Navy corduroy on a Hemnes daybed, and a letter about height and depth

Hana writes a short letter about a pale living room held down by one dark daybed, and about the inches that decide whether you sit or lie.

Navy corduroy covers anchor a light Scandinavian living room, with a blush boucle pouf, paper pendant and arc lamp around them. The daybed reads as the room's main sofa.

The quick answer

A Hemnes daybed cover should be sized to the mattresses you actually have, stacked. Two mattresses together can stand about 8 to 9 1/2 in (20 to 24 cm) tall, which sets the seat height; back cushions and bolsters then shorten the depth so the daybed sits like a sofa. Measure length, width and stacked height before ordering.

Seattle ·

To you, in a light room,

A letter about the darkest thing in the room

The daybed is the darkest thing here. That is why the room stands still.

Everything else is pale. White frame, cream rug, lilac and white wall cubes, a paper pendant, sheer curtains. Without the navy the room would float. With it, the eye has somewhere to rest.

Now the inches. A Hemnes daybed is deep because it is a bed. Sit on the bare mattresses and you lean too far back, or lie down. The two navy back cushions bring the backrest forward, so the depth becomes a seat; that is the whole idea behind back cushions for a sofa look. The two bolsters close the ends.

Height is a feeling. Here it is set by the mattresses themselves: two stacked, the cover cut to their combined height, so the seat is neither perched nor sunken.

The fine navy wale of the corduroy makes the surface look tailored, close to a sofa. The self piping keeps the edges quiet.

Round shapes repeat on purpose. Bolster ends. The blush boucle pouf. The paper pendant. The black arc lamp, reaching over the daybed so the light arrives where a book would be. The glass coffee table stays low and clear, so none of these shapes is hidden.

The pouf is blush against navy, looped against ribbed. Two soft textures that do not compete, because their colors keep apart. The framed abstract print and the white sideboard with its lamp and plants stay pale for the same reason.

How deep is your seat, from the front edge to the back cushion?

A dark piece. A pale room. One of them has to hold still.

  2. Corduroy bolster

Self-piped bolsters echo the round forms of the pouf and pendant.

  3. Blush boucle pouf

Soft blush boucle against navy cord is a gentle contrast in both texture and color.

  4. Arc floor lamp

A black arc lamp reaches over the daybed, lighting it for reading.

  5. Lilac wall cubes

Pastel cubes lighten the navy and add a playful note.

A real project

One cover, two mattresses, more than one size

Several buyers have asked for one zipped cover over the two stacked Hemnes mattresses. The workshop checks the size first, because Hemnes mattresses are not the same size everywhere. It assumed 39 x 74 3/4 in (99 x 190 cm) for the US version; one buyer measured 31 1/2 x 78 3/4 in (80 x 200 cm), with the two mattresses about 8 to 9 1/2 in (20 to 24 cm) tall together.

The cover was cut slightly larger so both mattresses slide in easily.

So measure the actual mattresses, stacked, as they sit on the frame. The Hemnes cover measuring guide walks through it, and the seat height calculator shows where the stack puts your knees.

Buyer questions: the Full Set, piping, and an upgrade

  1. A common question

What exactly comes in the Hemnes daybed Full Set?

    The workshop's answer

One fitted daybed mattress cover (cover only, no foam), two backrest lumbar pillow covers with inserts, and two armrest bolster covers with inserts; the back and armrest pillows arrive fully stuffed. Two Full Sets give you two mattress covers, four back pillows and four bolsters. Write your mattress size, for example 37 x 76 3/4 x 12 1/4 in (94 x 195 x 31 cm), and your fabric and trim codes in personalization.

  2. A common question

Can the backrests and bolsters be piped too, not only the mattress cover?

    The workshop's answer

Yes, if those pieces are made plain rather than tufted. Tufted backrests and armrests don't take piping, so the workshop sends an example photo of the non-tufted look before switching styles.

  3. A common question

I ordered only the backrests and now want the full set. How do I upgrade without paying shipping twice?

    The workshop's answer

Either place a new order for the full set and the workshop cancels the first one, or it sends a custom payment link for the difference.

Questions buyers ask next

Do back cushions change how deep a daybed seat feels?

Yes. A daybed is as deep as a bed, so without back cushions you lean far back or lie down. Back cushions bring the backrest forward, which lets the daybed sit more like a sofa.

Why does a navy daybed work in a pale living room?

In a room of white, cream and pastels, one dark piece gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the space from feeling unanchored. A fine-wale corduroy adds texture so the navy never reads flat.

Can a boucle pouf sit beside a corduroy daybed?

Yes. Boucle is looped and corduroy is ribbed, so the two textures read differently. Keep their colors apart, such as blush against navy, and each one holds its own without competing.
