Dusty Rose Rocking Chair Cushions on a Porch Built for Company

One white rocker, one pink tie-on set, a glass of iced tea sweating on the teak table. Here is how that color and those ties hold up when the whole family comes to supper.

The quick answer

A rocking chair cushion set should be two tie-on pieces: a boxed seat that sits inside the arms and a separate back pad tied at the posts, so neither slides while the chair rocks. Dusty rose outdoor fabric reads warm on white paint and gray floorboards. For more guests, order matching sets from one measured drawing.

Swatch strip: five porch colors that make pink look grown-up

  • Dusty rose#C9A19CThe cushion set. Warm in evening light, never sugary against white paint.
  • Porch white#F3F0E8Rocker and railings. Lets the pink read as a color instead of a shadow.
  • Floorboard gray#9FA4A6Painted boards below cool the rose back down.
  • Fern green#5A7A44The hanging basket answers the pink from above.
  • Teak brown#8C5E3BThe side table grounds the right half of the picture.

Why a pink set belongs on a white rocker

Pull up a chair, because this one is already spoken for. A white rocker sits on gray-painted boards wearing a rocking chair cushion set in dusty rose: a boxed seat tucked inside the arms and a separate back pad tied at the posts. White railings run off to the right, and a Boston fern hangs overhead like a green umbrella.

Look at the proportion first. The seat is thick enough to soften the front rail under your knees, but not so tall that the arms end up at your elbows. The back pad covers the spindles, so you lean back without counting slats. Two pieces, not one, because a rocker bends where seat meets back, and a single long pad would buckle right there.

The piping is self piping, the same rose as the cushion. A porch already has plenty of lines in its rails and floorboards; self piping lets the pink sit there as one soft shape.

Then the color. Dusty rose on white paint is gentle in the late afternoon; the low sun warms it without tipping it into candy, and the gray floor cools it back down. The cloth is our water-repellent membrane fabric, which shrugs off a sloshed glass and a shower blown in under the porch roof.

Every prop earns its keep. The teak side table holds that iced tea and an open book, so this is a chair for long sitting. The fern balances the pink from above, and because the props all sit to the right, the chair on the left has room to breathe.

Now, the hosting part. When company comes, the rocker is the chair everybody fights over, so plan for more than one. Put every seat and back on one drawing, order the sets together, and tie every piece; guests rock harder than owners do. See where ties go on chairs and swings and the rocking chair template Pattern. How many rockers does your porch need when the whole family comes for supper?

Pinned by Rosa: five stops on one rocker

Five pins, from the tied back pad to the fern overhead, show why this rocker is the first chair a guest heads for.

A real project

The mustard set that landed on the wrong porch

A buyer in the US ordered one anthracite gray floor cushion, 24 x 48 in (60 x 120 cm), and opened the box to find a mustard set instead: backrest, armrests and all, with two shipping labels stuck on the carton. The workshop remade the gray cushion and sent it out. Then it asked the buyer for a kindness: forward the mustard pieces to the family who had been waiting on them, with the postage paid back. One favor, and two households get the right cushions.

That story belongs on a hosting page, neighbor. Order several sets for company and a mix-up is easier to miss in the pile of boxes. If a parcel looks wrong, photograph the labels and the contents together before you unpack another thing.

Buyer questions: a tapered seat, a squashed front and a chair that sat too low

  1. A common question

Can you make a tapered seat and a matching back cushion for an outdoor chair on a covered porch?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Send a drawing with the back edge, front edge, depth and both side edges written on it, plus the back cushion size and the thickness you want. For the back height, take the seat-to-top distance and subtract the seat thickness: 19 in (48 cm) minus a 3 in (8 cm) seat leaves a 16 in (41 cm) back.

  2. A common question

My five-year-old jumps on the chair, and now the front of the cushion is squashed so the seat tips forward. Can it be fixed?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. Take the cover off, pull the filling back into shape by hand and spread it evenly toward the front, then put the cover back on.

  3. A common question

My 1970s office chair sits too low for my desk. Could you make a cushion to raise it?

    The workshop's answer

Yes. A 17 x 18 in (43 x 46 cm) seat, for example, can be ordered through either the bench listing or the chair cushion listing. Pick the closest size option, then write your exact size and thickness in the personalization box.

A rocking chair cushion needs ties at the back posts on both the seat and the back pad; a chair that moves will walk an untied cushion right off.

Questions buyers ask next

Should a porch rocker get one long cushion or a separate seat and back?

A separate seat and back. A rocker's seat and back meet at an angle, and a one-piece pad buckles at that fold. A boxed seat plus a tied back pad each lie flat and can be turned or replaced on their own.

Where do the ties go on a two-piece rocker cushion set?

At the back posts for both pieces. The seat ties around the posts at its back corners and the back pad ties higher on the same posts, which keeps everything in place through the rocking without ties crossing the arms.

Can a water-repellent rocker cushion stay out on a covered porch?

Through the season, yes. The fabric handles a spilled drink and a shower blown in under the roof. For the long off-season, bring the set indoors, as with any outdoor textile.

How do I order matching rocker cushions for several chairs at once?

Measure each chair's seat and back separately, write every size on one drawing, and order all the sets together so the color matches across the porch. Ask for ties on every piece.
