A Reading by MaggieDining Chair Cushions & Pads
A black T-shaped chair cushion built for long reading hours
Maggie reads a cream armchair with a new black seat and a sleeping tabby, and asks what a cushion needs when you plan to sit for three chapters, not three minutes.
SaveThe quick answer
A chair cushion for long sitting needs a shape that fills the seat exactly, a firm boxed front edge and a fabric that forgives fur and wear. On a T-shaped armchair seat, template the notch in front of each arm; on a shaped dining chair, give six measurements, three widths and three depths.
Across the counter: returns, ottomans and a spindle-back chair
- A common question
My custom dining chair cushions feel too tall for the room. Can I send them back?
The workshop's answerCustom cushions are made to the size you order, so on a change-of-mind return the buyer pays the return shipping. Once the shop receives the cushions, you get a full refund. Send the return tracking number as text in a message so it can be followed.
- A common question
Could I buy just the ottoman, in the same color as my sofa?
The workshop's answerYes. Pick the 'only ottoman' option on the sofa listing, or use the ottoman-only listing, and choose the same color as your sofa.
- A common question
How do I measure a spindle-back dining chair seat so the pad fits exactly?
The workshop's answerThe shop marks six lines on a photo of your chair. Three widths: H1 across the back at the spindles, H2 at the widest part of the seat, H3 across the front. Three depths: V1, V2 and V3 at the left, center and right. With numbers like 14.5, 17 and 14 in wide and 14.5, 15.5 and 13.5 in deep, the seat shape can be reproduced accurately.
Now, the reading
Reading the chair: dark where it wears, light where it doesn't
Right, then. A cream linen armchair, a bottle-green library, a brass arc lamp and a gray tabby who has already claimed the new seat. Only the seat cushion changed, and that was the smart part.
The cushion is a T-shape, cut to step out in front of each arm and wrap around them. That notch is where a guessed size shows first: too narrow and there's a gap your thigh will find by the second chapter; too wide and the cushion buckles against the arm. For long sitting, the seat has to fill the frame exactly. The T-shaped cushion entry explains the shape if the term is new.
The fabric is a black pebble weave from the pet-friendly shelf. The part of a chair that takes the most wear, and the most fur, gets the darkest and toughest cloth, while the cream frame stays light. Gray fur shows far less on it than it would on pale linen. Self piping outlines the T without a second color and keeps the box edge firm at the front, where the backs of your knees rest through a long read.
Everything else is there to warm the black. The brass lamp arcs over the shoulder, exactly where a reader wants the light. A brass tankard and a stack of leather-bound books sit on an oak side table at arm height. A red and navy kilim underfoot keeps the black seat from looking heavy against dark green shelves.
If your armchair cushion has gone flat, a dark replacement can refresh the whole chair. Start in the chair cushions atlas, and tell me, dear: how long is your longest sit?
The long-sit checklist
- The seat fills the frame to the arms, with no gap for a thigh to sink into.
- The front edge is boxed and firm, so it holds up under the knees.
- The foam is medium-firm high-density, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), which keeps its shape.
- The seat fabric is dark and tightly woven where the cat sleeps.
- The light comes over the shoulder, and a side table waits at arm height.
- On a dining chair, a chair cushion with ties on two back corners stays put through a long dinner.

A 40 that became a 50
A buyer in the US built a wooden bench and ordered a custom floor couch for its 35 x 40 in (89 x 102 cm) top, with the size written right there in the order note. It arrived at 35 x 50 in (89 x 127 cm). The color, at least, looked even better in person.
The shop's first offer was a discounted second piece. Then it agreed the error was its own. It made a new seat cushion and backrest free of charge and let the buyer keep the first set. The original armrests fit, so they stayed, and the buyer chose to pay the shipping on the replacements.
I misread a number myself once, on a window seat years ago, and the lesson hasn't changed: read every custom dimension back to the customer before the scissors come out. One wrong digit remakes the whole set.

A T-shaped chair cushion only fits if the notch in front of each arm is templated; that step-out is where a guessed size shows first.

Questions buyers ask next
What makes a replacement armchair seat comfortable for hours of reading?
Full coverage and a firm front. The cushion should fill the seat right to the arms with no gaps, keep a boxed front edge that doesn't roll, and use foam that holds its shape rather than a soft fill that flattens.
Is black a sensible seat color if you have a gray cat?
Usually, yes. A dark, textured weave hides gray fur better than pale linen, which is exactly why this seat is black pebble weave. Keep a lint roller nearby anyway; hiding fur is not the same as repelling it.
How do you template the notch on a T-shaped seat cushion?
Lay paper over the seat, press it into each corner where the seat steps out in front of the arm, and trace the outline. Mark the front edge, then photograph the template flat with a tape measure beside it.
