set cottage-bright. On the bolsters the stripes wrap around in rings, while on the pillows they run front to back.

Four quiet neutrals with tone-on-tone trims: a shade darker on the pale fabrics, and cream on the slate gray.
Hemnes daybed set color grid in green, sage, olive and mint linen-look fabric with cream, taupe or sage pipingSave
Four greens with their suggested trims. Mint is the only one given a darker cord, sage green, instead of a pale one.

Pinned by Hana: five points on the daybed

Five pins, from the piped mattress edge to the faded rug the piping came from.

  1. Piped mattress cover

A single burnt-orange welt outlines the mattress so the daybed reads as a sofa.

  2. Bolster end panel

The round end is framed by the same welt, like a sofa arm.

  3. Back cushion

Upright back cushions in the same velvet turn the bed into seating.

  4. Second bolster

A bolster at each side rail keeps the set symmetrical.

  5. Terracotta rug

The piping color is lifted straight from the faded rug.

Reading the room

One cloth covers everything here: the mattress, two back cushions, two bolsters. Cream velvet. Because nothing changes fabric, the daybed reads as a sofa, not a bed.

A burnt-orange welt draws the outline. It runs along the mattress, frames each bolster end like a sofa arm, and edges the upright back cushions. The color comes from the faded terracotta in the rug below. Coordinated, not matched.

The bolsters lie against the side rails, one at each end. Symmetry keeps a long piece quiet. Above, a black-and-white dune photograph and a small botanical sprig print. An olive tree in a pot. A wooden side table with books. Sheer white curtains soften the daylight, so the pile glows evenly instead of flashing.

If your daybed serves both guests and lounging, keep the velvet neutral and take the piping from your rug or curtains. What in your room has already chosen the accent color?

The hand of cream velvet

  • The pile catches light. Cream looks paler where you sit and deeper in the folds.
  • Marks lift from a pile more readily than from a textured weave. Spot-clean first.
  • The covers come off, so the mattress cover can be washed without wrestling the foam.
  • Cream shows use sooner than a dark color. It suits lounging more than eating.
  • The darker welt takes the wear at the edges and hides it.
A real project

Six inches, not twelve

A buyer in the US ordered a custom cover for a Twin XL daybed mattress: 80 x 39 in (203 x 99 cm), 6 in (15 cm) deep.

The cover arrived sized for 12 in (30 cm).

The workshop had assumed a two-layer mattress, which is what most of its daybed buyers have. It made a replacement at 6 in and sent it. The buyer liked the quality and the color.

A thin mattress and a thick one make different daybeds. Height is a feeling. State the thickness plainly, and ask the maker to read it back to you. The size itself is defined under Twin XL.

Buyer questions: bolsters, tufting, other daybeds

  1. A common question

Could I have two rectangular pillows instead of the round bolsters in the Hemnes set?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Order the full set with two extra rectangular pillows in place of the bolsters, or order the back pillows and mattress cover on their own. Inserts are foam with adjustable firmness, and other fabric families, linen among them, can replace the default charts.

  2. A common question

Can you tuft a daybed cushion and add a round bolster? How long would it take?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, through the tufted cushion listing. One tufted daybed mattress, 75.9 x 35 x 4.5 in (193 x 89 x 11.4 cm), came with a round bolster 6.25 in (15.9 cm) across and 35 in (89 cm) long. Production plus delivery took about 10 to 12 business days.

  3. A common question

My daybed has a different shape from the one in your photos. Can you still make back and side pillows?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop confirmed the mattress size, 39.5 x 80.5 in (100 x 204.5 cm), and asked whether round or L-shaped backrests were wanted. Later backrests can be made in the same oyster white corduroy as the earlier mattress covers.

Questions buyers ask next

Is cream velvet practical on a daybed?

For lounging and guests, yes. Marks lift from the pile readily, and the covers come off for washing. Cream shows use sooner than a darker color, so keep meals and muddy paws to other seats where you can.

Why do the bolsters lie against the side rails?

At each end they act like sofa arms, framing the seat and keeping the long piece symmetrical. The piped round ends repeat the welt color, so they read as part of the set.

Does mattress thickness change the cover I order?

Yes. A cover sized for a 12 in (30 cm) two-layer mattress will bag and slide on a 6 in (15 cm) one. Measure the depth, state it in the order, and have it confirmed back to you.

Where should a daybed's piping color come from?

From something that stays in the room: a rug, curtains or wood. Here the burnt orange is lifted from the faded terracotta in the rug, which is why the set looks coordinated without matching.
