The Cutting Table · a question, worked through

What size cover do I need for my IKEA Hemnes daybed?

The frame is not the size. The mattress is.

The quick answer

Measure your own mattress, not the wooden frame, and write its length, width and thickness. A standard EU/UK Hemnes mattress is 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm), but sizes vary by country; the workshop assumed about 39 x 75 in (99 x 190 cm) for a US version. With two mattresses stacked, give their combined height, typically about 8 to 9.5 in (20-24 cm).

"Can I just measure the frame?"

No. The wooden frame's outer dimensions are larger than the mattress inside it. Measure the frame and the cover comes out too big.

Measure the mattress itself. Length, width, thickness. Write the numbers exactly as you find them. The workshop confirms size and thickness with you before cutting. The Hemnes measuring Pattern shows where the tape goes.

"Isn't every Hemnes the same?"

It seems so. It isn't. A standard EU or UK Hemnes daybed takes a 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm) mattress. For a US version the workshop once assumed about 39 x 75 in (99 x 190 cm), a twin. Then a buyer's mattresses measured 31½ x 78¾ in (80 x 200 cm).

So it checks before cutting instead of guessing. Your tape measure knows which one you have. Which one sits in your room?

"We sleep on two stacked mattresses. One cover or two?"

One. Write the length and width once, then the combined height of both. Two Hemnes mattresses stacked are typically about 8 to 9.5 in (20-24 cm) tall, depending on the model. A measured 9.4 in (24 cm) stack is standard; nothing needs adding. For two 4.75 in (12 cm) twins, that is 9.5 to 10 in.

Two separate covers come out too tight. One fitted daybed cover wraps the stack.

"Should I add an inch so it slips on easily?"

No. The cover is already made slightly larger than the mattress so it goes on easily; the workshop adds that fit allowance itself. Padding your numbers makes the cover loose and crinkled. Height is a feeling. A cover size is not.

The frame is furniture.

The mattress is the measurement.

The cover follows the mattress.

What to write in the order note

  • Mattress length, measured on the mattress
  • Mattress width
  • Thickness, or the combined height of both stacked mattresses
  • Fabric and piping codes for the cover set

Measure the Hemnes mattress, not the daybed frame: the frame's outer size is larger, and a standard EU/UK mattress is 31.5 x 78.7 in.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

What cushion size fits an IKEA Hemnes daybed?

    The workshop's answer

A standard Hemnes daybed takes a 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm) cushion or mattress. The frame's outer dimensions aren't the cushion size, so the workshop confirms the exact size and thickness before production.

  2. A common question

I have two EU single mattresses stacked on my Hemnes. What size do I write?

    The workshop's answer

Write 78.7 x 31.5 in (200 x 80 cm) and add the combined height of both mattresses, which varies by model. A measured 9.4 in (24 cm) stack is standard, so no extra depth is needed. Measure everything yourself; the cover is made to exactly what you write.

  3. A common question

What cover size do I need for a Hemnes with two mattresses?

    The workshop's answer

Sizes vary by country, so the workshop checks before cutting. It assumed about 39 x 75 in (99 x 190 cm) for a US version, but one buyer's mattresses measured 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm). Two stacked mattresses run about 8 to 9.5 in (20-24 cm), and a single cover can wrap both.

  4. A common question

Is the mattress included in the Hemnes cover set?

    The workshop's answer

No. The set is one made-to-measure zippered mattress cover, two filled backrest pillows and two filled bolster armrests, with piping included. The mattress and foam aren't part of it.

Questions buyers ask next

Is a US Hemnes daybed mattress a twin?

It has been worked as one: the workshop assumed about 39 x 75 in (99 x 190 cm) for a US Hemnes. But versions differ by country, and one buyer's measured 31.5 x 78.7 in (80 x 200 cm), so measure yours before ordering.

Why does the workshop confirm my size before cutting?

Because Hemnes sizes vary by country and the frame's outer dimensions are larger than the mattress. A quick check on length, width and thickness before cutting keeps the cover from coming out loose or too tight.

Do two separate covers work for two stacked mattresses?

Not well; two separate covers come out too tight. One cover sized to the mattress length and width plus the combined height of both, such as 9.5 to 10 in for two 4.75 in twins, wraps the stack as a single piece.
