  1. Rust line on mattress

From this low angle the piping draws one long diagonal from arm to arm, which makes the daybed look longer.

  2. Piped bolster end

The piped circle on the bolster end repeats the mattress trim right at the arm.

  3. Cream back pillows

Two wide back pillows bring the seat forward to a comfortable sofa depth during the day.

  4. Ficus in woven basket

The basket's warm tan sits between cream and rust, so it links the plant to the trim.

  5. Faded vintage runner

The terracotta in this rug is exactly where the burnt-orange piping color comes from.

A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover with burnt-orange trim, set for guests

Five pieces, one frame, and a rug that chose the trim. This is a daybed arranged for company: people sitting upright in the evening, someone sleeping well at night.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover seats guests well when it is a full set: one fitted mattress cover, two back pillows and two bolsters. The back pillows bring the deep seat forward to sofa depth, and the bolsters mark the arms. Order the full set and the pillows and bolsters are sized from your mattress measurements automatically.

Pinned by Hana, from the arm

Five pins, read from a low seat at the arm: the trim line, the bolster end, the back pillows, the ficus and the rug.

The numbers match the pins on the plate.

Three seats, then one bed

The camera sits low, at the arm. From there the burnt-orange piping on the mattress cover becomes one long diagonal across all three drawers. The daybed looks longer than it is.

This is the full set. One fitted mattress cover. Two wide back pillows. Two bolsters. The pillows and bolsters are sized from the mattress, so each edge meets the next.

For hosting, the back pillows matter most. A Hemnes mattress is 31 1/2 in (80 cm) deep, far deeper than a sofa seat. Without pillows, guests perch on the front edge or lean on the wall with their legs out straight. Two firm back pillows bring the seat forward to sofa depth. Now people sit upright and talk. The bolsters mark the ends, so nobody slides into the arm.

Cream velvet keeps the white frame soft. The trim came from the room, not from a chart: the faded terracotta runner, the teak side table, the tan of the ficus basket. Pull your piping color from the oldest warm thing you own. More fits live under Hemnes daybed covers, and the pile is explained in velvet. The same set in greens, mint to olive, sits in the gallery beside this reading.

At night, lift the pillows off and stack them on the rug. Leave a hand's width of floor around them. How many people sit on your daybed on a full evening?

A sofa for the evening. A bed for the night. The same five pieces.

A real project

Two mattresses, one question

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a Hemnes daybed carrying two stacked mattresses, each 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm). Could both be covered?

The standard set is one mattress cover and two filled round backrests. For this buyer the workshop quoted two covers plus the two backrests.

Check this before you order. When the frame opens into a double for a guest, the lower mattress is on show too. Measure both, as in measuring a Hemnes daybed cover.

Buyer questions, on sets and sizes

  1. A common question

If I order the full Hemnes set, do I have to send sizes for the back pillows and bolsters?

    The workshop's answer

No. The back pillows and bolster armrests are included and made automatically from your mattress cover measurements. You can choose the mattress cover alone or the full set with backrest and armrest cushions; the price changes with the option.

  2. A common question

Could you make a skirted cover that just throws over the daybed mattress, with no zipper, so I can take it off every day?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The workshop agreed to an open-bottom cover with a skirt that covers the front and tucks between the mattress and the base, ordered through the daybed cover listing, for a 78 3/4 x 35 1/2 x 7 in (200 x 90 x 18 cm) daybed.

  3. A common question

Can you make a daybed or floor cushion in twin, twin XL or other mattress sizes?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. Real orders include a twin at 38 x 73 in (97 x 185 cm), a twin XL at 38 x 80 in (97 x 203 cm), a 55 x 55 in (140 x 140 cm) cushion for a loft bed and a 48 x 44 in (122 x 112 cm) velvet daybed cushion.

On a Hemnes daybed, two firm back pillows bring a 31 1/2 in deep mattress forward to sofa depth, so guests sit upright instead of perching on the edge.

Questions buyers ask next

Why add back pillows to a daybed used as a sofa?

A daybed mattress is much deeper than a sofa seat, so people either perch on the edge or lean far back. Back pillows fill that depth and bring the seat forward, which makes upright sitting comfortable through a long conversation.

What does burnt-orange piping do on a cream daybed cover?

It outlines each piece and draws one long line across the frame, which makes the daybed look longer. Taken from warm tones already in the room, such as a rug or a wooden table, it ties the cover to its surroundings.

Do I need covers for both mattresses on a pull-out Hemnes?

If the frame opens into a double for guests, the lower mattress shows, so a second cover keeps everything matching. The standard set covers one mattress; ask for two covers when you order.
