A cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover and the rust line that ties it to the room
A parent asked whether burnt terracotta piping would be too bright. The answer comes first as a conversation, then as a reading of the photograph.
SaveThe quick answer
Rust piping on a cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover works when warm wood or clay nearby repeats the rust. In this room the thin welt outlines the mattress, back pillows and bolsters, and a round oak table with stoneware vases carries the color across. To order, send the exact stacked mattress size; the fit allowance is built in.
Three more daybed questions
- A common question
What does shipping cost on a daybed cover?
The workshop's answerIt depends on the listing, so ask for shipping to be confirmed in the quote. The daybed slipcover shipped with no extra fee, and a bespoke 37 x 76.5 in (94 x 194 cm) daybed cushion carried its own shipping charge.
- A common question
My daybed takes a full-size mattress, not the IKEA one. Can you still make the cover?
The workshop's answerYes. Daybed covers are made for any mattress. Enter the mattress length, width and height in the personalization box when you order. IKEA's ABYDA mattress has been fitted as well.
- A common question
Do the armrest bolsters arrive filled, and do they have zippers?
The workshop's answerArmrests and backrests come filled with their own filling. Because they are tufted, they have no zippers.
Now, the reading
The conversation: is terracotta too bright?
A parent wrote to the workshop about an IKEA Hemnes daybed in a graduate student's first apartment. They wanted only the mattress cover, in cream velvet 105, piped in velvet 112, a burnt terracotta. The room already had cumin accents. Would the piping be too much?
The shop did not answer yes or no. It set out the choices.
No piping. The quietest.
Cream on cream. An outline you feel more than see.
Muted camel. A warm line, softer.
Then it pointed to review photos from real rooms, where the color could be judged in daylight. The family went with the daughter's first love, the terracotta.
They sent the exact size of the stacked mattresses and asked how much leeway to add. None, the shop said. The fit allowance is the tailor's job.
Pinned by Hana
Five pins: two bolsters placed two ways, one rust line, and the oak and green that answer it.

- Bolster against the arm
Stood crosswise at the arm, the bolster becomes a soft armrest level with the frame.
- Bolster laid along back
The second bolster lies lengthwise to fill the gap past the last back pillow.
- Front edge piping
One rust line along the front edge marks the seat depth and keeps the cream from looking flat.
- Oak table and vases
Warm oak and clay-colored stoneware carry the rust trim over to the left of the frame.
- Leafy indoor tree
A tall plant at the open arm balances the long, low line of the daybed.

Reading the color: cream, plaster, oak and one warm line
Start with the whites. The frame is white. The wall is pale plaster. The curtain is sheer. Cream velvet sits a half step warmer than all three, and in hazy side light its pile holds a soft sheen along the front edge.
The rust piping is thin next to the depth of the mattress. It outlines the cover without cutting the cream into panels. One line along the front marks the seat depth. The same line runs around the back pillows and the bolsters, so the set reads as one piece.
Rust needs a partner, or it floats. Here the partner is the round oak side table and two clay-colored stoneware vases on the left. On the right, a tall leafy tree stands at the open arm and balances the long, low frame. The gray wool rug cools the floor, so the warmth stays at seat height. Two thin-framed prints keep the wall light.
The bolsters are placed two ways. One stands against the arm, a soft armrest level with the frame. The other lies along the back, filling the space past the last pillow. The small asymmetry makes the daybed look used, not staged.
Before you choose piping, look at the wood in your room. Is it warm, like this oak, or gray? Warm wood will carry a rust line. More sets live under Hemnes daybed covers, the piping choices are laid out side by side, and the sheen is explained under velvet.
Cream is the room. Rust is the edge. Oak is the answer.

On a cream velvet Hemnes daybed cover, a thin rust piping line outlines the mattress without cutting it up. Repeat the rust once, in oak or clay.

Questions buyers ask next
What piping options suit a cream velvet daybed cover?
From quietest to boldest: no piping, cream on cream, muted camel, then a contrast such as rust or burnt terracotta. A contrast line works best when something warm in the room, like oak or clay, repeats it.
How should two bolsters sit on a Hemnes daybed used as a sofa?
Stand one upright against the arm, where it becomes a soft armrest level with the frame. Lay the other lengthwise along the back to fill the space past the last back pillow.
Why does cream velvet look paler in one spot and warmer in another?
Velvet has a pile, and the pile catches light differently depending on where the light falls. Judge a cream swatch in your own room, in daylight, at the hour you use the daybed most.
