A Reading by HanaIKEA Hemnes Daybed Covers & Cushions

A rust corduroy Hemnes daybed cover, read from ten feet and from two

From the doorway it is one warm shape. From arm's length it is ribs, seams and a bolster turned like a sofa arm. Both views were decided before the fabric was cut.

Rust corduroy covers turn a white Hemnes daybed into the main sofa of a small TV den. A cream throw and a warm lamp add to the evening mood.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover in fine-wale rust corduroy with self piping reads as one sofa from across a room, because nothing breaks its outline. The standard set is one fitted mattress cover and two round bolsters. If your daybed holds two stacked mattresses, say whether both need covers, and give each mattress as it is: length, width, thickness.

Buyer questions

  1. A common question

My Hemnes mattress is thicker, about 8 in (20 cm). Can you make the daybed set to fit it, and add a spare mattress cover?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. The daybed set is made in any size, including for an 8 in (20 cm) mattress, and a spare mattress cover can be ordered separately. The corduroy is thick and good quality. Matching curtains are not made.

  2. A common question

For a Kallax bench cushion, when you say width, do you mean the depth?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Length is the longest side, measured left to right. Width is the depth, from the front edge to the back edge. Thickness is how tall the cushion stands. Kallax bench cushions are made here all the time.

  3. A common question

Can you make a daybed or floor cushion in a twin or twin XL mattress size?

    The workshop's answer

    Yes. A twin at 38 × 73 in (97 × 185 cm) has been made, and twin XL at 38 × 80 in (97 × 203 cm) was added as a size option. A 55 × 55 in (140 × 140 cm) loft-bed cushion has been made too.

Now, the reading

Ten feet: one shape. Two feet: the cloth.

Stand where the television is. At ten feet (3 m) this Hemnes daybed cover is a single rust block on a white frame. The wale is invisible from there. The outline is not, and it stays clean because the piping is cut from the same cord as the cover. Self piping holds the edge without drawing a line around it.

The two bolsters do the work of sofa arms. Their ribs run around the roll, so from across the room they read as rolled arms, not pillows. The back cushions stand in the same cord. Four pieces, one fabric, one sofa.

Now come closer. Fine-wale corduroy has narrow ribs, soft under the hand and forgiving of the small marks a TV room makes. Each rib catches lamplight on one side and holds shadow on the other, so the rust shifts as you move. That is what the close view is for.

The props are few and each one has a job. The cream fringed throw breaks the rust at the arm, where a guest sits first. The lamp on its turned wooden base puts warm light on the deepest color; rust is an evening color and wants a lamp, not a ceiling fixture. The cream rug and oak floor carry the beige walls down to the ground, so the daybed is the only strong color in this living room. A basket of cream pillows waits for guests. The TV in the foreground says what the daybed is for. What does yours face?

Where the eye lands

Five spots, from the far view to the near one.

  1. Rust corduroy mattress

Fine-wale cord in rust is warm, tough and forgiving on a TV-room daybed.

  2. Corduroy bolster

Ribs running around the bolster make it look like the rolled arm of a sofa.

  3. Cream fringed throw

A cream throw over the arm softens the rust and is ready for film nights.

  4. Table lamp

Warm lamplight makes rust glow; this is a color for evening rooms.

  5. TV in the foreground

The daybed faces the screen, so it works as the main sofa in a small den.

What still reads at ten feet

  • The outline, kept quiet by self piping.
  • One fabric on all four pieces, so the daybed reads as a sofa.
  • Bolster ribs running around the roll, like a rolled arm.
  • One contrast only: the cream throw at the arm.
A real project

Two mattresses, one question

A buyer messaged the workshop about a Hemnes daybed holding two stacked mattresses, each 31½ × 78¾ in (80 × 200 cm). Could both be covered?

They could. The standard set is one mattress cover and two filled round backrests. For this bed the workshop quoted two mattress covers with the two backrests.

It matters from across the room. Leave the lower mattress bare and it shows as a pale band under the color.

The lesson: With a Hemnes, check whether one or both stacked mattresses need covering.

Piping in the same fabric as the cover lets a daybed read as one sofa from 10 feet away. Contrast piping draws an outline the eye finds first.

Questions buyers ask next

Does rust corduroy hold up on a daybed used every day?

Yes. Fine-wale corduroy is thick and tough, and its ribs hide sitting marks better than a flat weave. Deep rust also forgives the scuffs of a busy TV room.

Why do the bolster ribs run around the roll instead of along it?

Ribs that circle the bolster make it read like the rolled arm of a sofa. From across a room, that is what makes a daybed read as the main seat.

Why does rust corduroy look darker at night than in daylight?

Corduroy has a nap. Each rib catches light on one side and shades on the other, so rust deepens under a warm lamp and reads lighter by a window. Check a swatch in the room at night.
