A Reading by RosaRocking Chair & Glider Cushions
A sage glider cushion set, built for the long nights
Kids and dogs are the real quality control. This sage glider has a sleeping Maltese on the rug and, I would bet, a baby who rocks best at three in the morning.
SaveThe quick answer
A rocking chair cushion set for long sitting needs a full-height back cushion tied at the top rail, a box seat thicker than the back, and a matching ottoman cushion. For a curved wooden seat, send a traced paper template photographed from above beside a tape measure. Ties go wherever you specify, so name them in the order.

To whoever does the 3 a.m. rocking,
Your photograph came with my morning coffee, and I read it twice. A honey wood glider in a sunny nursery corner, dressed all in one soft sage. A tall back cushion, a thicker box seat, a matching footstool cushion. And on the cream rug, a little white Maltese sound asleep, which tells me more about this room than any catalog could.
Long sitting is its own kind of comfort. A chair you perch on for ten minutes can get away with a thin pad. A glider you rock in for an hour at a time, feeding a baby or reading the same board book nine times over, cannot. Every choice in this set was made for the second hour, not the first minute.
Five things I would show my sister
Every pin on this glider is about staying comfortable for the long haul.

- Back cushion ties
Bow ties at the top rail keep the tall back cushion from sliding down.
- Full-height back
A full-height back cushion supports the shoulders while rocking.
- Box seat
The seat is thicker than the back for comfort over long sits.
- Footstool cushion
The footstool cushion matches, so glider and ottoman read as a set.
- Sleeping Maltese
A tight pet-friendly weave is sensible when a dog shares the room.

Why the back is tall and the seat is thick
Look at the back cushion first. It runs full height, top rail to seat, so your shoulders have somewhere to rest while you rock. Bow ties at the top rail keep it from sliding down, and on a chair that moves all night, that matters more than any color.
The seat is a box, thicker than the back, because that is where your weight lives. The footstool cushion matches, so glider and ottoman read as one set instead of two cousins who never met.
The rest of the corner is soft, natural texture: a pothos on the windowsill, a rattan side table holding a mug and a knit throw, a basket of rolled blankets within arm's reach. Nothing to trip over in the dark.
The sage is a tight, pet-friendly weave, the sensible pick when a dog shares the room, since tightly woven cloth resists claws better than a loose one. See performance and pet-friendly fabrics, more rockers among the rocking chair cushions, and where ties go on chairs and swings.
The rocker with a carved seat
A buyer who had ordered from the workshop before wrote about an old wooden rocking chair with a sculpted, curved seat, and offered to make a paper template. The workshop sent back the steps, and they are worth copying:
- Trace the seat onto paper and cut it out
- Write the widest width and the depth right on the paper
- Photograph it from above with a tape measure lying alongside
The craftsmen marked the straight sections of the side edges on that photo and asked for two more measurements. That was all it took to cut a 3 in linen cushion, piped in the same linen, for a seat no tape measure alone could describe. The full method is in the rocking chair template pattern.
- Sizes
- Traced paper template; 3 in (7.5 cm) thick
- Fabric
- Linen with matching linen piping
The lesson: For a curved seat, a photographed paper template with two reference measurements beats guessing with a tape.
Buyer questions
- A common question
I already own the floor sofa. Can I buy just the ottoman to go with it?
The workshop's answerYes. The ottoman can be ordered on its own from the options, and it ships with its own metal support bars. Buyers often add an ottoman to a sofa they bought months earlier.
- A common question
Could you copy the seat and back cushions from my dining chairs?
The workshop's answerYes. Send photos with the dimensions, and the seat and back cushions are made to match. They are quoted per chair; ask for shipping to be spelled out.
- A common question
Can you sew ties on so the cushions stay attached to the chair?
The workshop's answerYes. Ties go wherever you specify, for example at the bottom back corners of a bench cushion, and chair pads can have ribbons on two corners. Mark the positions on your drawing and check the photo sent before shipping: in one order the ties were forgotten, and that photo is where you catch it.
A glider back cushion should run full height, from the top rail to the seat, with ties at the top rail so it stays put through a night of rocking.

Questions buyers ask next
How thick should a glider seat cushion be?
For everyday seating the recommendation is 4 in (10 cm) with firm 32-density foam. On a glider, keep the seat a box thicker than the back cushion, because the seat carries your weight through long sits.
Can the glider, back and ottoman all be covered in one fabric?
Yes, and it is the simplest way to make a hand-me-down glider look like a matched set. Measure all three cushions together and order them in one fabric at the same time.
Where do ties go on a rocking chair back cushion?
At the top rail, so the tall back cushion cannot slide down while you rock. A seat pad can take ties on two corners. Draw every tie on your sketch so they are sewn exactly where you want them.
Is a nursery glider cushion practical with a dog in the house?
Choose a tight, pet-friendly weave; tightly woven fabrics are less attractive to claws and hold up better against them. Zippered covers come off for a gentle 86°F (30°C) wash when the dog naps where the baby sits.

P.S. Measure all three cushions on the same afternoon and order them in one fabric, at one time. A set bought together stays a set.
