A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover, and the room that changed around it

A letter about one chair taken away, four frames hung over the pillows, and a daybed that became the only seat.

Without the side chair, the daybed is the only seat in the room, and the gallery wall above it sets the width of the whole arrangement.

The quick answer

A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover can carry a whole room makeover if the daybed becomes the only seat. Take out the extra chair, hang art a little narrower than the back pillows and center it over them. Before you order, check that the thickness in your order matches your tape; in one order the two differed by about 1 in (2 cm).

To you,

A letter from Hana: before the chair left

You asked what changed in this room. Less than you think.

A side chair used to stand to the right. It came out. Now the white Hemnes daybed is the only seat, and the eye travels in one line: from four frames, down to two cream velvet back pillows, across to the bolster at the arm.

The frames span a little less than the pillows beneath them. That is the quiet rule. Art narrower than the backrest cushions, centered over them, ties wall and seat into one group. Hung wider, the frames would float.

The piping is burnt orange, a thin warm line around each deep back pillow. It holds their edge against the white paneled back. On the floor, a faded medallion rug carries terracotta and soft blue, so the orange has a partner below. The frames mix oak, white and black; a matched row would look stiff beside velvet.

Where the chair stood, a fiddle-leaf fig in a woven basket balances the right side. On the left, an oak and cane nightstand holds pampas in a stone vase, a candle, a mug and books. A black arc lamp reaches over the seat for evenings. Sheer curtains filter the daylight, and cream velvet takes that pale light softly.

If you are planning a Hemnes daybed cover, the Pattern on styling a daybed like a sofa shows how back pillows and bolsters line up.

What would leave your room if the daybed were its only seat?

A makeover rarely needs more. It needs one thing less. Then the cushion can speak.

Pinned by Hana: what stayed after the change

Each pin marks a piece that earned its place once the side chair was gone.

  1. Four-print gallery wall

The frames span a little less than the two back pillows, which ties the wall to the cushions below.

  2. Left back pillow

A deep back pillow with a piped perimeter holds its shape against the white paneled back.

  3. Bolster along the back

Laid lengthwise at the right, the bolster closes the line of cushions up to the arm.

  4. Fig in woven basket

With the chair gone, the plant alone balances the right side of the room.

  5. Vintage medallion rug

Terracotta and soft blue in the rug give the burnt-orange piping a partner at floor level.

The thickness question, asked before cutting

A buyer wrote to the workshop wanting cotton velvet rather than polyester for a daybed cover of about 54 x 75 in (137 x 190 cm).

Before cutting, the workshop noticed that the order said about 7 in (18 cm) thick, while the chat had said about 8 in (20 cm). The workshop asked which was right. It was 7 in.

Then the supplier could not provide the cotton velvet. The buyer switched to a cotton-linen, H12, and the cover went ahead.

Check the thickness in your order against your own tape. Guesses creep in between a conversation and a checkout. The Pattern on measuring a Hemnes daybed walks through stacked mattresses.

Buyer questions: Kallax sizes, linen, a softer guest bed

  1. A common question

I'm using an IKEA Kallax as a bench, including the small 4-cube one. What cushion sizes fit?

    The workshop's answer

For the long Kallax the shop cut cushions at about 15 3/8 x 57 5/8 in (39 x 146.5 cm), and about 15 3/8 x 30 1/8 in (39 x 76.5 cm) for the 4-cube unit. Order through the IKEA Kallax option on the window seat cushion listing.

  2. A common question

Is the fabric on your daybed cover set 100% linen?

    The workshop's answer

No. The daybed cover set listing uses the shop's velvet and a soft woven fabric, first-class fabrics that have gone into thousands of products without negative feedback. If you specifically want 100% linen, ask for the separate 100% linen color chart.

  3. A common question

Could a cot or daybed cushion be soft enough for a guest to sleep on for a few nights?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. For a 70 x 21 in (178 x 53 cm) cot frame used as a guest bed, the buyer asked about paying extra for memory foam, and the shop confirmed it can make the cushion thick and really soft, softer than a normal seat cushion.

Hang art over a daybed no wider than its back pillows and center it over them, and the wall and the cushions read as one set.

Questions buyers ask next

How wide should a gallery wall be over a daybed?

A little narrower than the back pillows and centered over them. Here four frames span slightly less than the two cream velvet back pillows. Art that runs wider than the cushions tends to float away from the seat.

Does contrast piping suit a cream velvet daybed cover?

It gives a pale cover an edge. A burnt-orange welt around the back pillows holds their outline against the white paneled back and picks up the warm tones in the prints and the rug.

Why take a chair out when restyling around a daybed?

With one seat in the room, the eye moves in a single path from wall to cushions. Here a fig in a woven basket took the chair's place and balances the right side without adding another seat to look at.
