A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover, and the message that ordered it

Straight on, a daybed cannot hide anything. Neither can the order behind it.

A dead-center view that shows how cleanly the mattress cover fills the frame between the arms. The rug below repeats the terracotta trim in a bigger dose.

The quick answer

To order a Hemnes daybed cover set right the first time, send the mattress length, width and stacked thickness, the back length inside the frame, and both fabric codes, body and piping, in one message. A standard set is one zippered mattress cover and two filled backrests. Photos with the tape measure in the frame settle any doubt.

Five points where a front-on photograph shows the fit.

Pinned: Straight-on view of a cream velvet Hemnes daybed set with burnt-orange piping, olive tree in a basket and a terracotta rug
  1. Bolster at left arm

The bolster fills the corner between arm and back so nobody sits against bare wood.

  2. Right back pillow

Piping on the top edge keeps a straight skyline across both back pillows.

  3. Level seat edge

A smooth, level front edge with no pulling at the corners is how a well-fitted cover should look.

  4. Olive tree in basket

Silvery olive leaves soften the white frame and add a Mediterranean note.

  5. Terracotta medallion rug

The rug is the burnt-orange trim scaled up to floor size.

Read straight on

A front-on photograph is a fitting room. Nothing hides at an angle.

The Hemnes daybed cover sits level inside the white frame. The front edge is smooth. No pulling at the corners. The burnt-orange piping runs as one line from arm to arm, and on the two back pillows it draws a straight skyline.

The bolsters fill the corners between arm and back, so nobody leans on bare wood. Cream velvet takes the clear midday light evenly. The short pile shades a little as you move past it; that is velvet being velvet.

The props are few. An olive tree in a seagrass basket softens the white frame with silver leaves. A landscape print in oak and a botanical print in black give the wall two weights. A low oak shelf keeps books at knee height. The whole corner would sit as easily in any living room.

The terracotta medallion rug is the piping, scaled up to floor size. That idea is worth copying. If contrast trim makes you nervous, add one large thing in the same color family. Then the piping has something to answer to. How long is the back of your daybed, inside the frame?

Four lines for the first message

  1. Measure the mattress, not the frame

Length, width and thickness. Two stacked mattresses are measured together; the stacked-mattress Pattern shows how.

  2. Give the back length

Inside the frame, where the backrests will lean.

  3. Write both codes

Body and piping, spelled out separately in the note.

  4. Say what it sits on

A smooth top lets a cushion creep. A non-slip bottom is optional, at extra cost.

A real project

Backrests a little too long

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a daybed set. The mattress cover fit well. The backrests were slightly too long and bulged, and the round bolsters were less plump than in the photos.

The workshop explained that handmade, tufted pieces vary, and asked for a photo of a backrest with a tape measure on it. It offered replacement backrests at no charge. The buyer did not want replacements, so it settled on a partial refund.

A mattress has three numbers. A back has one more. Send all four.

The lesson: Measure the daybed's back length and give it to the maker. Backrests sized for a generic daybed may bulge on yours.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What exactly comes in the Hemnes daybed cover set?

    The workshop's answer

Two filled backrests and one zippered mattress cover.

  2. A common question

The cover I got is too small for my mattress. Can it be exchanged?

    The workshop's answer

The workshop makes a replacement cover. First it asks for photos of the tape measure on the length, width and depth, so the mistake isn't repeated. It warns that going oversized can make a cover look loose, but it follows your final measurements, for example 76 x 40 x 9 3/4 in (193 x 102 x 25 cm).

  3. A common question

My daybed top is smooth. Will the cushion have a non-slip bottom?

    The workshop's answer

Not as standard, but one can be added at extra cost; it was done for a 91 1/2 x 31 in (232 x 79 cm) daybed cushion. Anti-slip bases have also gone on outdoor seat cushions and been offered on banquettes to stop sliding.

Before ordering a Hemnes daybed cover, measure the mattress and the back length inside the frame; backrests sized for a generic daybed can bulge on yours.

Questions buyers ask next

Does a Hemnes daybed cover go on the mattress or the frame?

The mattress. The cover is made to the measured mattress, including its thickness, so measure that and not the wooden frame. If you stack two mattresses, measure them together; two stacked can reach about 9 3/4 in (25 cm).

Can a cream Hemnes cover have burnt-orange piping?

Yes. Piping can match the body or contrast with it, using any code from any chart, and it is included in the price. Write the body code and the piping code separately in the order note.

Why do tufted backrests vary in size?

They are filled and buttoned by hand, so each one settles a little differently. That is why the workshop asks for a photo with a tape measure when a backrest seems long, and why sending your back length first helps.

Are the filled Hemnes backrests machine washable?

No. On daybed sets only the zippered mattress cover goes in the machine, at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air dry. The filled backrests stay out of the washer; spot-clean them with a cloth and mild soap.
